Medical mineralogy explores the interactions between natural minerals and living organisms such as cells, tissues, and organs and develops therapeutic and diagnostic applications in drug delivery, medical devices, and healthcare materials. Many minerals (especially clays) have been recognized for pharmacological activities and therapeutic potential. Halloysite clay (Chinese medicine name: Chishizhi), manifested as one-dimensional aluminum silicate nanotubes (halloysite nanotubes, HNTs), has gained applications in hemostasis, wound repair, gastrointestinal diseases, tissue engineering, detection and sensing, cosmetics, and daily chemicals formulations. Various biomedical applications of HNTs are derived from hollow tubular structures, high mechanical strength, good biocompatibility, bioactivity, and unique surface characteristics. This natural nanomaterial is safe, abundantly available, and may be processed with environmentally safe green chemistry methods. This review describes the structure and physicochemical properties of HNTs relative to bioactivity. We discuss surface area, porosity and surface defects, hydrophilicity, heterogeneity and charge of external and internal surfaces, as well as biosafety. The paper provides comprehensive guidance for the development of this tubule nanoclay and its advanced biomedical applications for clinical diagnosis and therapy.

Dear Editor,Hepatitis B virus(HBV)is a small,enveloped DNA virus and a member of the Hepadnaviridae family(Zhao et al.,2020).It is a major human pathogen causing chronic liver disease,leading to significant morbidity and mortality worldwide(Xia and Liang,2019).According to the World Health Organization(WHO),an estimated 296 million people live with chronic HBV infection,contributing to around 820,000 deaths annually due to complications such as liver cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC)(Easterbrook et al.,2021).

Single-mode nanolasers based on FP-WGM hybrid cavity coupling

As an idealized light source, semiconductor nanowire (NW) lasers have been extensively studied due to its potential applications in many fields such as optoelectronics, nanophononics, optical communication, signal processing, and displays. In this letter, we proposed a novel approach to realize a single-mode nanolaser by forming an Fabry-Perot whispering gallery mode (FP-WGM) hybrid nanocavity between two cross-contact CdS NWs, i.e. x and y-NW. In our method, x-NW supports the regular FP oscillation in the axis direction while the cross section of y-NW provides a ultrasmall WGM nanocavity with a higher Q-factor and mode election which confirms the specific single mode can be excited. Experimentally, single-mode lasing emission centered at 517 nm was obtained with full width at half maximum of 0.08 nm and lasing threshold of similar to 50 kW cm-2. The suggested designing skills projected a general strategy for lasing mode regulation and single-mode realization. The single-mode low-threshold lasing strategy in coupled NWs may open a new avenue for practical applications of NW lasers and further trigger other photonic devices at a visible range.

Biocascade Synthesis of L-Tyrosine Derivatives by Coupling a Thermophilic Tyrosine Phenol-Lyase and L-Lactate Oxidase

A one-pot biocascade of two enzymatic steps catalyzed by an l-lactate oxidase and a tyrosine phenol-lyase has been successfully developed in the present study. The reaction provides an efficient method for the synthesis of l-tyrosine derivatives, which exhibits readily available starting materials and excellent yields. In the first step, an in situ generation of pyruvate from readily available bio-based l-lactate catalyzed by a highly active l-lactate oxidase from Aerococcus viridans (AvLOX) was developed (using oxygen as oxidant and catalase as hydrogen peroxide removing reagent). Pyruvate thus produced underwent C-C coupling with phenol derivatives as acceptor substrate using specially designed thermophilic tyrosine phenol-lyase mutants from Symbiobacterium toebii (TTPL). Overall, this cascade avoids the high cost and easy decomposition of pyruvate and offered an efficient and environmentally friendly procedure for l-tyrosine derivatives synthesis.

Integrated aggregate turnover and soil organic carbon sequestration using rare earth oxides and 13C isotope as dual tracers

