Corn Stover-derived nanocellulose and lignin-modified particles: Pickering emulsion stabilizers and potential quercetin sustained-release carriers

Pickering emulsions (PEs) have wide applications in delivering nutraceuticals. However, the impact of extracting nanocellulose from corn stover on stabilizing PEs and delivering nutraceuticals remains unclear. In this study, four types of nanocellulose, cellulose nanocrystals (CNC), cellulose nanofibers (CNF), lignin-containing cellulose nanocrystals (LCNC), and lignin-containing cellulose nanofibers (LCNF) were successfully prepared from corn stover, an agricultural waste. Among them, LCNC and LCNF exhibited stable reticulated microstructures, lower crystallinity, and excellent thermal stability. Besides, lignin enhanced the nanoparticles' hydrophobicity, promoting the formation of more ideally amphiphilic particles, resulting in denser emulsions at the oil-water interface. Furthermore, emulsions stabilized by LCNC and LCNF demonstrated remarkable resistance to quercetin degradation under UV light exposure (with residual level exceeding 90 %) and improved quercetin's bioaccessibility during the in vitro digestion tests, achieving the highest bioaccessibility of 48.3 %. This study provided an innovative perspective on utilizing stover-derived materials for stabilizing PEs and delivering lipophilic nutrients.

Development and Validation of a Screening Tool for Generalized Anxiety and Major Depressive Disorder in Patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease

PurposeAnxiety and depression are often underdiagnosed in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). This study aimed to develop and validate a screening tool for anxiety and depression in COPD *** COPD patients were consecutively recruited from November 2021 to October 2023 and underwent a psychiatric interview to diagnose generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) and/or major depressive disorder (MDD) based on the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition. Patients were split into training and validation sets according to their recruitment time. We assessed known risk factors and used core items from the Patient Health Questionnaire Anxiety and Depression Scale (PHQ-ADS) to develop a prediction nomogram. Multivariable logistic regression with least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) were used to construct the *** the enrolled COPD patients (n = 329), 58 (25.6%) in the training cohort and 33 (32.4%) in the validation cohort were diagnosed with GAD and/or MDD. Three variables were identified in the prediction nomogram: COPD Assessment Test score and two core items from PHQ-ADS. The under the curve (AUC) value for the nomogram was 0.826 (95% CI: 0.755-0.897) and 0.855 (95% CI: 0.767-0.942) in the training and validation cohorts, respectively. The calibration curve was close to the diagonal. The discriminatory power of the screening nomogram was comparable to that of PHQ-ADS (AUC: 0.826 vs. 0.831, P = 0.832).ConclusionThe new screening tool for GAD and MDD in COPD patients is concise and valid, with discriminatory power comparable to existing anxiety/depression screening questionnaires.

Centrifugation free and air-assisted liquid-liquid microextraction based on deep eutectic solvent for determination of rare ginsenosides in Kang'ai injection

A simple, effective and convenient enrichment method coupled with high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) was established for the analysis of rare ginsenosides in Kang'ai (KA) injection. Air assisted liquid-liquid microextraction was used in this work for the first time to determine the rare ginsenosides in KA injection. Deep eutectic solvent (DES) and tetrahydrofuran (THF) were specially selected as a novel green extraction solvent and an emulsified solvent, respectively. To remove the DES droplets, Fe3O4 nanoparticles were used. Therefore, centrifugation was free in this work, which can increase the efficiency of analysis procedure. Moreover, Fe3O4 nanoparticles were reusable. To achieve better extraction efficiency and enrichment factor, the experimental conditions have been optimized, including type and volume of DES and emulsified solvent, amount of Fe3O4 nanoparticles and inorganic salt, and pH value. Under the optimum extraction condition, the validation parameters show the limits of detection (LODs) are in the range from 10.2 ng/mL to 137.8 ng/mL and the limits of quantity (LOQs) are in the range from 55.5 ng/mL to 428.5 ng/mL. The recoveries of analytes range from 91.3% to 106.7% with the relative standard deviations (RSDs) ranging from 1.2% to 4.5%. The recommended approach was utilized to acquire the information of constituents in KA injection. Moreover, the results in this research could provide a study basis for further study of KA injection.

Pilot-Scale Application of Red Mud-Based Slag Pellets in Steelmaking: Process Optimization, Mechanism, and life Cycle Assessment

The resource utilization of red mud (RM) is crucial for the aluminum industry and for addressing environmental concerns. In this study, RM-based slag pellets were prepared through a cold pressing process and used for converter steelmaking. In the pellet preparation experiment, the effects of binder starch and carboxymethyl cellulose sodium (CMC) dosage, moisture content, drying temperature, particle size, and forming pressure on the strength of RM-based pellets were studied. The formation mechanism of RM particles was determined by analyzing the changes in the crystal structure, functional groups, elemental valence state information, and density functional theory calculations. Finally, the environmental benefits of the pellet production process were analyzed. Under the optimal reaction conditions, the compressive strength of RM pellets prepared based on starch and CMC can reach 1162.06 and 1345.6 N/P, which can meet the production needs of the converter. Mechanism analysis shows that organic adhesives adsorb and solidify particles through chemical or hydrogen bonding, resulting in a denser particle structure. RM particles have an excellent slag and phosphorus removal performance. The results of the life cycle assessment clarify the potential contributions of each stage of particle production. The raw materials and transportation distance have significant impacts on the particle production system. The experimental results provide theoretical guidance and a sustainable evaluation for the production of RM slag aggregates.

