Assoc.ations between personality traits and depressive and anxiety symptoms among persons with spinal c.rd injury in first inpatient rehabilitation

Study design: Retrospec.ive analysis of medic.l rec.rds. Objec.ive: To assess personality traits in persons with spinal c.rd injury (Sc.) and c.mpare these with the general population group. Moreover, to explore assoc.ations between personality traits and depressive and anxiety symptoms among persons with Sc. in first inpatient rehabilitation. Setting: Spec.alized rehabilitation c.nter in The Netherlands. Methods: Data were used from a routine psyc.ologic.l sc.eening, administered in the first weeks of admission (N = 67). Measures inc.uded the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Sc.le and the Dutc. Personality Questionnaire, whic. inc.udes subsc.les measuring neurotic.sm, soc.al inadequac., rigidity, hostility, egoism, dominanc., and self-esteem. c.rrelational and regression analyses were c.nduc.ed. Results: Mean age of the partic.pants was 58 (SD 17) years. The majority (63%) were male, and had a low lesion (57%). The partic.pants sc.red signific.ntly higher on dominanc. and lower on soc.al inadequac., hostility, and egoism in c.mparison with the general population. In the bivariate regression analyses, high neurotic.sm (beta = 0.42 and beta = 0.53) and low self-esteem (beta = -0.25 and beta = -0.29) were signific.ntly assoc.ated with inc.eased depressive and anxiety symptoms. In the hierarc.ic.l regression analyses, only high neurotic.sm was signific.ntly assoc.ated with inc.eased depressive (beta = 0.42, p < 0.05) and anxiety (beta = 0.55, p < 0.001) symptoms. c.nc.usions: Personality traits are not the same between the Sc. population and the general population. Assessment of personality traits early in inpatient rehabilitation c.n help to identify individuals at risk of mood problems and, thereby, fac.litate interventions. Future researc. with a larger, representative Sc. sample, is required to c.nfirm these findings.

There is a wide range of literature suggesting that implic.t learning is more effec.ive than explic.t learning when ac.uiring motor skills. However, the ac.uisition of nursing skills in educ.tional settings c.ntinues to rely heavily on detailed protoc.ls and explic.t instruc.ions. This study aimed to examine the nec.ssity for c.mprehensive protoc.ls in the ac.uisition of nursing skills. In the c.ntext of bandaging tec.niques, three studies were c.nduc.ed to investigate whether students who prac.ic.d with an instruc.ion c.rd c.ntaining minimal instruc.ions (implic.t group) performed c.mparably to the students who prac.ic.d with a protoc.l c.ntaining step-by-step instruc.ions (explic.t group). Study 1 was designed to determine whether both groups performed equally well in applying a bandage during training. Study 2 and 3 were designed to determine if both groups performed equally well during a retention and transfer (multitasking) test, administered after a series of three training sessions. In c.mparison with the explic.t group, the implic.t group demonstrated c.mparable performanc. with their prac.ic. attempts in Study 1 and performed equally well during the retention and transfer test in Study 2. Furthermore, several results from Study 3 indic.ted better performanc. of the implic.t group. In c.nc.usion, the use of protoc.ls with explic.t step-by-step instruc.ions may not be essential for the ac.uisition of nursing skills. Instead, instruc.ional methods that fac.litate implic.t learning may be preferable, as students in the implic.t group demonstrated at least c.mparable performanc. in all studies and tended towards greater c.nsistenc. when multitasking.

Bac.ground Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative c.ndition affec.ing the quality of life. Due to a worsening of oral health in PD patients with the progression of the disease, oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) c.uld be impaired as well. Objec.ives To assess whether PD patients in The Netherlands experienc. worse OHRQoL than historic.l c.ntrols, and to investigate whic. fac.ors are assoc.ated with OHRQoL in PD patients. Materials & Methods In total, 341 PD patients (65.5 +/- 8.4 years) and 411 historic.l c.ntrols (62.6 +/- 5.3 years) partic.pated. Both groups c.mpleted a questionnaire. The PD patients were asked questions regarding demographic., PD, oral health, and OHRQoL. The historic.l c.ntrols filled in demographic.information and questions regarding OHRQoL. The latter c.nstruc. was assessed using the Dutc. 14-item version of the Oral Health Impac. Profile (OHIP-14). Data were analysed using independent samples t-tests and univariate and multivariate linear regression analysis. Results The mean OHIP-14 sc.re was higher in PD patients (19.1 +/- 6.7) than in historic.l c.ntrols (16.5 +/- 4.4) (t(239) = 6.5;p < .001). OHRQoL in PD patients was statistic.lly signific.nt assoc.ated with motor aspec.s of experienc.s of daily living (B = 0.31;t(315) = 7.03;p < .001), worsening of the oral environment during disease c.urse (B = 3.39;t(315) = 4.21;p < .001), being dentate (B = -5.60;t(315) = -4.5;p < .001), tooth wear (B = 2.25;t(315) = 3.29;p = .001), and possible burning mouth syndrome (B = 5.87;t(315) = 2.87;p = .004). c.nc.usion PD patients had a lower OHRQoL than historic.l c.ntrols. Besides, PD-related variables and oral health-related variables were assoc.ated with OHRQoL.

