To realize clinical application of antibacterial photodynamic therapy (aPDT), one of the most arduous challenges is how to render aPDT agents high selectivity against bacterial pathogens. In light of the fact that amino group-containing lipids are rich on the outer surfaces of Gram-positive bacteria, we herein constructed an alkynyl-dangling ruthenium(II) polypyridine complex (Ru2) to preferentially label Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) over mammalian cells via the amino-yne bio-orthogonal click reaction. Thanks to the strong singlet oxygen generation ability, Ru2 could photo-inactivate S. aureus and MRSA effectively and specifically. Phosphatidylethanolamine (PE) molecules also exist in mammalian cells but are not accessible for Ru2, leading to its poor binding/uptake and negligible cytotoxicity in the dark and upon irradiation towards mammalian cells as well as low hemolysis, all favorable for aPDT application.

The phenolic compound contents, antioxidant capacities, and alpha-amylase and tyrosinase inhibitory activities of 10 wild and 19 cultivated blueberries grown in northeast China were evaluated. The results showed that the alpha-amylase inhibitory activities of the blueberries represented, by 1/IC50, correlated with their total phenolic contents (TPCs). Moreover, the tyrosinase inhibitory activities correlated with the total anthocyanin contents (TACs). High-performance liquid chromatography and electrospray mass spectrometry were conducted to determine and identify seven phenolic acids. The average caffeic acid contents of the cultivated and wild blueberries were 277.37 and 17.71 mu g/g, respectively. The total phenolic, anthocyanin, and flavonoid contents were determined. Wild blueberries have higher TPCs, alpha-amylase inhibitory activities, and antioxidant capacities. Cultivated blueberries have higher TACs and exhibit tyrosinase inhibitory activities similar to those of the wild ones. Practical applications This study revealed that wild blueberries have high alpha-amylase inhibitory activities and are effective as natural alpha-amylase inhibitors for the treatment of diabetes. In addition, wild blueberries were found to be rich in phenolics and have high antioxidant capacities. Thus, because of these properties, wild blueberry products with antidiabetic and antioxidant potential can be developed for use in biomedical and pharmaceutical industries.

A novel electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy method for determination of rabbit IgG was presented. Anti rabbit IgG antibody was bound to Fe3O4 nanoparticles (FeNPs). The FeNPs were used as probe to give ESR signal. After the optimization of the assay, a molar ratio 500:1 of antibody to FeNPs was selected. The sepharose beads were used as solid phase and used to separate the analyte from the sample solution. Two typical immunoassay formats, sandwich and competitive formats, were applied to the determination of IgG. The analytical sensitivities obtained by sandwich and competitive formats were 0.13 mu g mL(-1) and 0.56 mu g mL(-1), respectively. The two formats were applied to the determination of the rabbit IgG in rabbit serum. The diluted sample was directly analyzed and other additional sample treatment was not required. The analytical results of the spiked samples indicated that the recoveries of the analytes were acceptable. Furthermore, the sample preparation time used in this method is shorter than most existing immunoassay methods.

A rapid and effective sample pretreatment method, dispersant-assisted dynamic microwave extraction, was first applied to the extraction of six triazine herbicides from rice. The dynamic microwave extraction was coupled with matrix solid-phase dispersion (MSPD). The dispersant in MSPD was used to disperse the sample and adsorb impurities. Microwave irradiation was used to promote the transfer of the analyte and accelerate the extraction. The extraction and clean-up were performed simultaneously. The effects of experimental parameters, including the solvent type, volume of the extraction solvent, microwave power, type of dispersant, mass ratio of dispersant to rice, and flow rate of the extraction solvent, on the recoveries of the analytes were investigated. The limits of detection for the analytes ranged from 0.62 to 1.79 mu g kg(-1). The recoveries of the triazine herbicides in spiked rice samples were in the range of 84.3-101%, and the relative standard deviations were lower than 6.2%.
