Heavy Metal Distribution and Microbial Diversity of the Surrounding Soil and Tailings of Two Cu Mines in China

Mining activities can cause heavy metal pollution which affects soil microbial diversity. Current understanding on the impact of Cu mines especially that of bioavailable heavy metals on microbial communities is still limited. This study investigated heavy metal distribution and microbial diversity of the surrounding soil and tailings of two Cu mines from Tibet (JM) and Zhejiang (JD), China. Cu, Pb, Zn, and Cr concentrations in the soil around JM were 107.33 +/- 75.48, 29.21 +/- 19.66, 73.89 +/- 28.79, and 17.88 +/- 4.91 mg center dot kg(-1), respectively, and those of JD were 40.59 +/- 21.86, 27.00 +/- 19.40, 95.45 +/- 54.36, and 30.87 +/- 11.55 mg center dot kg(-1), respectively. For each mine, the sites closer to the mining area displayed higher PINemerow values and acid extractable contents of Cu (Cu-_AE), Zn (Zn-_AE), and Pb (Pb-_AE). The tailings samples showed lower microbial diversity and higher abundances of heavy metal-resistant organisms including the ones from the phyla Firmicutes and Bacteroidetes and the genera Bacteroides, Lactobacillus, and Staphylococcus than the surrounding soil samples. Canonical corresponding analysis (CCA) revealed that water content, altitude, electrical conductivity (EC), total concentration of Zn (Zn-_total), Cu-_AE, Zn-_AE, and Pb-_AE, and pH value were effective environmental factors shaping the structure of all the investigated communities. Acid extractable contents of Pb and Zn rather than their total concentrations were significantly correlated to JM surrounding soil microbial structure. Microbial structure differentiations of the surrounding soil of JM and JD were largely attributed to stochastic processes, suggested by the beta nearest taxon index (beta NTI).

The paper provides a detailed description of the topographical distribution characteristics, along-strike morphologic variations, and tectonic implications of the Kyushu-Palau Ridge (KPR) in the 13 degrees-17 degrees N regions. The description is based on multibeam bathymetric data that was recently collected in the mid-southern segment of KPR and its surrounding areas. The findings indicate that the KPR in the studied region comprises several discontinuous seamounts and seamount chains. Along the ridge running from east to west, there is significant variation in the topography of the seafloor. Visible on this ridge are numerous deep-sea depressions and apparent topographical discontinuities. Geological tectonic processes such as plate subduction and seafloor spreading largely determine the topography of the seafloor. During the beginning of the Parece Vela Basin (PVB) spreading, the pre-existing volcanic arcs fractured under east-west extensional stress, resulting in the development of prominent seamounts, sharp ridges, relief alternations, and rift basins in the KPR. The east-west stress was subsequently transmitted to the weak and inactive mid-ocean ridge in the West Philippine Basin (WPB), which was reactivated and resulted in an episode of magma-poor spreading during 30-26 Ma. This episode caused the KPR to move eastward, stretched, and destroyed its pre-existing structure.

A method of dynamic union control for intelligent mould bed system in ship block building

Mould bed is the most important equipment to control the deformation in the process of block construction. However, its height needs to be controlled separately based on the known height, and it affects the construction precision of block severely. Therefore, a dynamic union control method is proposed in this paper. Firstly, in order to realize the union control of mould bed system, the distribution types of mould bed system are defined, and a dynamic relationship is established, the determination algorithm number, position and height compensation layer number is proposed. Secondly, the fuzzy PID control based on neural network is used to realize the adaptive control of height according to the changes of pressure, so as to control the construction quality better of block. Thirdly, the MATLAB/Simulink module is used to verify the proposed method and shows that the response time is significantly shortened by 41% and 37.5% respectively.