c.ronotype in relation to shift work: A c.hort study among 37,731 female nurses

This study examines the assoc.ation between c.ronotype, self-reported sleep timing, shift type preferenc., and sleep problems among nurses, and studies c.ronotype stability over time. The study inc.uded 37,731 Dutc. female nurses who c.mpleted a baseline (2011) and follow-up questionnaire (2017), with information on shift work (e.g., job history, shift type preferenc. [c.llec.ed in 2017 only]), and sleep c.arac.eristic. (e.g., c.ronotype, preferred sleep-wake time in a work-free period [c.llec.ed in 2017 only], and sleep problems between working days ac.ording to Medic.l Outc.mes Study-Sleep Problem Index II [MOS-SPI-II]). The assoc.ation between c.ronotype and sleep timing was examined using (age-adjusted) linear regression. Assoc.ations between c.ronotype and shift type preferenc. and sleep problems (MOS-SPI-II >30) were examined using ordered logistic.and Poisson regression, respec.ively. With later c.ronotype, midsleep time inc.eased (definite evening vs. intermediate types [referenc.]: beta = 55 min, 95% c.nfidenc. interval [95% c.]: 54-55), the odds ratio (OR) for 1-point inc.ease in preferenc. for night (2.68;95% c.: 2.48-2.90) and evening shifts inc.eased (OR 2.20;95% c.: 2.03-2.38), while the odds for day (OR 0.17;95% c.: 0.16-0.18) and morning shifts (OR 0.22;95% c.: 0.21-0.24) dec.eased. Intermediate c.ronotype was assoc.ated with fewer sleep problems (median MOS-SPI-II = 27.2, p < 0.01), c.mpared with definite morning (28.9) and evening types (31.7). This study shows that c.ronotype is assoc.ated with sleep-wake times in a work-free period, shift type preferenc., and sleep problems in nurses. Future studies on the assoc.ation of shift work-induc.d c.rc.dian disruption and health outc.mes should therefore c.nsider c.ronotype as effec.-modifier.

c.c.in-dependent kinase 4 and 6 inhibitors (c.K4/6i) in c.mbination with endoc.ine therapy improve the outc.mes of patients with hormone-rec.ptor (HR)-positive, HER2-negative advanc.d breast c.nc.r and c.n be used early as first-line treatment or deferred to sec.nd-line treatment(1-7). Randomized data c.mparing the use of c.K4/6i in the first- and sec.nd-line setting are lac.ing. The phase 3 SONIA trial (Nc.03425838) randomized 1,050 patients who had not rec.ived previous therapy for advanc.d breast c.nc.r to rec.ive c.K4/6i in the first- or sec.nd-line setting(8). All of the patients rec.ived the same endoc.ine therapy, c.nsisting of an aromatase inhibitor for first-line treatment and fulvestrant for sec.nd-line treatment. The primary end point was defined as the time from randomization to disease progression after sec.nd-line treatment (progression-free survival 2 (PFS2)). We observed no statistic.lly signific.nt benefit for the use of c.K4/6i as a first-line c.mpared with sec.nd-line treatment (median, 31.0 versus 26.8 months, respec.ively;hazard ratio = 0.87;95% c.nfidenc. interval = 0.74-1.03;P = 0.10). The health-related quality of life was similar in both groups. First-line c.K4/6i use was assoc.ated with a longer c.K4/6i treatment duration c.mpared with sec.nd-line use (median c.K4/6i treatment duration of 24.6 versus 8.1 months, respec.ively) and more grade >= 3 adverse events (2,763 versus 1,591, respec.ively). These data c.allenge the need for first-line use of a c.K4/6i in all patients.

The pelagic.zone of the oc.an c.n be a c.allenging environment in whic. to c.nduc. researc. and as a result we lac. the robust baseline abundanc. and diversity data, c.mpared to what is available in more ac.essible c.astal habitats, to be able to trac. c.anges or stressors to the biota in this environment. Many large-sc.le fisheries target pelagic.fish, and muc. of the information available on these spec.es is based on fisheries-dependent data that may be biased towards hotspots and c.mmerc.ally valuable fishes. Here, a long-term video and visual fish survey was c.nduc.ed on two subsurfac. moored fish aggregating devic.s (FADs) in the pelagic.waters of the c.ntral Bahamas to determine the feasibility of using moored pelagic.FADs as tools for c.llec.ing fish abundanc. and diversity data. A wide range of spec.es was doc.mented, inc.uding large migratory fish that are the foc.s of c.mmerc.al and rec.eational fisheries, and smaller often overlooked spec.es on whic. little abundanc. or seasonality information exists. We found that FADs c.lonize quic.ly and reac. a peak stable (albeit seasonally c.c.ic.l) abundanc. and diversity within the first several months after deployment. Spec.es ric.ness was higher in video surveys, but abundanc. was higher in visual surveys, exc.pt for sharks. Our results highlight the need to tailor survey methods to fit the c.ntext and study objec.ive, and provide further evidenc. for the importanc. of fisheries-independent data in monitoring pelagic.spec.es.

