Temporal assembly patterns of microbial communities in three parallel bioreactors treating low-concentration coking wastewater with differing carbon source concentrations

Carbon source is an important factor of biological treatment systems, the effects of which on their temporal community assembly patterns are not sufficiently understood *** this study, the temporal dynamics and driving mechanisms of the communities in three parallel bioreactors for low-concentration coking wastewater(CWW) treatment with differing carbon source concentrations(S0 with no glucose addition, S1 with 200 mg/L glucose addition and S2 with 400 mg/L glucose addition) were comprehensively studied. Highthroughput sequencing and bioinformatics analyses including network analysis and Infer Community Assembly Mechanisms by Phylogenetic bin-based null model(iCAMP) were used. The communities of three systems showed turnover rates of 0.0029~0.0034 every 15days. Network analysis results showed that the S0 network showed higher positive correlation proportion(71.43%) and clustering coefficient(0.33), suggesting that carbon source shortage in S0 promoted interactions and cooperation of microbes. The neutral community model analysis showed that the immigration rate increased from 0.5247 in S0 to 0.6478in S2. The iCAMP analysis results showed that drift(45.89%) and homogeneous selection(31.68%) dominated in driving the assembly of all the investigated microbial *** contribution of homogeneous selection increased with the increase of carbon source concentrations, from 27.92% in S0 to 36.08% in S2. The OTUs participating in aerobic respiration and tricarboxylic acid(TCA) cycle were abundant among the bins mainly affected by deterministic processes, while those related to the metabolism of refractory organic pollutants in CWW such as alkanes, benzenes and phenols were abundant in the bins dominated by stochastic processes.

Alexandrov's Theorem for Anisotropic Capillary Hypersurfaces in the Half-Space

In this paper, we show that any embedded capillary hypersurface in the half-space with anisotropic constant mean curvature is a truncated Wulff shape. This extends Wente's result (Pac J Math 88:387-397, 1980. ) to the anisotropic case and He-Li-Ma-Ge's result (Indiana Univ Math J 58(2):853-868, 2009. ) to the capillary boundary case. The main ingredients in the proof are a new Heintze-Karcher inequality and a new Minkowski formula, which have their own interest.

Energetic metal salts based on 3-cyano-1,5-(5-nitro-1,2,4-triazolyl) formazan: Synthesis, crystal structure, thermal stability, and catalysis on the thermal decomposition of ammonium perchlorate

Ammonium perchlorate (AP) serves as an important component in solid propellants. Adding catalysts to facilitate its thermal decomposition can enhance the combustion performance of solid propellants. Inspiring by the remarkable thermal stability and resistance to mechanical stimuli of the 3-cyano-1,5-(5-nitro-1,2,4-triazolyl) formazan, four energetic metal salts with 3-cyano-1,5-(5-nitro-1,2,4-triazolyl) formazan as energy storage units were synthesized and well characterized. The molecular structures of the compounds 1-2 were confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The thermal behaviors and sensitivities of these new four energetic metal salts were determined by the differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and BAM methods. These new four energetic metal salts possess excellent thermal stability with decomposition peak temperatures over 259 degrees C and low impact and friction sensitivity (IS > 40 J, FS > 360 N). Additionally, the four energetic metal salts exhibited outstanding performance in accelerating the thermal decomposition of AP, the high-temperature peak decreased by 30 to 120 degrees C, and the heat release increased significantly, which was 1.1 to 2.8 times of pure AP. The decomposition activation energy (E-a) of pure AP and AP with 10 wt% compounds 1-4 were calculated using the Kissinger equations, respectively. The AP decomposition activation energy decreased by 9.41 to 18.45 kJmol(-1). These experimental results indicate that the four energetic metal salts are expected to be the alternative additives to accelerate the catalytic decomposition of AP in composite solid propellants.

