As an important component of complementary and alternative medicines, traditional Chinese medicines (TCM) are gaining more and more attentions around the world because of the powerful therapeutic effects and less side effects. However, there are still some doubts about TCM because of the questionable TCM theories and unclear biological active compounds. In recent years, gut microbiota has emerged as an important frontier to understand the development and progress of diseases. Together with this trend, an increasing number of studies have indicated that drug molecules can interact with gut microbiota after oral administration. In this context, more and more studies pertaining to TCM have paid attention to gut microbiota and have yield rich information for understanding TCM. After oral administration, TCM can interact with gut microbiota: (1) TCM can modulate the composition of gut microbiota;(2) TCM can modulate the metabolism of gut microbiota;(3) gut microbiota can transform TCM compounds. During the interactions, two types of metabolites can be produced: gut microbiota metabolites (of food and host origin) and gut microbiota transformed TCM compounds. In this review, we summarized the interactions between TCM and gut microbiota, and the pharmacological effects and features of metabolites produced during interactions between TCM and gut microbiota. Then, focusing on gut microbiota and metabolites, we summarized the aspects in which gut microbiota has facilitated our understanding of TCM. At the end of this review, the outlooks for further research of TCM and gut microbiota were also discussed.

Aeromonas veronii is one of the main pathogens causing sepsis and ulcer syndrome in freshwater fish. Analysis of the results of epidemiological investigations in recent years has revealed that the virulence of A. veronii and its tolerance to drugs have been increasing year by year. Currently, most of the research on A. veronii focuses on its isolation, identification, and drug susceptibility, whereas research on its virulence factors and pathogenesis mechanisms is relatively rare. In this study, we identified and obtained the highly expressed TH0426 cadaverine reverse transporter (CadB) of A. veronii. We used efficient suicide plasmid-mediated homologous recombination to delete the cadB gene in TH0426 and constructed a cadB deletion strain. The LD50 of Delta cadB was 93.2 times higher than that of TH0426 in zebrafish, the toxicity of Delta cadB was 9.5 times less than that of TH0426 in EPC cells, and the biofilm formation ability of Delta cadB was 5.6-fold greater than that of TH0426. In addition, motility detection results indicated that Delta cadB had lost its swimming ability. The results of flagellar staining and TEM demonstrated that Delta cadB shed the flagella. In summary, the virulence and adhesion of A. veronii TH0426 were significantly decreased by the deletion of cadB, which might provide a theoretical basis for research into A. veronii virulence factors.

With the development of economy, the research of urban intelligent transportation system is becoming more and more important. The research and development of plate number recognition system is an important factor to realize the intelligence and modernization of transportation system. It uses each car to have a unique plate number and recognizes the vehicle number through the vehicle image captured by the camera. On the basis of image recognition, this article takes plate number image as the research object and discusses the key technologies of plate number recognition system. First, this article uses image preprocessing technology to process images to improve image quality. Second, the plate number location algorithm based on the connected region search is analyzed. According to the characteristics of the plate number itself, the regional features of the plate number are extracted to locate the plate number accurately. Then, an improved vertical projection-based plate number character segmentation method is proposed to segment plate number characters. Finally, combined with character characteristics, the template matching method is used to recognize plate number characters. The simulation results show that, on the basis of image recognition, this article studies the key technologies of plate number recognition system, which effectively improves the performance of the system and makes the recognition of plate number more effective and accurate.

The protein phosphorylation status of exosomes can regulate the activity and function of proteins related to cancer development, and it is highly possible to diagnose cancers through analyzing the protein phosphorylation status. However, monitoring the protein phosphorylation status with a simple and label-free method is still clinically challenging. Here, inspired by beehives, we developed an Au-coated TiO2 macroporous inverse opal (MIO) structure with an engineered "slow light effect" and thus with outstanding surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) performance. The MIO structure can capture and analyze the exosomes from plasma of cancer patients without any labeling processes. It was found that the SERS intensity of exosomes at 1087 cm(-1) arising from the P-O bond within the phosphoproteins can be used as a criterion for tumor liquid biopsies. The intensity of the 1087 cm(-1) SERS peak from exosomes extracted from the plasma of cancer patients (prostate, lung, liver, and colon) is at least two times of that from healthy people. This indicates the simplicity and versatility of this method in cancer diagnostics. Our method has obvious advantages (noninvasive and time-saving) over currently clinically used tumor liquid biopsy techniques (such as western blot), which has great potentials to make vitro cancer diagnostics/monitoring as simple as diagnostics/monitoring of common diseases.