Apart from the blood-brain barrier (BBB), the efficacy of immunotherapy for glioblastoma (GBM) is limited by the presence of intrinsic and adaptive immune resistance, implying that co-delivery of various immunotherapeutic agents or simultaneous regulation of different cells is urgently needed. Bacterial outer membrane vesicles (OMVs) offer a unique advantage in the treatment of GBM, owing to their multifunctional properties as carriers and immune adjuvants and their ability to cross the BBB. However, traditional OMVs can lead to toxic side effects and disruption of tight junctions in the BBB. Therefore, to enhance the in vivo safety and targeting capability of OMVs, we introduced engineered OMVs to reduce toxicity and further constructed a modularly assembled nanoplatform by performing simple peptide modifications. This nanoplatform demonstrates satisfactory biosafety and is able to continuously cross the BBB and target GBM with the assistance of Angiopep-2. Subsequently, immunogenic substances on OMVs, along with carried small-interfering RNA (siRNA) and doxorubicin, can promote and enhance the reprogramming and phagocytic abilities of macrophages and microglia, respectively, and increase the immunogenicity of GBM, ultimately overcoming GBM immune resistance to enhance the efficacy of immunotherapy. This OMVs-based nanoplatform provides a new paradigm and insights into the development of immunotherapy for GBM.

To tackle the challenges associated with traditional reinforced concrete structures, such as laborintensive construction and durability deterioration over time, this paper proposes an innovative concept called rebar-free concrete construction (RFCC) and explores its potential for future development. Three key aspects of RFCC, including materials, structures, and construction technologies, are comprehensively investigated in this study. It reveals that fiber-reinforced concrete is a promising material for RFCC as it addresses challenges related to load-carrying capacity, ductility, and compatibility with construction technologies, and reduces labor and enables construction in extreme conditions, such as lunar construction. In addition, it shows that bio-inspired structures and optimized designs can significantly contribute to RFCC through offering a balance between architectural aesthetics, load capacity, ductility, and construction efficiency. Furthermore, the paper proposes a design path for RFCC and presents its development prospects. In summary, this paper provides a comprehensive understanding of the innovative concept of RFCC and its potential for future developments. By exploring these aspects of RFCC, researchers and engineers can work towards developing sustainable and resilient construction solutions for the future.

Improved Methods for Retrieval of Chlorophyll Fluorescence from Satellite Observation in the Far-Red Band Using Singular Value Decomposition Algorithm

Solar-induced chlorophyll fluorescence (SIF) is highly correlated with photosynthesis and can be used for estimating gross primary productivity (GPP) and monitoring vegetation stress. The far-red band of the solar Fraunhofer lines (FLs) is close to the strongest SIF emission peak and is unaffected by chlorophyll absorption, making it suitable for SIF intensity retrieval. In this study, we propose a retrieval window for far-red SIF, significantly enhancing the sensitivity of data-driven methods to SIF signals near 757 nm. This window introduces a weak O2 absorption band based on the FLs window, allowing for better separation of SIF signals from satellite spectra by altering the shape of specific singular vectors. Additionally, a frequency shift correction algorithm based on standard non-shifted reference spectra is proposed to discuss and eliminate the influence of the Doppler effect. SIF intensity retrieval was achieved using data from the GOSAT satellite, and the retrieved SIF was validated using GPP, enhanced vegetation index (EVI) from the MODIS platform, and published GOSAT SIF products. The validation results indicate that the SIF products provided in this study exhibit higher fitting goodness with GPP and EVI at high spatiotemporal resolutions, with improvements ranging from 55% to 129%. At low spatiotemporal resolutions, the SIF product provided in this study shows higher consistency with EVI and GPP spatially.

The rapid advancement of the photovoltaic (PV) industry has elevated the recycling and reuse of decommissioned PV modules to critical challenges, essential for tackling environmental concerns and achieving resource reutilization. To facilitate the efficient degradation of PV modules and recycling of silicon materials, this study proposes a PV module degradation and recycling process based on supercritical n-butanol. The effects of various factors on the degradation rate of PV modules were systematically evaluated using single-factor studies to select an appropriate range of process parameters for optimization. Employing the response surface methodology (RSM) for the meticulous optimization of process parameters, the optimized parameters were as follows: n-butanol solvent volume of 470 ml, temperature of 328 °C for 83 minutes, resulting in a module degradation rate of up to 99 %. A second-order regression model was established to predict degradation efficiency. The high applicability of the fitted model was verified by comparing the actual degradation rates with the model's predicted values. Finally, the superiority of this recycling method was validated by characterizing the solar cells obtained through the supercritical method and comparing these characteristics with those of cells disassembled mechanically. © 2024, The Authors. Probing Hydrophobic Interactions between Polymer Surfaces and Air Bubbles or Oil Droplets: Effects of Molecular Weight and Surfactants

