Somatic embryogenesis (SE) is a critical transition from vegetative to embryogenic growth in higher plants;however, few studies have investigated the mechanism that regulates SE initial differentiation. Most cotton varieties have not undergone regeneration by SE, so only a few varieties can be used in genetic engineering. Here, two varieties of cotton with different SE capabilities (HD, higher differentiation and LD, lower differentiation) were analyzed by high throughout RNA-Seq at the preinduction stage (0h) and two induction stages (3h and 3d) under callus-induction medium (CIM). About 1150 million clean reads were obtained from 98.21% raw data. Transcriptomic analysis revealed that "protein kinase activity" and "oxidoreductase activity" were highly represented GO terms during the same and different treatment stages among HD and LD. Moreover, several stress-related transcription factors might play important roles in SE initiation. The SE-related regulation genes (SERKs) showed different expression patterns between HD and LD. Furthermore, the complex auxin and ethylene signaling pathway contributes to initiation of differentiation in SE. Thus, our RNA-sequencing of comparative transcriptome analysis will lay a foundation for future studies to better define early somatic formation in cotton with different SE capabilities.

Disclosed is a method for purifying and concentrating a foot-and-mouth disease virus inactivated antigen, comprising the steps of: (1) adding an adaptor protein with the amino acid sequence as shown in SEQ ID NO: 2 into the foot-and-mouth disease virus inactivated antigen, mixing homogeneously, and incubating;(2) adding a purified carrier, mixing homogeneously, and incubating the mixture, wherein the purified carrier is the skeleton of Lactococcus lactis;and (3) centrifuging and obtaining a precipitate. The purifying and concentrating method can efficiently purify the foot-and-mouth disease virus inactivated antigen and efficiently remove impurities, and has a high antigen recovery efficiency, large concentration multiple, low equipment requirement, simple operation, and low cost.

Dual-band electrochromic composite materials are of utmost importance in advancing the electrochromic field toward achieving the ideal smart window with independent control over visible and near-infrared (NIR) radiation. However, such composites usually need deliberate architecting of their mesoscale structure (e.g., via block copolymer-templating method) to make the electrolyte contact with both NIR and visible-light modulating components. Herein, instead of arduously making exterior pores, the intrinsic structural tunnels are utilized directly in electrochromic materials to facilitate the accommodation and transportation of insertion ions, which permit the infiltration of the electrolyte to be in contact with both visible (Prussian blue) and NIR-light modulating components (nonstoichiometric tungsten oxide). Such simple-fabricated composite materials exhibit excellent dual-band electrochromic performance with an unprecedented dynamic optical range for modulation of visible and NIR light, up to 71.2% at 633 nm and 64.8% at 1600 nm, respectively.

Non-invasive measurement of uterine activity using electrohysterogram (EHG) surface electrodes has been attempted to monitor uterine contraction. This study aimed to computationally compare the performance of acquiring EHG signals using monopolar electrode and three types of Laplacian concentric ring electrodes (bipolar, quasi-bipolar and tri-polar). With the implementation of dipole band model and abdomen model, the performances of four electrodes in terms of the local sensitivity were quantified by potential attenuation. Furthermore, the effects of fat and muscle thickness on potential attenuation were evaluated using the bipolar and tri-polar electrodes with different radius. The results showed that all the four types of electrodes detected the simulated EHG signals with consistency. That the bipolar and tri-polar electrodes had greater attenuations than the others, and the shorter distance between the origin and location of dipole band at 20 dB attenuation, indicating that they had relatively better local sensitivity. In addition, ANOVA analysis showed that, for all the electrodes with different outer ring radius, the effects of fat and muscle on potential attenuation were significant (all p < 0.01). It is therefore concluded that the bipolar and tri-polar electrodes had higher local sensitivity than the others, indicating that they can be applied to detect EHG effectively.

Acanthopanacis Cortex (AC) is a Chinese herbal medicine (Wu-Jia-Pi in PinYin) which is recognized with therapeutic effect of "strengthening bone and sinew", yet its regulating biological network is still obscure. In this study, started from AC's chemical compounds, their direct target proteins were filtered out. Then these targeted proteins were annotated with biological processes under the framework of Gene Ontology (GO) terms' hierarchical networks which were overrepresented and enriched with them with statistic significant p-value set to 0.05. In the biological process hierarchy networks, ossification formed a big one with bone formation associated biological processes. Further protein-protein interaction analysis with these targeted proteins and bone expressed ones formed a clear and concise protein-regulation network for ossification which should be responsible for the therapeutic effect of "strengthening bone and sinew". This study proposed a new approach of analyzing biological functions of a specified Chinese herbal medicine targeting certain therapeutic effect.
