Perceptions about respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and attitudes toward the RSV vaccine among the general public in China: A cross-sectional survey

Our study aims to assess the public's perceptions of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and attitudes toward the RSV vaccine and to identify associated factors in China. A nationwide cross-sectional survey conducted using an online platform between August 16 and September 14, 2023. Questions related to socio-demographics, awareness, knowledge, perceptions of susceptibility and severity of RSV, and attitudes toward the RSV vaccine were included in the questionnaire. We used the chi-square test and logistic regression model to explore the associated factors. Overall, 2133 individuals were included in this study. Nearly a quarter of participants (24.3%) indicated that they had never heard of RSV. The proportion of individuals aged over 50 years reporting never having heard of RSV (36.5%) and having a low knowledge level of RSV (55.3%) was significantly higher that of other younger age groups. More than half of individuals (55.7%) exhibited low level of perceptions of susceptibility concerning RSV infection. A total of 68.4% of the participants expressed willingness to receive the RSV vaccine. Younger age was positively associated with a higher willingness to be vaccinated. The most frequent reason for declining the vaccine was "Concern about vaccine's safety or side effects." About 60% of individuals considered a price of RSV vaccine below 200 CNY (28 USD) as acceptable. The awareness and perceived susceptibility to RSV infection were limited to the Chinese public. It is necessary to take measures to address the low awareness and knowledge of RSV and acceptability of the RSV vaccine among older adults.

Laser ultrasonic Lamb wave detection technology provides technical support for noncontact and online large plate/shell structure detection. Improving detection accuracy and efficiency has always been the goal of inspection personnel. In this paper, we have built a noncontact laser ultrasonic Lamb wave detection platform to achieve rapid localization of abnormal damage in aluminum alloy plates. First, analyze laser ultrasonic Lamb waves’ modal types and wavelength components. Design and optimize a circular laser array based on near-field beamforming theory, with a single transmitter at the center and multiple receivers around the circumference. After extracting single-frequency components using wavelet transform, the azimuth of the scattering wave is estimated using the near-field 2D multiple signal classification(2D-MUSIC). The advantage is that there is no need to collect the reference signal or add window filtering to intercept the wave packet. The results indicate that damage within the 900 cm2 area can be localized within 0.7 s, and the orientation error is within 6°. This method is an efficient method to achieve damage orientation in a large area. However, the problem of the low resolution and artifact interference in multi-damage estimation presented by this method is urgent to be solved in the future. © 2024, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

This paper presents the work of ImageSem group in the ImageCLEFmedical Caption 2022 task. In the caption prediction subtask, we employed the bootstrapping language-image pre-training (BLIP) framework for generating medical image descriptions. We submitted 2 runs using exclusively the official training data and achieved the BLEU score of 0.2211, which ranked 9th among the participating teams. Despite the lower BLEU score, we achieved a relatively balanced performance across all other metrics, such as the ROUGE of 0.1847, the METEOR of 0.0675, the CIDEr of 0.2513, the SPICE of 0.0393 and the BERTScore of 0.6059, showing the potential of better verbal fluency via fine-tuning the medical caption generation task grounded by vision-language pre-training (VLP). © 2022 Copyright for this paper by its authors.

With the rapid development of renewable energy, a large number of power electronic devices are connected to the power grid, leading to a gradual decrease in the reliability of the grid. Virtual synchronous generator can simulate the inertia support provided by synchronous generators to the power grid and has great potential in the new power system. This paper presents a small‐signal modeling of VSG using the state‐space method and verifies the correctness and effectiveness of the method through simulation experiments. Participation factor analysis was utilized to establish the relationship between the VSG state variables and system oscillation modes.

InDel variations and gene expression analysis related to Fusarium wilt resistance in Gossypium barbadense

Fusarium wilt resistance of Gossypium barbadense is very important to maintain its yield and quality, and to disease resistance breeding. Although many individual genes, which are quantitative trait loci associated with wilt resistance have been identified, knowledge of genes controlling wilt resistance in G. barbadense is still limited. In order to screen the InDel fragment related to Fusarium wilt resistance in G. barbadense, a genome-wide association study was conducted using 110 recombinant inbred lines of Xinhai 14 (susceptible cotton) and 06-146 (resistant cotton). In this study, 207,040 high-quality InDel loci were identified, of which 595 and 632 InDels were significantly associated (p < 1 x 10(-3)) with wilt resistance in G. barbadense in the additive and dominant effect module analyses, respectively. Combined transcriptome expression analysis within the FOV7 stably inherited qFOV7-D03-1 interval identified three >= 2 bp InDels for two differentially expressed genes. qPCR analysis was used to further validate that the expression of GB_D03G0204 and GB_D03G0238 was significantly different in the parental, resistant, and high susceptibility varieties. The GB_D03G0238 gene InDel was significant in both additive and dominant effect models, and the GB_D03G0204 gene InDel was significantly associated with wilt resistance in G. barbadense in the dominant effect model. The InDel fragments related to wilt resistance in G. barbadense discovered in this study can help gain insights into the genetic basis of wilt resistance and improve cotton breeding with excellent wilt resistance and high fiber quality traits.

Nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI) generally occurs in youth and probably progresses to suicide. An examination of cortical thickness differences (Delta CT) between NSSI individuals and controls is crucial to investigate potential neurobiological correlates. Notably, Delta CT are influenced by specific genetic factors, and a large proportion of cortical thinning is associated with the expression of genes that overlap in astrocytes and pyramidal cells. However, in NSSI youth, the mechanisms underlying the relations between the genetic and cell type-specific transcriptional signatures to Delta CT are unclear. Here, we studied the genetic association of Delta CT in NSSI youth by performing a partial least-squares regression (PLSR) analysis of gene expression data and 3D-T1 brain images of 45 NSSI youth and 75 controls. We extracted the top-10 Gene Ontology terms for the enrichment results of upregulated PLS component 1 genes related to Delta CT to conduct the cell-type classification and enrichment analysis. Enrichment of cell type-specific genes shows that cellular component morphogenesis of astrocytes and excitatory neurons accounts for the observed NSSI-specific Delta CT. We validated the main results in independent datasets to verify the robustness and specificity. We concluded that the brain Delta CT is associated with cellular component morphogenesis of astrocytes and excitatory neurons in NSSI youth.

Accurate detection of copy number variations (CNVs) from sequencing data is crucial in many complex traits and diseases research. Although many CNV detection algorithms have been developed, challenges in precisely identifying CNVs persist. The core statistical model of these algorithms cannot self-adjust, which limits their adaptability to heterogeneous samples and reduces detection accuracy. address this challenge, we reframed the CNV detection problem as a quality control issue and incorporated adaptive mechanisms. We developed adapCNV, a novel adaptive CNV detection framework that integrates machine learning with optimization control. This framework enables dynamic adaptation of primary parameters based on sample features. We defined a quantifiable metric, RD fluctuation values, to assess signal characteristics when the algorithm accurately detects CNVs. We then employed machine learning techniques extract features from panel sequencing data, select initial parameter values for samples, and determine optimal RD fluctuation values. By adopting adaptive model predictive control (AMPC), adapCNV performs optimizations within rolling window. It dynamically adjusts the primary parameters based on error feedback from RD fluctuation values. This adaptive control strategy enables dynamic adjustment automatically match the characteristics of panel sequencing samples, significantly enhancing overall detection quality. The performance of this framework was validated with simulated data. Comparative analysis demonstrated that the proposed method outperforms the baseline approach, particularly in detecting small CNVs. The adapCNV framework is particularly suitable for panel sequencing, which may have broad applications in clinical practice. This novel approach from quality control perspective introduces a new paradigm for CNV detection. © 2024 IEEE.

In genome-wide association studies (GWAS) and candidate gene studies (CGS), appropriate multiple testing correction methods can effectively address linkage disequilibrium (LD) blocks and are crucial for controlling the family-wise error rate (FWER) while ensuring the reliability of results. In our recent research, we observed that when the number of independent effective Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms (SNPs) is relatively small, existing multiple testing correction methods struggle to effectively control the FWER at 0.05 and lack robustness. This study proposes an enhanced method that builds upon the Moskvina and Schmidt approach by incorporating additional SNP correlation information, allowing for precise control of the FWER at 0.05 with limited independent effective SNPs. We also leverage Monte Carlo integration on a GPU to accelerate the computation of significance thresholds. Our method was evaluated through both simulation studies and real genotype datasets, demonstrating superior performance and robustness compared to existing methods. © 2024 IEEE.

Batch effects, caused by non-biological variations such as differences in laboratory conditions, reagent lots, or personnel, are a substantial source of noise in gene expression data. Accurately correcting these effects is crucial for valid biological inferences. However, the majority of existing batch effect correction algorithms are prone to overcorrection, where biologically meaningful signals are mistakenly identified as noise, especially in repeated measurement studies where time is confounded with batch. The failure to accurately distinguish between batch-related and biologically relevant variation leads to a loss of critical biological information. This paper presents RMComBat, an enhancement of the widely-used ComBat framework, which addresses this limitation by replacing the general linear model with a linear mixed-effects model. RMComBat incorporates subject-specific random intercepts to correct for sample correlation and enhance the preservation of biological signals. We tested RMComBat and several popular algorithms on simulated and real repeated measurement gene expression datasets, evaluating their performance through visual inspections and quantitative metrics. Results indicate that although most algorithms can reduce batch effects, they often do so at the cost of removing true biological signals. RMComBat demonstrates superior performance in preventing overcorrection, providing a more balanced and biologically informative correction in repeated measurement studies, so making it a valuable tool for improving the accuracy of gene expression analyses. © 2024 IEEE.

In the face of emerging infectious diseases such as COVID-19, timely government intervention is crucial, as swift policy actions can effectively prevent greater losses. However, policymakers often need to balance multiple conflicting objectives. The lack of high-quality data and suitable analytical tools poses significant challenges for policy evaluation, especially in multi-objective decision-making, where accurately assessing the impact of interventions becomes even more difficult. To address this issue, this paper proposes a real-time data-driven policy monitoring method for dynamically tracking the effects of policy interventions. We introduce a new non-parametric one-sided test control chart, leveraging the interpretability and ease of implementation of control charts to monitor risk levels across various policies. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of this method in policy monitoring. © 2024 IEEE.
