This article examines whether Thomas himself is capable of responding to the challenge he poses to Averroes' noetics: to provide a theoretical justification for the proposition hic homo intelligit. We shall examine two statements which may well be in competition: on the one hand, 'the soul thinks in and of itself;on the other, 'the human being thinks'. In doing so, we reconsider the distinction between the different levels of action, the status of the human soul as the formal component in the hylomorphic make-up of the human being, the notion that actiones sunt suppositorum, and finally the significance of the soul's dependence on body.