In order to address the problems of Coyote Optimization Algorithm in image thresholding,such as easily falling into local optimum,and slow convergence speed,a Fuzzy Hybrid Coyote Optimization Algorithm(here-inafter referred to as FHCOA)based on chaotic initialization and reverse learning strategy is proposed,and its effect on image thresholding is *** chaotic initialization,the random number initialization mode in the standard coyote optimization algorithm(COA)is replaced by chaotic *** sequence is nonlinear and long-term unpredictable,these characteristics can effectively improve the diversity of the population in the optimization ***,in this paper we first perform chaotic initialization,using chaotic sequence to replace random number initialization in standard *** combining the lens imaging reverse learning strategy and the optimal worst reverse learning strategy,a hybrid reverse learning strategy is then *** the process of algorithm traversal,the best coyote and the worst coyote in the pack are selected for reverse learning operation respectively,which prevents the algorithm falling into local optimum to a certain extent and also solves the problem of premature *** on the above improvements,the coyote optimization algorithm has better global convergence and computational *** simulation results show that the algorithmhas better thresholding effect than the five commonly used optimization algorithms in image thresholding when multiple images are selected and different threshold numbers are set.

A covert timing channel is a technical means that enables information hiding and covert communication. Due to the fact that covert timing channels can elude detection by security defence measures, they offer a substantial security risk to the information of Internet users when they are exploited for illicit reasons. The attacker sends at a low rate to ensure the stealthiness of the covert timing channel communication process, making the number of inter-arrival time encoded as covert information much less than the normal number of inter-arrival time, resulting in the low detection accuracy of existing detection methods. In this paper, we propose a covert timing channel detection method based on one-dimensional convolution and self-attention mechanism. The method begins with local feature extraction of the input inter-arrival time sequence by a one-dimensional convolutional layer, then characterizes the correlation between each inter-arrival time by a self-attention mechanism in the encoder, and finally through the full connection layer to produce the type output. In this study, experimental results on a public dataset and 16 self-built datasets demonstrate that the detection method delivers optimal detection results and efficient detection of covert information in low-volume communications. © 2023 ACM.

A highly sensitive one-step nanobody-based immunoassay to specifically detect antibodies against fowl adenovirus serotype 4

Hepatitis-hydropericardium syndrome, caused by fowl adenovirus serotype 4 (FAdV-4), has resulted in significant economic damage to the poultry industry. To monitor viral exposure and vaccine efficacy, some traditional antibody-based immunoassays have been developed for detecting anti-FAdV-4 antibodies. However, these assays have some drawbacks including multi-step operations and higher production cost. Recently, nanobodies are regarded as a promising tool for developing immunoassays. In the study, 23 nanobodies against FAdV-4 were screened and expressed with horseradish peroxidase (HRP) in the HEK293T cells. Then, the FAdV-4-Nb28-HRP fusion protein was selected for developing competitive enzyme-linked immunoassays (cEliSA) to detect antiFAdV-4 antibodies in the chicken sera. The optimal concentrations and dilutions for the coating antigen, fusion protein and testing sera were determined to be 400 ng/well, 1:80 and 1:20, respectively. After the coated plates were vacuumized and stored, the operation of cEliSA to detect clinical chicken sera was only one-step and the full time was 75 min. The cEliSA also exhibited high sensitivity, specificity, reproducibility and good agreement with the commercial EliSA kit. When the sequential sera from the challenged chickens were tested, the cEliSA showed superior sensitivity compared with the commercial EliSA kit. Moreover, epitope mapping revealed that the nanobody specifically recognized the sites GLN235 ASN236 SER238 of the fiber-1 protein, highly conserved among different FAdV-4 isolates and different from the FAdV-1 and-8. The results indicated that cEliSA can specifically detect anti-FAdV-4 antibodies. Collectively, the developed one-step nanobody-based cEliSA is an ideal method for epidemiological investigation and vaccine immune evaluation of FAdV-4.

Monitoring and numerical analysis of slope deformation in a coal mine in the southwest mountainous regions of China

As underground coal mining activities are increasing in the southwestern mountainous areas of China, the geological safety issues related to ground subsidence and slope deformation have emerged as significant concerns. These issues have started to impact the routine mining operations. Monitoring deformation and analyzing the mechanical behavior of mining areas can help reveal the deformation patterns at surface level and on typical slopes in mountainous coalfields, ultimately reducing the risk of landslides. Taking the Guangfeng coal mine as a case study, this paper employs Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) and numerical simulation to analyze the influence of surface deformation caused by underground mining activities on slope deformation. The InSAR results indicate the presence of two distinct subsidence areas, labeled as I and II. The maximum annual subsidence rate in area I reaches 72 mm/a, while area II shows an annual deformation rate of 59 mm/a. The subsidence around the mined-out area has triggered sliding deformation in the slopes, which aligns with the numerical simulation results obtained from the fast Lagrangian analysis of continua in three dimensions (FLAC3D). As mining advances further into the working face, greater tensile stress develops at the rear edge of the slope, causing the subsidence at the center of surface which gradually shifts towards the top of the slope. The process of slope deformation related to underground coal mining in mountainous regions can be divided into four stages: the original slope stage, the early stage of underground mining, the evolution stage of composite slope deformation, and the stage of increased surface subsidence in the slope. By combining InSAR technology with FLAC3D numerical simulations, surface movements in mountainous mining areas can be accurately and reliably monitored and analyzed.
