Probing and Manipulating Noncovalent Interactions in Functional Polymeric Systems

Noncovalent interactions, which usually feature tunable strength, reversibility, and environmental adaptability, have been recognized as driving forces in a variety of biological and chemical processes, contributing to the recognition between molecules, the formation of molecule clusters, and the establishment of complex structures of macromolecules. The marriage of noncovalent interactions and conventional covalent polymers offers the systems novel mechanical, physicochemical, and biological properties, which are highly dependent on the binding mechanisms of the noncovalent interactions that can be illuminated via quantification. This review systematically discusses the nano mechanical characterization of typical noncovalent interactions in polymeric systems, mainly through direct force measurements at microscopic, nanoscopic, and molecular levels, which provide quantitative information (e.g., ranges, strengths, and dynamics) on the binding behaviors. The fundamental understandings of intermolecular and interfacial interactions are then correlated to the macroscopic performances of a series of noncovalently bonded polymers, whose functions (e.g., stimuli-responsiveness, self-healing capacity, universal adhesiveness) can be customized through the manipulation of the noncovalent interactions, providing insights into the rational design of advanced materials with applications in biomedical, energy, environmental, and other engineering fields.

Optimizing fracturing techniques for enhanced hydrate dissociation in low-permeability reservoirs: Insights from numerical simulation

Natural gas hydrate represents an environmentally friendly alternative energy. However, the low-permeability hydrate reservoirs pose significant challenges to commercial production. To optimize hydrate production, reservoir stimulation methods like hydraulic fracturing, gas fracturing, and explosive fracturing are potential. In the investigation of the fracturing effect on hydrate dissociation behavior, we developed a three-dimensional model that comprehensively incorporates the arrangement of fracture planes, encompassing fracture permeability, spacing, and height. The model was implemented using a self-developed hydrate simulator which was validated at multiple scales. We firstly conducted a comparative analysis, contrasting the conventional depressurization method in horizontal wells with a combined depressurization and fracturing method. The comparison suggested that fracturing brings significant promotion (113.5%) on hydrate dissociation. Sensitivity analysis revealed fracture permeability and fracture height evidently exhibit an optimal value that facilitates the dissociation behavior. The optimal value of fracture permeability is dependent on the geological background. The optimal value of fracture height occurs just before penetrating the hydrate-bearing sediment layer and the overlying/underlying formations, i.e., near the thickness of the hydrate-bearing sediment layer. The impact of spacing on gas volume is limited while decreasing the spacing leads to more evident localized dissociation and differential subsidence of hydrate reservoir. It is necessary to balance production and geological risks when selecting the fracture spacing. The conclusions suggest that the fracturing operation need to be optimized by controlling the injection rate and the fracturing interval. Spectrum-Resolved Electrochemiluminescence to Multiplex the Immunoassay and DNA Probe Assay

The investigation on electrochemiluminescence (ECL) multiplexing bioassays mainly focuses on simultaneously detecting either proteins or nucleic acids. To overcome the limitation of a short waveband for spectrum-resolved ECL multiplexing bioassays, herein, a highly monochromatic (FWHM <40 nm) and bandgap-engineered ECL luminophore, that is, mercaptopropionic acid-capped and Zn2+-mediated aggregation-induced emission (AIE) assembly of Au nanocrystals (NCs) (Zn2+-AIE-AuNCs), of strong emission and the maximum emission wavelength at 485 nm is developed. The highly monochromatic and bandgap-engineered ECL (485 nm) of Zn2+-AIE-AuNCs can multiplex with the single-waveband and surface-defect-involved ECL (775 nm) of dual-stabilizer-capped CuInS2@ZnS NCs (CIS@ZnS-NCs), enabling a spectrum-resolved ECL multiplexing strategy with different NCs luminophores of a similar particle size as tags. This ECL multiplexing strategy can be utilized to simultaneously detect antigen and DNA probe together without any additional signal amplification procedure and obvious spectroscopic cross-talk, in which the highly monochromatic ECL from Zn2+-AIE-AuNCs is utilized to dynamically determine human carcinoembryonic antigen from 1 pg/mL to 50 ng/mL with a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.3 pg/mL, while the single -waveband ECL from CIS@ZnS-NCs is employed to linearly detect wild-type p53 from 1 pM to 50 nM with a LOD of 0.5 pM. The ECL immunoassay of the proposed strategy is free from the interference of the synchronously conducted DNA probe assay and vice versa, which would open an avenue to couple the immunoassay and DNA probe assay together for clinical colon and breast cancer identification.

The issue of thermal loss during the depressurization extraction of natural gas hydrates has long been a significant challenge for achieving long-term stable production. In the context of thermal stimulation extraction, researchers have proposed four injection methods: hot water injection, steam injection, wellbore electric heating, and low-frequency electric heating, and have conducted relevant studies. However, a comprehensive evaluation comparing the advantages and disadvantages of these four thermal stimulation extraction methods is still lacking. This research, using a self-developed hydrate numerical simulator, constructed extraction class III hydrate deposits models for the four injection methods and conducted long-term extraction simulations over a period of five years. The results indicate that low-frequency electric heating significantly enhances extraction efficiency under various permeability reservoir conditions. Its ability to achieve a large heating range and provide wellbore protection confers distinct advantages. In contrast, the hot water injection method imposes stringent requirements on reservoir permeability. Both steam injection and wellbore electric heating exhibit notable similarities in multiple physical fields and fluid production outcomes. This study offers valuable insights and reference points for the selection of thermal stimulation methods in future hydrate extraction engineering.