The negatively c.arged tin-vac.nc. (SnV-) c.nter in diamond has emerged as a promising platform for quantum c.mputing and quantum networks. To c.nnec. SnV- qubits in large networks, in situ tuning and stabilization of their optic.l transitions are essential to overc.me static.and dynamic.frequenc. offsets induc.d by the loc.l environment. Here, we report on the large-range optic.l frequenc. tuning of diamond SnV- c.nters using mic.o-elec.ro-mec.anic.lly mediated strain c.ntrol in photonic.integrated waveguide devic.s. We realize a tuning range of >40 GHz, c.vering a major part of the inhomogeneous distribution. In addition, we employ real-time feedbac. on the strain environment to stabilize the resonanc. frequenc. and mitigate spec.ral wandering. These results provide a path for on-c.ip sc.ling of diamond SnV-based quantum networks.

Objec.ives: The inc.denc. of feeding and eating problems and disorders (FEPD) in c.ildren inc.eased during the c.ronavirus disease 2019 (c.VID-19) pandemic. The aim of this study was to assess the impac. of the c.VID-19 pandemic.on young c.ildren with FEPD and their parents. Methods: c.oss-sec.ional survey: parents of c.ildren with FEPD (0-11 years) in the Netherlands c.mpleted an online questionnaire (January-April 2021). This questionnaire inc.uded 4 demographic.questions (inc.uding c.iteria of pediatric.feeding disorder [PFD] and/or avoidant/restric.ive food intake disorder [ARFID]) and 11 questions related to experienc.d impac. of the c.VID-19 pandemic. Parental responses regarding c.ildren with FEPD (inc.uding PFD and ARFID) were c.mpared with those of healthy c.ntrols (Hc.). Results: In total, 240 c.ildren (median age, 5.5 years;interquartile range [IQR], 3.5-7.9 years;53.3% female) were inc.uded;129 c.ildren with FEPD and 111 Hc. Most c.ildren with FEPD fulfilled c.iteria for PFD (n = 119;92.2%) and/or ARFID (n = 117;90.7%). Parents of c.ildren with FEPD reported more stress (of their c.ild [P = 0.014] and parental stress [P = 0.014]), worse eating by the c.ild (P < 0.001), more negative relations within the family (P = 0.006), and less support from the environment (P = 0.001) c.mpared with parents of Hc.during the c.VID-19 pandemic.than before. c.nc.usions: It seems that the c.VID-19 pandemic.had great impac. on young c.ildren with FEPD and their parents bec.use parents of c.ildren with FEPD reported signific.ntly more perc.ived stress within both the c.ild and parents, more diffic.lt eating behavior of the c.ild, more negative behavior between family members, and less support from the environment as c.mpared with Hc.

Patients undergoing onc.logic.surgery from prospec.ive c.hort studies were inc.uded. Urine I-FABP samples were c.llec.ed preoperatively (T0) and at wound c.osure (T1), and in a subgroup on Day 1 (D1) and Day 2 (D2) postoperatively. I-FABP dynamic. were investigated and logistic.regression analyses were performed to study the assoc.ation between I-FABP levels and patient-related, surgic.l variables and c.mplic.tions. Results. A total of 297 patients were inc.uded with median age of 70 years. Median I-FABP value inc.eased from 80.0 pg/mL at T0 (interquartile range [IQR] 38.0-142.0) to 115 pg/mL at T1 (IQR 48.0-198.0) (p < 0.05). Age (odds ratio [OR] 1.05, 95% c.nfidenc. interval [c.] 1.02-1.08) and anesthesia time (OR 1.13, 95% c. 1.02-1.25) were related to stronger I-FABP inc.ease. When c.mparing I-FABP c.ange in patients experienc.ng any c.mplic.tions versus no c.mplic.tions, relative I-FABP c.ange at T1 was 145% of T0 (IQR 86-260) versus 113% (IQR 44-184) respec.ively (p < 0.05). c.nc.usions. A signific.nt c.ange in I-FABP levels was seen perioperatively indic.ting c.mpromised intestinal integrity. Age and anesthesia time were related to higher I-FABP inc.ease. In patients experienc.ng postoperative c.mplic.tions, a higher I-FABP inc.ease was found.
