Redescription of a rarely encountered species Travisa chinensis Grube, 1869 (Annelida, Travisiidae), including a description of a new species of Travisa from Amoy, China

The original description of Travisia chinensis Grube, 1869 was incomplete, leading to confusion with other species. To clarify the status of this species, we provide a redescription of, and remarks on, T. chinensis based on an examination of the type specimen. We also describe Travisia amoyanus sp. nov., collected from Xiamen (Amoy), China, and originally identified as T. chinensis by Monro (1934). The new species can be distinguished from its congeners by a combination of the following characters: the total number of segments (34 or 35) and chaetigers (33 or 34), parapodial lappets first from chaetiger 15, and a pygidium with a large ventral triangular cirrus and about six encircling lateral cirri. Genetic distances and phylogenetic analyses based on the mitochondrial (16S rRNA) and nuclear (18S rRNA) genes support the identity of the new species.

Reevaluation of the Systematic Status of Branchinotogluma (Annelida, Polynoidae), with the Establishment of Two New Species

Branchinotogluma is one of the most diverse genera among the polynoids inhabiting deep-sea chemosynthetic environments. A total of 14 species have been described from the hydrothermal vents and cold seeps worldwide. Our phylogenetic analyses based on four genes (COI, 16S, 18S, and 28S rRNA) recovered the current Branchinotogluma as paraphyletic, with seven clades scattered in two main clades. The monophyly of the main clade composed of Branchinotogluma (except Branchinotogluma segonzaci), Branchipolynoe, and Peinaleopolynoe is supported by the presence of 20-21 segments with 9-10 pairs of elytra, ventral papillae starting from segment 12 in males, and arborescent branchiae. The monophyly of another main clade composed of B. segonzaci, Bathykurila, Lepidonotopodium, Levensteiniella, and Thermopolynoe is supported by the presence of usually 22-30 segments with 11 pairs of elytra and the lack of ventral papillae in females. In addition, our study recognized two new species, Branchinotogluma nanhaiensis sp. nov. and B. robusta sp. nov., based on specimens collected from the deep-sea cold seeps in the South China Sea. Both the morphology and molecular phylogenetic analyses support the validity of the two new species and the sister relationships between B. nanhaiensis and B. japonicus and between B. robusta and B. pettiboneae as well.

Rational Design and Synthesis of Lignin-Derived Smart Sunscreens

Lignin exhibits a long-active UV-blocking property due to its macromolecular aromatic structure and unique semiquione-quione-hydroquione transition. However, its poor absorbance in UVA region (320-400 nm) and irregular aggregation are still the obstacles. Herein, active spirapyrane (SP-Br) is synthesized and covalently introduced into alkali lignin (AL) to construct photo-stimulated UV-absorbing enhancement sunscreen actives (AL-SPn). The introduction of SP significantly improved the absorbance of AL in UVA region and its aggregation is effectively eased. When the optimal AL-SP3 solution is exposed to UV irradiation, the color turned purple, and the absorbance in UVA region further improved as the unconjugated SP transformed into conjugated merocyanine (MC) structure. When the light is removed, the solution recovered light yellow. The antioxidant property of AL endow the reversible SP-MC transformation with good cyclic stability. As-prepared AL-SP3 based sunscreen exhibit obvious photo-stimulated enhancement effect. The sun protection factor (SPF) improved from 23 to 89 after 4 h irradiation, and can maintain the high performance for another 8 h. In addition, it exhibit low permeation and good biocompatibily in vitro and vivo, demonstrating its good potential in practical use.

Ultraflexible Reedlike Carbon Nanofiber Membranes Decorated with Ni-Co-S Nanosheets and Fe2O3-C Core-Shell Nanoneedle Arrays as Electrodes of Flexible Quasi-Solid-State Asymmetric Supercapacitors

Flexible and lightweight supercapacitors with satisfactory energy density and long-term stability are urgently required to provide power for flexible, foldable, and wearable electronic devices. Herein, reedlike carbon nanofibers (RCNFs) with hierarchical macropores in the core and micropores and honeycomb mesopores in the shell are designed by electrospinning, carbonization, and etching, leading to high electronic conductivity and satisfactory mechanical flexibility and foldability. Subsequently, flowerlike Ni-Co-S nanoarrays are grown in situ on RCNFs by electrodeposition, and fern leaf-like Fe2O3-C core-shell nanoneedles, in which porous Fe2O3 are coated with ultrathin carbon layers, are decorated on RCNFs via hydrothermal synthesis, polydopamine modification, and thermal annealing. Because of unique core-shell structures and synergistic effects of these active components, the RCNF@ Ni-Co-S cathode and the RCNF@Fe2O3-C anode exhibit high specific capacitances of 1728 and 221.5 F g(-1) at 1 A g(-1), respectively. With a poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA)/potassium hydroxide (KOH) solid gel as both an electrolyte and a separator, the assembled flexible quasi-solid-state asymmetric supercapacitor achieves a high energy density of 44.9 W h kg(-1) at 1549.7 W kg(-1), and the capacitance remains at 94% after bending the asymmetric supercapacitor to 180 degrees. The flexible electrodes with excellent electrochemical performances are highly promising for high-performance wearable energy storage devices.

