A m.llim.ter wave defected ground structure (DGS) resonator is introduced for noninvasive blood glucose concentrations detection. The unloaded sensor is designed to operate at 16 GHz. The sensing process is carried out by m.asuring the variations in the resonant frequency, and S-param.ters phase and m.gnitude. The planned resonator is justified by tim. dom.in and frequency dom.in m.asurem.nts. Several glucose solution concentrations are considered through experim.nts from.0 to 1000 m./dL, providing high sensitivity of 1.4 dB/ (100m.dL(-1)) and quality factor of 61.08. Three volunteers assisted to check the potential sensor sensitivity by m.asuring their blood glucose levels. The actual perm.ttivity of the hum.n body affects the m.asurem.nts and shifts down the frequency from.16 GHz to 5 GHz, while in sim.lation the frequency of the loaded sensor is 12 GHz. The presented sensor reveals high sensitivity levels in both sim.lations and m.asurem.nts.

Several clinical trials were carried out to find the route for an efficient therapy against SARS-CoV-2 infection. m.no- and dual therapy of various antivirals were investigated and found to have a clinical benefit in infected patients. Som. of these antivirals are m.lnupiravir (m.L) and Favipiravir (FAV), both drugs were evaluated for com.ined antiviral activity in som. recent clinical trials. In this study, an efficient, sim.le, and rapid LC-m./m. m.thod for sim.ltaneous determ.nation of N-hydroxycytidine (NHC), m.L active m.tabolite, and FAV in hum.n plasm. of healthy volunteers was developed. Plasm. protein precipitation was perform.d using acetonitrile. Com.ounds' separation was achieved using Agilent Zorbax Eclipse plus C18, 4.6 x 150 m., 3.5 m. m.and an isocratic elution of a m.bile phase com.osed of m.thanol - 0.2 % acetic acid (10:90, v/v) at a flow rate of 0.5 m./m.n using pyrazinam.de as an internal standard (IS). Drugs were quantified using API 6500 + Qtrap m.ss spectrom.ter em.loying a selective ion m.de com.ining a positive and negative ESI interface. The bioanalytical m.thod was validated in accordance with the US-FDA bioanalytical guidance. The calibration range for both NHC and FAV was 10.0-10000.0 ng/m. com.uted via weighted linear regression approach (1/x2). The proposed m.thod could be applied to support the upcom.ng clinical studies for therapeutic drug m.nitoring of patients undergoing dual com.ination therapy as the latter com.ination proved m.re efficacious and powerful tool for the com.lete treatm.nt of SARS-CoV-2 cases. Finally, the suggested bioanalytical m.thod was efficiently utilized in hum.n pharm.cokinetic study of NHC and FAV, after sim.ltaneous co-adm.nistration, in healthy volunteers.

In this study, various ion-selective electrodes (ISEs) were developed to m.asure the concentration of Perindopril (PER) in hum.n plasm.. The proposed solid-contact sensors were assessed with and without the use of graphene nanoparticles as an ion-to-electron transducer. Com.ared to liquid contact sensors, the solid contact sensors dem.nstrated better durability, handling, and sensitivity, with the added benefit of easier adaptation for industrial use. The sensors were successfully em.loyed to determ.ne PER levels in pharm.ceutical form.lations and spiked hum.n plasm. for testing, providing a diagnostic tool for m.nitoring the drug's therapeutic effects. This potentiom.tric approach is the first to selectively determ.ne PER in the presence of its m.tabolite, PERT, and co-form.lated drugs, IND and Am.. The developed ISEs could be used for fast in-line m.nitoring of the studied drug in plasm.. As the analytical society focuses on "Sustainable Analytical Procedures", the presented potentiom.tric ISEs represent a prom.sing alternative analytical tool that fulfills the requirem.nts of green analytical chem.stry (GAC) for challenging analytical tasks. The developed m.thod is considered a step forward towards achieving sustainability. To ensure the qualitative and quantitative hum.n and environm.ntal safety of the developed m.thods, different m.trics were utilized to assess their greenness and whiteness. The results were statistically com.ared to those obtained from.a reference m.thod, and no significant difference was observed.

Assessm.nt of the unwanted tooth m.vem.nt associated with an extended m.xillary fixed retainer (3D analysis)

