We recently reported that zacopride is a selective inward rectifier potassium current (IK1 ) channel agonist, suppressing ventricular arrhythmias without affecting atrial arrhythmias. The present study aimed to investigate the unique pharmacological properties of zacopride. The whole-cell patch-clamp technique was used to study IK1 currents in rat atrial myocytes and Kir2.x currents in human embryonic kidney (HEK)-293 cells transfected with inward rectifier potassium channel (Kir)2.1, Kir2.2, Kir2.3, or mutated Kir2.1 (at phosphorylation site S425L). Western immunoblots were performed to estimate the relative protein expression levels of Kir2.x in rat atria and ventricles. Results showed that zacopride did not affect the IK1 and transmembrane potential of atrial myocytes. In HEK293 cells, zacopride increased Kir2.1 homomeric channels by 40.7%±9.7% at 50 mV, but did not affect Kir2.2 and Kir2.3 homomeric channels, and Kir2.1-Kir2.2, Kir2.1-Kir2.3 and Kir2.2-Kir2.3 heteromeric channels. Western immunoblots showed that similar levels of Kir2.3 protein were expressed in rat atria and ventricles, but atrial Kir2.1 protein level was only 25% of that measured in the ventricle. In addition, 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) 3 receptor was undetectable, whereas 5-HT 4 receptor was weakly expressed in HEK293 cells. The Kir2.1-activating effect of zacopride in these cells was abolished by inhibition of protein kinase A (PKA), but not PKC or PKG. Furthermore, zacopride did not activate the mutant Kir2.1 channel in HEK293 cells but selectively activated the Kir2.1 homomeric channel via a PKA-dependent pathway, independent to that of the 5-HT receptor.

Noncovalent functionalization of graphene with iron tetrasulfophthalocyanine (FeTsPc) is achieved not only to prevent the aggregation of graphene but also form an efficient electrocatalyst for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in a dual-chamber microbial fuel cell (MFC). The electrochemical activity of the FeTsPc-functionalized graphene (FeTsPc-graphene) is evaluated towards the ORR using cyclic voltammogram (CV) and linear sweep voltammogram (LSV) methods. More positive peak potential and larger peak current of ORR are found using FeTsPc-graphene electrode as compared to FeTsPc electrode, suggesting enhanced activity of FeTsPc after adsorbing on graphene surface. The maximum power density of 817 mW m(-2) obtained from the MFC with a FeTsPc-graphene cathode is higher than that of 523 mW m(-2) with a FeTsPc cathode and is close to that of 856 mW m(-2) with a Pt/C cathode. Thus, FeTsPc-graphene nanocomposites can be a good alternative to Pt catalyst in MFCs. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Superhydrophobic flaky gamma-alumina coating was prepared on AISI 316 2B stainless steel and was field-tested near size roll at a paper machine in a paper mill for 6 weeks consisting of two running periods of machine to check the easy-to-clean property and durability, as compared to an uncoated reference stainless steel. In the end of the field test, both the superhydrophobic and the reference stainless steel were fully covered with substances from the testing environment. Major part of the collected substances on the superhydrophobic stainless steel can be washed away by pressurized water;however, the collected substances remained on the reference stainless steel after washing. The field-tested samples were characterized visually and by stereomicroscopy, field emission scanning electron microscopy, laser profilometry and contact angle tester. The field test revealed the easy-to-clean property of the superhydrophobic surface and the superhydrophobic coating survived rather well after the first running period of 16 days in the field test. The resistance and durability of the superhydrophobic surface still needs to be further improved for longer term application in paper industry. Nanoindentation was used to further study the mechanical properties of the gamma-alumina coating. It was found that the gamma-alumina coating became much softer after transforming from flat to flaky form. In addition, the flaky gamma-alumina coating demonstrated a phenomenon of time-dependent plasticity and some flexibility. (C) 2011 Elsevier B. V. All rights reserved.

The results show that the amount of Channel Black has most effect on underwater property of PU material. In one atmospheric pressure, the underwater property of PU material is worst when the amount of Channel Black is 60, while the underwater properties are not evident when the amount of channel is 30 and 45. In lower underwater pressure, effect of the amount of Channel Black on underwater property of PU material is almost difference. In higher underwater pressure, the underwater property of PU material is best when the amount of Channel Black is 45, while 30 is second, and 60 is lowest.

This paper introduced a LDA-based pseudo relevance feedback (PRF) model for cross language information retrieval. To validate the performance of PRF techniques in CLIR task, we conducted cross language query expansion experiments based on a self-constructed CLIR system, the LDA-based PRF model was applied before or after the query translating process, namely the pre-translation-PRF, the post-translation-PRF, and the combined-PRF strategy. We also compared this model with the classical VSM-based-PRF algorithm. Experiment results showed that the proposed LDA-based PRF method was effective for improving the performance of CLIR.

In this paper, 3-mercaptocarboxylic acid (MPA) modified CdTe quantum dots (QDs) were used as sensitizers, to enhance the chemiluminescence (CL) of the calcein/K3Fe(CN)(6) system. A new CL system of CdTe/calcein/K3Fe(CN)(6) was developed. The effects of reactant concentrations and the particle sizes of CdTe QDs on the CL emission were investigated in detail. The possible enhancement mechanism of the CL was also further investigated based on the photoluminescence (PL) and CL spectra. Polyphenols such as chlorogenic acid, quercetin, hyperin, catechin and kaempferol, were observed to inhibit the CL signal of the CdTe/calcein/K3Fe(CN)(6) system and determined by the proposed method. The proposed method was applied to the determination of hyperin in seed of Cuscuta chinensis Lam, and the results obtained were satisfactory. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