Nitrogen-rich and core-sheath polyamide/polyethyleneimine@Zr-MOF for iodine adsorption and nerve agent simulant degradation

Radioactive nuclides and highly toxic organophosphates are typical deadly threats. Materials with the function of radioactive substances adsorption and organophosphates degradation provide double protection. Herein, dual-functional polyamide (PA)/polyethyleneimine (PEI)@Zr-MOF fiber composite membranes, fabricated by in-situ solvothermal growth of Zr-MOF on PA/PEI electrospun fiber membranes, are designed for protection against two typical model compounds of iodine and dimethyl 4-nitrophenyl phosphate (DMNP). Benefiting from the unique core-sheath structure composed of inner nitrogen-rich fibers and outer porous Zr-MOF, the composite membranes rapidly enrich iodine through abundant active sites of the outer sheath and form complexes with the amine of inner PEI, exhibiting a highly competitive adsorption capacity of 609 mg g(-1). Moreover, it can adsorb and degrade DMNP with the synergy of PEI component and Zr-MOF, achieving an 80 % removal of DMNP within 7 min without any additional co-catalyst. This work provides a feasible strategy to fabricate dual-functional materials that protect against radioactive and organophosphorus contaminants.

Hierarchical TiO2 Nanorod Arrays/Carbon Nanofiber Membranes for Oil-in-Water Emulsion Separation

Although much attention has been paid to efficient treatment of oily wastewater, it is still a tough challenge to treat oilin-water emulsions with tiny oil droplets. In this work, hierarchical TiO2 nanorod arrays/carbon nanofiber composite membranes with multilevel pore structure, attractive superhydrophilicity, and underwater superoleophobicity are fabricated for oil-in-water emulsion separation by a facile electrospinning method followed by hydrothermal synthesis. These membranes exhibit an efficient oil-in-water emulsion separation performance with a separation efficiency above 99% and a high separation flux of 1108.8 L m(-2) h(-1). Interestingly, by inducing hydroxyl groups on TiO2 via UV irradiation, the separation performance is improved further because of the improved hydrophilicity. Simultaneously, benefiting from the excellent chemical stability of the rutile-phase TiO2, the composite membrane shows outstanding corrosion resistance, high temperature resistance, and good recyclability. The composite membrane has a promising prospect in the field of oil-in-water emulsion separation and resource recovery.

The genusDendronereisPeters, 1854 is characterized in the polychaete family Nereididae by its feather-shaped branchiae on the anterior segments. In this study, we present the first complete mitogenome ofDendronereis, represented ***,2019, collected from Beibu Gulf, China. The nucleotide composition is biased toward A + T nucleotides, accounting 31.5% for A, 22.3% for C, 14.7% for G and 31.5% for T. The assembled mitogenome is 15,763 bp in length, with a typical set of 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), 22 transfer RNA (tRNA), 2 ribosomal RNA (rRNA), and 1 non-coding control region. All genes are encoded on H-strand. The control region is 1260 bp in length and located between tRNA-Gly and tRNA-Met. Phylogenetic study showed *** arranged with high support into the clade of Namanereidinae. The complete mitogenome provides important molecular data for investigating the phylogeny and evolution of the nereid animals.

Cloudinids have long been considered the earliest biomineralizing metazoans, but their affinities have remained contentious and undetermined. Based on well-preserved ultrastructures of two taxa, we here propose new interpretations regarding both their extent of original biomineralization and their phylogenetic affinity. One of these taxa is a new cloudinid from Mongolia, Zuunia chimidtsereni gen. et sp. nov., which exhibits key characteristics of submicrometric kerogenous lamellae, plastic tubewall deformation, and tube-wall delamination. Multiple carbonaceous lamellae are also discovered in Cloudina from Namibia and Paraguay, which we interpret to have originated from chitinous or collagenous fabrics. We deduce that these cloudinids were predominantly originally organic (chitinous or collagenous), and postmortem decay and taphonomic mineralization resulted in the formation of aragonite and/or calcite. Further, based on our ultrastructural characterization and other morphological similarities, we suggest that the cloudinids should most parsimoniously be assigned to annelids with originally organic tubes.

Revision of Sinonereis wu & Sun, 1979 (Annelida: Nereididae)

The genus Sinonereis wu & Sun, 1979 and the species Sinonereis heteropoela wu & Sun, 1979 were described from Chinese waters, based on only epitokous specimens with modified dorsal cirri in chaetigers 5-7 and bare pharynx. In the same publication, another species based on only atokes was described, Nicon sinica wu & Sun, 1979. We show that N. sinica is a junior synonym of S. heteropoda based on their affinities in chaetal and parapodial features. We redefine Sinonereis and formally synonymize N. sinica and S. heteropoda. Sinonereis closely resembles Nicon Kinberg, 1865 and Kainonereis Chamberlin, 1919, but Sinonereis differs from them by having napiform dorsal cirri in chaetigers 5-7, and by lacking notopodial dorsal ligules in chaetiger 3 in both atokes and epitokes.