Combination of Uric Acid and Pro-Inflammatory Cytokines in Discriminating Patients with Gout from Healthy Controls

Objective: The aim of present study was to explore whether the combination of serum uric acid and pro-inflammatory cytokines could improve the accuracy of diagnosis of gout. Methods: A total of 94 patients with gout were selected as the patient group, and 52 healthy subjects were selected as the control group. Serum levels of uric acid and pro-inflammatory cytokines (C-reactive protein (CRP), interleukin-6 (IL-6), and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha)) were measured in both groups. Correlation between serum uric acid and pro-inflammatory cytokines was assessed using Pearson correlation analysis. The area under curve (AUC) of CRP, IL-6, TNF-alpha combined with uric acid for the diagnosis of gout were evaluated by receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve method. Results: Compared with the control group, the levels of serum uric acid, CRP, TNF-alpha and IL-6 were significantly increased in the patients. Moreover, there was a positive correlation between serum uric acid and CRP (r = 0.179, P = 0.033), IL-6 (r = 0.194, P = 0.039), and TNF-alpha (r = 0.496, P < 0.001) levels. Furthermore, the AUCs of CRP, IL-6, TNF-alpha combined with uric acid level for the diagnosis of gout were 0.932, 0.884, and 0.972, respectively. Additionally, the AUC for the combination of uric acid, CRP, and TNF-alpha was 0.982 in discriminating patients with gout from healthy volunteers. Conclusion: The combination of serum uric acid and pro-inflammatory cytokines could improve the accuracy of diagnosis of gout.

High expression of aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) plays an important role in the formation of fibrous epulis

Objectives Epulis is considered to be a massive reactive lesion rather than a true neoplasia. AhR is thought to be associated with inflammation and development of neoplasms. Here, we aimed to observe the expression of AhR in fibrous epulis and explore its role and possible mechanism in the pathogenesis of epulis. Materials and Methods Epulis and normal gingival tissues were collected, and AhR expression was detected at the mRNA and protein levels by quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) and immunohistochemistry, respectively. The expression levels of proinflammatory cytokines and apoptosis-related factor genes in human periodontal ligament cells (hPDLCs) and human gingival fibroblasts (hGFs) transfected with AhR short interfering RNA (siRNA) or negative control siRNA, upon stimulation with lipopolysaccharide of Porphyromonas gingivalis (Pg-LPS), were then examined. Finally, the expression levels of the proinflammatory cytokines and apoptosis-related factor genes in the epulis tissues were observed by qPCR. Results AhR expression in fibrous epulis was significantly increased at both the mRNA and protein levels. The expression of proinflammatory cytokines and apoptosis-related factor genes in hPDLCs transfected with AhR siRNA was significantly decreased when stimulated with Pg-LPS. The same trends were observed for hGFs. The opposite trend was detected in the epulis tissues. Conclusion AhR may be a key factor in fibrous epulis pathogenesis that acts by regulating the expression of BCL2 family genes and inflammatory factor-related genes.

In this paper, we establish monotonicity formulas for capillary surfaces in the half-space R3+ and in the unit ball B3 and extend the result of Volkmann [27] for surfaces with free boundary. As applications, we obtain Li-Yau-type inequalities for the Willmore energy of capillary surfaces, and extend Fraser-Schoen’s optimal area estimate for minimal free boundary surfaces in B3 [10] to the capillary setting, which is different to another optimal area estimate proved by Brendle in [5].MSC Codes 53C42, 53A10, 49Q15 Copyright © 2024, The Authors. Investigation of the Induration Mechanism of Red Mud Pellets with Tartaric Acid Additions

Herein, tartaric acid (TA) was used as a binder to prepare red mud pellets. The effect of TA on the compressive strength and induration mechanism of the pellets containing TA was analyzed via the changes in crystal structure, functional groups, and valence states of the constituent elements. The induration mechanism of TAPE is likely the chemical reaction between TA and partial calcite along with complexation of TA with minerals containing Ca(II), Al(III), and Fe(III). The density functional theory calculation results revealed that the TA-Ca(II) complexation products in red mud were more stable than those of Al(III) and Fe(III).

Consequently, we give a new proof of Alexandrov-type theorem for embedded capillary constant mean curvature hypersurfaces with contact angle theta is an element of(0, pi\2] in the half-space or a half ball.