Hydrophobic interaction plays an important role innumerous interfacial phenomena and biophysical and industrial processes. In this work, polystyrene (PS) was used as a modelhydrophobic polymer for investigating its hydrophobic interactionwith highly deformable objects (i.e., air bubbles and oil droplets) inaqueous solutions. The effects of polymer molecular weight,solvent (i.e., addition of ethanol to water), the presence of surface-active species, and hydrodynamic conditions were investigated, viadirect surface force measurements using the bubble/drop probeatomic force microscopy (AFM) technique and theoreticalcalculations based on the Reynolds lubrication theory andaugmented Young-Laplace equation by including the effect ofdisjoining pressure. It was found that the PS of low molecularweight (i.e., PS590 and PS810) showed slightly weaker hydrophobic interactions with air bubbles or oil droplets, as compared toglassy PS of higher molecular weight (i.e., PS1110, PS2330, PS46300, and PS1M). The hydrophobic interaction between PS and airbubbles in a 1 M NaCl aqueous solution with 10 vol % ethanol was weaker than that in the bare aqueous solution. Such effects onthe hydrophobic interactions are possibly achieved by influencing the structuring/ordering of water molecules close to thehydrophobic polymer surfaces by tuning the surface chain mobility and surface roughness of polymers. It was found that the additionof three surface-active species, i.e., cetyltrimethylammonium chloride (CTAC), Pluronic F-127, and sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS),to the aqueous media could suppress the attachment of the hydrophobic polymer and air bubbles or oil droplets, most likely causedby the additional steric repulsion due to the adsorbed surface-active species at the bubble/polymer/oil interfaces. Prolonged QTc interval predicts long-term mortality in cirrhosis: a propensity score matching analysis

Background Prolonged corrected QT (QTc) interval is a hallmark of cirrhotic cardiomyopathy (CCM) and has been ascertained to predict mortality in cirrhosis. However, some critical issues remain to be addressed including unanimous cut-off, calculation approach and applicable population. Methods A total of 274 patients with cirrhosis were included. The prolonged QTc interval over 440 ms according to adjusted Fridericia's formula was used to stratify enrolled subjects. Independent predictors of 3-year mortality were identified with Cox regression model. The Kaplan-Meier method was implemented to obtain survival curves. To reduce impact of selection bias and possible confounders, a propensity score matching (PSM) analysis was used. Results QTc > 440 ms was an independent risk factor in the entire cohort and PSM subset (HR 2.532, 95% CI 1.431-4.480, p=.001;HR 2.802, 95% CI 1.171-6.701, p=.021, respectively). Subgroup analysis showed that QTc > 440 ms was an independent predictor in cirrhotics with age <= 60 years (HR = 1.02, p=.035) and in the presence of ascites (HR = 1.01, p=.008). Conclusions The prolonged QTc interval might help to identify patients with high-risk of all-cause mortality.

Electrochemically generated chemiluminescence (ECL) has attracted significant interest over the past decades, ranging from fundamental studies on highly efficient electron-to-photon interconversion to practical bioassays. Nonetheless, the ECL efficiency (phi(ECL)) of most emitters is low, which significantly hampers further development. Herein, this work reports a highly robust carbon nitride film with unusually enhanced ECL efficiency (2256 times higher than that of the reference Ru(bpy)(3)Cl-2/K2S2O8). Double crystallization, which provides the primary interaction of carbon nitride with the substrate and subsequent growth, plays a crucial role in the preparation. The improved ECL efficiency is ascribed to little pinholes suppressing futile co-reagent reduction, maintenance of more orbit-delocalized heptazine subunits improving ECL kinetics, and high transparency avoiding self-absorption. As a potential application, an ultrasensitive visual DNA biosensor by the naked eye is further successfully developed with a linear detection range of 100 pm to 1 mu m and limit of detection of 27 pm (S/N = 3).