BackgroundPosttreatm.nt changes after orthodontic treatm.nt are challenging. One of the m.in reasons for such a phenom.non is the lack of patient com.liance with rem.vable retainers especially in the m.xillary arch, due to palatal coverage, deterioration of speech, decreased m.sticatory efficiency, and loss of retainers. Fixed retainers have been introduced to overcom. patient com.liance and provide longer stable results. However, teeth still show m.vem.nts when a six-unit fixed retainer is in place. Thus, in this study, an eight-unit fixed retainer was evaluated in an attem.t to elim.nate unwanted *** aim.of this researchwas to assess short-term.positional changes associated with an eight-unit extended m.xillary fixed *** and m.thodsA single-arm.clinical trial was conducted to address the aim.of the study. This research was approved by the institutional review board of the Faculty of Dentistry, Alexandria University (IORG:0008839, No-0479-8/2022). The registration date of this study was 5/06/2023. Twenty-eight patients (19.8 +/- 4.5 years) who had finished the active orthodontic phase and started retention had an eight-unit extended m.xillary fixed retainer that was bonded to the palatal surface of the m.xillary incisors, canines, and the first prem.lars or the second prem.lars. Pre-retention and one-year post-retention intra-oral scans were m.de to produce STL files that were superim.osed to determ.ne the am.unt of tooth change. Additionally, analysis of digital casts and lateral cephalom.tric radiographs was *** significant changes in all planes and the rotation of teeth after one year of retention were found. The upper right lateral incisor exhibited the m.st evident change in the vertical plane, while the upper right central incisor exhibited the greatest change overall. m.nim.l changes in the cast m.asurem.nts were observed. m.ltitask m.thods for predicting m.lecular properties from.heterogeneous data

Data generation rem.ins a bottleneck in training surrogate m.dels to predict m.lecular properties. We dem.nstrate that m.ltitask Gaussian process regression overcom.s this lim.tation by leveraging both expensive and cheap data sources. In particular, we consider training sets constructed from.coupled-cluster (CC) and density functional theory (DFT) data. We report that m.ltitask surrogates can predict at CC-level accuracy with a reduction to data generation cost by over an order of m.gnitude. Of note, our approach allows the training set to include DFT data generated by a heterogeneous m.x of exchange-correlation functionals without im.osing any artificial hierarchy on functional accuracy. m.re generally, the m.ltitask fram.work can accom.odate a wider range of training set structures—including full disparity between the different levels of fidelity—than existing kernel approaches based on ∆-learning, though we show that the accuracy of the two approaches can be sim.lar. Consequently, m.ltitask regression can be a tool for reducing data generation costs even further by opportunistically exploiting existing data sources. © 2024, CC BY.

The River Nile is the m.in source of fresh water in Egypt, where its water is used for irrigation, drinking, fisheries, industrial uses, and recreation. For sustainable utilization of the River Nile and its branches in the Nile Delta region, it is necessary to m.nitor regular investigation for the biodiversity of protozoan fauna in the Dam.etta branch and other freshwater canals in Dakahlyia Governorate. Water sam.les were collected m.nthly from.different water sources, for 1 year, and exam.ned for protozoans, using phase-contrast m.croscopy and recorded video film., The genus Vannella Bovee 1965 is recorded for the first tim. in four freshwater localities: Dem.etta branch of the River Nile, m.nsouria Canal, Bouhia Canal, and Bahr El-Saghir Canal. A detailed m.rphological description with a brief report of their locom.tion has been given for four m.rphologically different Vannella species. The locom.tive form.of Vannella sp.1 has a long pointed posterior tail and 2 lateral posterior processes. Such a tail was absent in other Vannella species. Vannella sp.2 is unique am.ng other recorded species, where its locom.tive form.possesses a long posterior rounded tail region and a frontal hyaloplasm.provided with a wavy surface that form. several lobes and finger-like processes during locom.tion. In addition, the hyaloplasm.produces several transverse waves that vary in thickness and density. The floating form.of Vannella sp.2 is of a radial type and has com.aratively long hyaline pointed and spiral pseudopodia. The process of transform.tion of locom.tive form.to floating form.in Vannella sp.2 has been followed up using several recorded video film.. The locom.tive form.of Vannella sp.3 is bear-shaped, while that of Vannella sp.4 has variable shapes from.sem.circular to rectangular and som.tim.s fan-shaped. During m.vem.nt in vivo, locom.tive cells of all Vannella species, except Vannella sp.1, m.ve in nearly a straight line, but there were variations in their rate of locom.

Selected rare -earth ions -doped in host Na2O-CaF2 - P2O5 glass were prepared by m.lting - annealing technique. m.lti - characterization of the studied doped (CeO2-Pr2O3 - Dy2O3) glasses and their glass - ceram.c derivatives were carried out. Optical, photolum.nescence, FTIR spectral analysis were m.asured before and after gam.a irradiation. Optical and PL spectra reveal absorption and em.ssion bands which are characteristic for the specific rare earth doped ions which exhibit distinct shielding behavior in CeO2 - doped glass and lim.ted changes by gam.a irradiation with the rest of the rare earth - doped glasses. FTIR spectra show characteristic vibrational bands due to m.in (PO4) groups with the possibility of (PO3F) units and the rare -earth dopants show m.nor effects on the IR spectra. Gam.a irradiation causes a distinct decrease of the intensities of all the IR vibrational bands due to som. suggested changes in the bond angles or bond lengths of the network vibrational units. The diffraction patterns due to the phases of the defined crystalline units in the glass - ceram.c crystalline phases form.d upon controlled heat treatm.nt indicate the form.tion two sodium.phosphate and sodium.fluorophosphates phases beside calcium.phosphate phase. The crystallization process is assum.d to depend on the phase separation process accom.lished by the presence of P2O5 and CaO facilitating the latter crystallization process. The calculated optical param.ters are found to depend on the structural arrangem.nts in the glass network and their variations through the introduction of the rare - earth dopant and the form.tion of non-bridging oxygens.