An accurate measurement of high-reflective objects by using 3D structured light

Using three-dimensional structured light to measure high -reflective objects accurately is a big challenge. Some overexposed and blurred areas in the structured light fringe patterns lead to the loss of semantic and texture information on the object surface, further leading to 3D model reconstruction errors. To solve this problem, a lightweight novel network, Deformable Convolutional and Multi -scale Convolutional Network (DcMcNet), is proposed for repairing highly reflectively distorted regions in sinusoidal fringe patterns and the Gray code binary fringe patterns. DcMcNet uses deformable convolution and multi -scale convolution to realize the effective utilization of multiscale global features in repairing highly reflective distorted regions and can adapt well to the different shapes of these regions. In addition, virtual software is used to acquire large-scale and high-fidelity datasets and a diverse loss function is constructed to better optimize DcMcNet. Depth reconstruction experiments of sinusoidal fringe patterns and point cloud reconstruction experiments of Gray code binary fringe patterns show that our method can repair highly reflective distortion regions with high accuracy, and for aeronautical blades, the MAE of the depth map is reduced from 0.1608 to 0.0675, and the point cloud coverage is improved from 76.64% to 98.95%.

Overuse wrist injuries in adolescent platform and springboard divers

To investigate overuse wrist injuries in adolescent divers using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The bilateral wrists (76 wrists) of 38 professional divers were examined by MRI;42 wrists with pain were placed in the symptomatic group, and 34 wrists without pain were placed in the asymptomatic group. Two experienced radiologists assessed the wrist injuries. Chi-square test was used to compare the difference in injuries between the two groups. Subchondral osteosclerosis was observed in 47.62% of symptomatic wrists and 52.94% of asymptomatic wrists. Distal radial epiphyseal plate injury was detected in 42.86% of symptomatic wrists and 11.76% of asymptomatic wrists. Triangular fibrocartilage complex injury was observed in 19.04% of symptomatic wrists and 8.82% of asymptomatic wrists. Bursae around the wrist were observed in 21.42% of symptomatic wrists and 17.64% of asymptomatic wrists. The incidence of distal radial epiphyseal plate injury was higher in the symptomatic group than in the asymptomatic group (P = 0.007), however, other injuries were not statistically different between the two groups (P > 0.05). This study demonstrated that adolescent divers had various wrist injuries, and distal radial epiphyseal plate injury was more common in the symptomatic wrist;these injuries show no specific clinical symptoms and are easily overlooked.

Electromagnetic killing is characterized by high efficiency and low cost when dealing with the threat of low, slow and small cluster targets. Firstly, For the characteristics of electromagnetic energy to target can be calculated and the damage effect can be assessed, this paper proposed power to target, cost of attack and other indicators to calculate the target threat degree. Secondly, this paper proposed an assessment method based on GWO-IEF (Grey Wolf Optimizer-Intuitionistic Fuzzy Entropy) to solve the problem of low efficiency of threat degree calculation. Finally, Simulation proves that this method has high computational efficiency and solution accuracy, and compared with the traditional target threat assessment method based on dynFWA-IEF (Dynamic Search Fireworks Algorithm-Intuitionistic Fuzzy Entropy), the computational speed is improved by nearly 54.63%, and the generated results are consistent with the expected electromagnetic weapon attack capability. ©2024 IEEE.

Natural gas hydrates are a promising and environmentally sustainable energy resource, but their commercial production remains challenging. External heating is crucial for improving production efficiency. In this study, we employed a self-developed simulator (IGG-hydrate) to compare the thermal performance of three key heating methods: electric heating (EH), steam injection (SI), and hot water injection (WI). Quantitative indicators, including heating and depressurization thresholds, were introduced to assess the effectiveness of each method. The results demonstrate that external heating significantly facilitates hydrate dissociation, with electric heating and steam injection showing comparable gas production rates and early-stage efficiency. However, both electric heating and steam injection methods can cause localized overheating near injection wells, leading to energy inefficiency. In contrast, hot water injection achieves a more uniform temperature distribution and a broader heating range, while avoiding excessive temperature rise. However, it also reduces depressurization efficiency and increases subsidence near the wells. To optimize performance, we propose a steam-water alternating injection strategy: steam is injected initially for rapid dissociation near the wells, followed by hot water injection to extend the heating range and maintain thermal efficiency with the same equipment.

Influence of temperature and humidity coupling on rutting deformation of asphalt pavement

In this article, ABAQUS finite-element software is used to establish an asphalt pavement structure model under high-temperature environment in summer. The changes in the temperature field and moisture concentration field of asphalt pavement are studied under the condition of 1-day continuous temperature change. The creep model is used to analyse the influence of ambient temperature and humidity on the rutting deformation of asphalt pavement. The results show that the maximum temperature of asphalt pavement can reach 60 degrees C in the high-temperature environment in summer. The temperature accumulation effect causes the temperature of the middle and lower layers to increase by approximately 10 degrees C, which easily induces rutting. Ambient humidity has a great influence on the change in moisture concentration in the upper layer. Considering the influence of ambient humidity in the high-temperature environment, the rut depth increases by 67%.
