Automatically identifying semantic concepts from medical images provides multimodal insights for clinical research. To study the effectiveness of concept detection on large scale medical images, we reconstructed over 230,000 medical image-concepts pairs collected from the ImageCLEFcaption 2018 evaluation task. A transfer learning-based multi-label classification model was used to predict multiple high-frequency concepts for medical images. Semantically relevant concepts of visually similar medical images were identified by the image retrieval-based topic model. The results showed that the transfer learning method achieved F1 score of 0.1298, which was comparable with the state of art methods in the ImageCLEFcaption tasks. The image retrieval-based method contributed to the recall performance but reduced the overall F1 score, since the retrieval results of the search engine introduced irrelevant concepts. Although our proposed method achieved second-best performance in the concept detection subtask of ImageCLEFcaption 2018, there will be plenty of further work to improve the concept detection with better understanding the medical images.

The phenolic compound contents, antioxidant capacities, and alpha-amylase and tyrosinase inhibitory activities of 10 wild and 19 cultivated blueberries grown in northeast China were evaluated. The results showed that the alpha-amylase inhibitory activities of the blueberries represented, by 1/IC50, correlated with their total phenolic contents (TPCs). Moreover, the tyrosinase inhibitory activities correlated with the total anthocyanin contents (TACs). High-performance liquid chromatography and electrospray mass spectrometry were conducted to determine and identify seven phenolic acids. The average caffeic acid contents of the cultivated and wild blueberries were 277.37 and 17.71 mu g/g, respectively. The total phenolic, anthocyanin, and flavonoid contents were determined. Wild blueberries have higher TPCs, alpha-amylase inhibitory activities, and antioxidant capacities. Cultivated blueberries have higher TACs and exhibit tyrosinase inhibitory activities similar to those of the wild ones. Practical applications This study revealed that wild blueberries have high alpha-amylase inhibitory activities and are effective as natural alpha-amylase inhibitors for the treatment of diabetes. In addition, wild blueberries were found to be rich in phenolics and have high antioxidant capacities. Thus, because of these properties, wild blueberry products with antidiabetic and antioxidant potential can be developed for use in biomedical and pharmaceutical industries.

Much is known about the generation, removal, and roles of 5-methylcytosine (5mC) in eukaryote DNA, and there is a growing body of evidence regarding N6-methyladenine, but very little is known about N4-methylcytosine (4mC) in the DNA of eukaryotes. The gene for the first metazoan DNA methyltransferase generating 4mC (N4CMT) was reported and characterized recently by others, in tiny freshwater invertebrates called bdelloid rotifers. Bdelloid rotifers are ancient, apparently asexual animals, and lack canonical 5mC DNA methyltransferases. Here, we characterize the kinetic properties and structural features of the catalytic domain of the N4CMT protein from the bdelloid rotifer Adineta vaga. We find that N4CMT generates high-level methylation at preferred sites, (A/C)CG(T/C/A), and low-level methylation at disfavored sites, exemplified by ACGG. Like the mammalian de novo 5mC DNA methyltransferase 3A/3B (DNMT3A/3B), N4CMT methylates CpG dinucleotides on both DNA strands, generating hemimethylated intermediates and eventually fully methylated CpG sites, particularly in the context of favored symmetric sites. In addition, like DNMT3A/3B, N4CMT methylates non-CpG sites, mainly CpA/TpG, though at a lower rate. Both N4CMT and DNMT3A/3B even prefer similar CpGflanking sequences. Structurally, the catalytic domain of N4CMT closely resembles the Caulobacter crescentus cell cycle-regulated DNA methyltransferase. The symmetric methylation of CpG, and similarity to a cell cycle-regulated DNA methyltransferase, together suggest that N4CMT might also carry out DNA synthesis-dependent methylation following DNA replication.

BACKGROUND: Monitoring fetal weight during pregnancy has a guiding role in prenatal care. OBJECTIVE: To establish a personalized fetal growth curve for effectively monitoring fetal growth during pregnancy. METHODS: (1) This study retrospectively analyzed the birth weight database of 2,474 singleton newborns delivered normally at term. The personalized fetal growth curve model was formed by combining the estimating birth weight of newborns with the proportional weight formula. (2) Multiple linear stepwise regression method was used to estimate the birth weight of newborns. RESULTS: (1) Delivery gestational age, weight at first visit, maternal height, pre-pregnancy body mass index, fetal sex, parity had significant effects on birth weight. Based on these parameters, the formula for calculating term optimal weight was obtained (R-2 = 22.8%, P < 0.001). (2) The personalized fetal growth curve was obtained according to the epidemiological factors input model of each pregnant woman. CONCLUSIONS: A model of personalized fetal growth curve can be established, and be used to evaluate fetal growth and development through estimated fetal weight monitoring.

The root-associated microbiota plays an important role in the response to environmental stress. However, the underlying mechanisms controlling the interaction between salt-stressed plants and microbiota are poorly understood. Here, by focusing on a salt-tolerant plant wild soybean (Glycine soja), we demonstrate that highly conserved microbes dominated by Pseudomonas are enriched in the root and rhizosphere microbiota of salt-stressed plant. Two corresponding Pseudomonas isolates are confirmed to enhance the salt tolerance of wild soybean. Shotgun metagenomic and metatranscriptomic sequencing reveal that motility-associated genes, mainly chemotaxis and flagellar assembly, are significantly enriched and expressed in salt-treated samples. We further find that roots of salt stressed plants secreted purines, especially xanthine, which induce motility of the Pseudomonas isolates. Moreover, exogenous application for xanthine to non-stressed plants results in Pseudomonas enrichment, reproducing the microbiota shift in salt-stressed root. Finally, Pseudomonas mutant analysis shows that the motility related gene cheW is required for chemotaxis toward xanthine and for enhancing plant salt tolerance. Our study proposes that wild soybean recruits beneficial Pseudomonas species by exudating key metabolites (i.e., purine) against salt stress.

One dimensional (1-D) micro-/nanostructures provide a good system to investigate the dependence of various properties on dimensionality and size reduction, especially in optoelectronic field. Organic conjugates including small molecules and polymers exhibit good optoelectronic properties and are apt to assemble into ordered nanostructures with well-defined shapes, tunable sizes and defect-free structures. In this review, we focus on recent progress of 1-D organic semiconductors for waveguide applications. Fabrication methods and materials of 1-D organic semiconductors are introduced. The morphology influence on the properties is also summarized.