The effects of delayed annealing on the lum.nescent activity of heavy m.tal cadm.um.zinc phosphate glasses activated by: Er³⁺ and Tb³⁺ ions

The lum.nescent spectra of the RE2O3-doped P2O5-CdO-ZnO glasses (RE = Er, and Tb) were investigated to separate the effects of two studied rare-earth elem.nts and the annealing regim. on the em.ssion perform.nce of the prepared glasses. The glasses undergo a series of collective m.asurem.nts including UV-visible absorption, lum.nescence, therm.l expansion, XRD, TEm. and FTIR. The optical UV-visible spectra of the two doped glasses reveal a UV band due to undoped glass beside and extra extended 11 peaks with the Er3+ ions with high distinct features while the Tb3+ ions sam.les exhibit peaks within the visible region. These peaks are correlated with transitions from.the ground state in each case to specific energy transitions. The overall optical data indicate that the two rare earth ions are present in a stable trivalent state. Under UV excitation, both Er3+ and Tb3+ em.t a characteristic green light corresponding to S-4(3/2) -> I-4(15/2) and D-5(4) -> F-7(5) transitions, respectively. The perform.nce of the green light was identified to be enhanced by increasing the concentration of rare earth and the effect of annealing tem.erature. m.reover, the intensity of the infrared em.ssion of Er3+ at 1532 nm.corresponds to the (I-4(13/2) -> I-4(15/2)) transition which is assum.d to be developed with the effect of heating. The resultant IR spectra show distinct vibrational peaks due to phosphate groups that undergo only m.nor m.difications when doped with rare earth elem.nts or over-annealed.

Enhancing the perform.nce of an earth air heat exchanger with novel pipe configurations

In this study, num.rical m.deling is established to predict different working param.ters' effects on the aerotherm.l perform.nce of EAHE in sum.er conditions. Five different novel configurations such as straight earth air heat exchanger (SEAHE), wave earth air heat exchanger1 (WEAHE 1), wave earth air heat exchanger 2 (SEAHE 2), spiral earth air heat exchanger (PEAHE), and m.dified spiral earth air heat exchanger (m.EAHE) are investigated. Outlet tem.erature, pressure drop, exergy efficiency, and coefficient of perform.nce (COP) are studied for the Re rage num.er from.3000 to 9000. The num.rical m.del of EAHE is validated with the experim.ntal results and the percentage of error is acceptable. The results reveal that the outlet air tem.erature decreases by 16 % at 1 m.s air velocity using the m.del of m.EAHE. Exergy efficiency and COP are enhanced with the growth of Reynolds num.er where the highest values of enhancem.nts in exergy efficiency and COP are 21 % and 19 %, respectively. The perform.nce of EAHE is enhanced by increasing the buried pipe length and vice versa with the Reynolds num.er increase. Using different geom.tries develops secondary flow which enhances the heat transfer from.air to soil. The EAHE is a highly efficient technique for decreasing the energy consum.tion of the buildings' cooling process.

The adoption of the principles of green chem.stry in analytical procedures lowers the negative influence on both people and the environm.nt, which presently has becom. the key goal. Additionally, the need for advanced analytical techniques for the sim.ltaneous determ.nation of antiviral com.inations is highly recom.ended, one of those novel com.inations that recently proved effective em.rging antiviral drugs in the treatm.nt of SARSCOV-2 is m.lnupiravir (m.L) and favipiravir (FAV). Therefore, the establishm.nt of sim.le and precise stability-indicating HPLC-PDA m.thod for their sim.ltaneous determ.nation is crucial for the probable co- form.lation. The stability of m.L was studied along with FAV after forced degradation of both under different stress conditions Separation of m.L, FAV, and their corresponding degradation products was achieved by sim.le isocratic HPLC-PDA m.thod using a m.bile phase com.rised of 25.0 m. phosphate buffer (pH 3.0 +/- 0.05)- m.thanol (70:30, v/v) at flow rate 1.0 m./m.n. A Zorbax C 18 (250 x 4.6 m., 5 m. m.Agilent Technologies, USA) colum. was used for the separation of the com.onents and the colum. oven was m.intained at 30 degrees C, the selected wavelength for detection of both analytes and their degradation products was 230.0 nm. The m.thod was linear over the range of 1.0 - 200.0 m. g/m. for both m.L and FAV. m.L was found to be susceptible to all forced degradation conditions, nam.ly, acid, alkali, oxidative, therm.l, and photodegradation while FAV was susceptible only to acid, alkali, and oxidative degradation. The probable degradation m.chanism. were assum.d through the evaluation of the m.1 fragm.ntation pattern of the degradation products, also studying the kinetic behavior of the degradation reactions.
