Automatically identifying semantic concepts from medical images provides multimodal insights for clinical research. To study the effectiveness of concept detection on large scale medical images, we reconstructed over 230,000 medical image-concepts pairs collected from the ImageCLEFcaption 2018 evaluation task. A transfer learning-based multi-label classification model was used to predict multiple high-frequency concepts for medical images. Semantically relevant concepts of visually similar medical images were identified by the image retrieval-based topic model. The results showed that the transfer learning method achieved F1 score of 0.1298, which was comparable with the state of art methods in the ImageCLEFcaption tasks. The image retrieval-based method contributed to the recall performance but reduced the overall F1 score, since the retrieval results of the search engine introduced irrelevant concepts. Although our proposed method achieved second-best performance in the concept detection subtask of ImageCLEFcaption 2018, there will be plenty of further work to improve the concept detection with better understanding the medical images.

BackgroundThe increasing global cancer incidence corresponds to serious health impact in countries worldwide. Knowledge-powered health system in different languages would enhance clinicians' healthcare practice, patients' health management and public health literacy. High-quality corpus containing cancer information is the necessary foundation of cancer education. Massive non-structural information resources exist in clinical narratives, electronic health records (EHR) etc. They can only be used for training AI models after being transformed into structured corpus. However, the scarcity of multilingual cancer corpus limits the intelligent processing, such as machine translation in medical scenarios. Thus, we created the cancer specific cross-lingual corpus and open it to the public for academic *** to build an English-Chinese cancer parallel corpus, we developed a workflow of seven steps including data retrieval, data parsing, data processing, corpus implementation, assessment verification, corpus release, and application. Rapid and highly efficient treatment of acid mine drainage (AMD) is still challenging due to the low pH and high metal concentrations in it. This research focuses on a novel treatment method of AMD using direct contact membrane distillation (DCMD) and photocatalysis to recover water and utilize iron. In the DCMD process without pretreatment, the flux decreased by 93.38%. If pretreated by adding sodium oxalate, scale formation potential was effectively mitigated due to the removal of calcium and complexing of iron. For the treatment of the pretreated AMD (PAMD), 60% of water was recovered in the DCMD process with the flux decrease of 22%. The concentrate obtained from the DCMD process demonstrated high photocatalytic activity in the methylene blue (MB) degradation in an aqueous solution. In addition, the Fe (III)-oxalate complexes in the concentrate were reduced to insoluble Fe (II)-oxalate with visible light irradiation, which could be separated by sedimentation and used as a Fenton catalyst. Hence, this novel method exhibits great advantages on effectively inhibiting DCMD membrane fouling during AMD treatment, producing high-quality distillate with low conductivity, and realizing near zero-discharge of AMD.