The formation, stabilization and breakdown processes of soil aggregates determine soil organic carbon (SOC) sequestration, in turn, soil aggregate dynamics are mediated by SOC changes. However, the interactions between them remain elusive. Herein, three types of 13C-labelled residues were added to two textured soils. Rare earth oxides (REOs) and 13C isotope were used as dual tracers to simultaneously track aggregate transfer pathways and SOC sequestration during a 56-day incubation period. Residue-derived CO2 followed the sequence of Vetch > Maize > Decomposed maize during the first two weeks. Residue-derived CO2 was significantly negatively correlated with the aggregate turnover time in both investigated soils (P < 0.01), indicating that aggregate turnover was a controlling factor of residue decomposition in addition to its inherent features. Generally, residue addition decreased the aggregate turnover time in the sequence of Vetch < Maize < Decomposed maize. In Red clay soil, macroaggregates attained a higher turnover rate than that of microaggregates, while a similar change pattern was not observed in Sandstone soil with residue application. Aggregates turnover occurred faster in Sandstone soil than in Red clay soil under a given residue application. The aggregate turnover time was significantly reciprocally correlated with the residue-derived C sequestration rate (P < 0.01), suggesting that aggregate turnover was the key factor in C sequestration. A C flow conceptual model was proposed, residuederived C firstly accumulated in macroaggregates in the formation process, and then relocated from macroaggregates to microaggregates with the breakdown processes at the mid-to-late stage. This study highlights the importance of aggregate turnover in SOC sequestration and demonstrates that these interactions are further affected by residue features and soil texture.

The effects of heat treatment temperature on the microstructure and impact toughness of a UNS S38815 high-Si stainless steel were investigated by means of SEM and EBSD. The microstructure composed of matrix austenite (gamma), ferrite (delta) and intermetallic chi (chi) phase precipitates. 800 degrees C heat treatment led to a eutectoid decomposition of delta phase, which fully converted into island-like chi phase particles and secondary austenite (gamma 2) grains. The gamma 2 grains can be swept away by the growth of their adjacent primary gamma grains. As the increase of the temperature, the chi phase particles coarsened at 1020 degrees C and completely dissolved at 1120 degrees C, resulting a microstructure only composed of delta and gamma. The further increase of heat treatment temperature to 1200 degrees C produced a microstructure with >40% delta phase. The orientation relationship (OR) analysis shows that chi phase particles and gamma 2 grains adopt the cube-on-cube and the Kurdjumov-Sachs (K-S) ORs respectively from their parent delta grains, resulting in a K-S OR between chi particles and gamma 2 grains. chi phase particles may also precipitate at the interfaces of delta/gamma or gamma/gamma without any specific OR with them. The impact absorption energy of samples strongly depended on the precipitation of chi phase, showing the worst toughness in the 800 degrees C heat treated sample and the best toughness in the 1120 degrees C heat treated sample (free of chi phase). The strip distribution of delta along ED direction induces anisotropy in toughness.

Data skew has an essential impact on the performance of big data processing. Spark task scheduling with data skew and deadline constraints is considered to minimize the total rental cost in this paper. A modified scheduling architecture is developed in terms of the unique characteristics of the considered problem. A mathematical model is constructed, and a Spark task scheduling algorithm is proposed considering both the data skew and deadline constraints. The algorithm consists of three components: stage sequencing, task scheduling, and scheduling adjustment. Strategies for each of the components are presented. The parameters and components of the proposed algorithm are calibrated over many random instances. The calibrated algorithm is compared to two existing algorithms for similar problems over classical scientific workflow applications. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm outperforms the compared algorithms statistically.

Mixer is of crucial importance in evaluating the precision of the frequency transfer. We present preliminary results on the optimization of the practical mixer's LO and RF input power parameters when performing downconversion. A fractional frequency instability better than 2E-13@1 s via 100 km fiber link with 100 MHz repetition frequency optical comb is measured under the optimized parameters.

As an essential active device, electrical preamplifier has significant effect on frequency stability, which is extremely demanded by a frequency transfer system. In this work, we build an optical-comb based frequency transfer system and investigate the influences of the preamplifier noise in determining the ultimate frequency instability of the system. The experimental results show that increasing the amplifier gain has no contribution to the frequency instability improvement when the amplifier noise is higher than that of the measuring device, and a frequency instability of 2E-14@1 s is achieved with the amplifier gain varying from 1 to 100. Moreover, if a frequency instability below 1E-15@1 s is to be transferred, the noise of the amplifier should be carefully calibrated and controlled, e.g., below 1E-7 V at 0 dB gain.

We experimentally demonstrate a frequency transfer over 1000 km of fiber by exploiting the optical frequency comb. Through the feedback of the phase shifter, active phase noise cancellation is achieved. The fractional frequency instability of 2.4 x 10(-15) at 1 s and 1.1 x 10(-18) at 10000 s are measured respectively. The results support ultrastable frequency transfer applications via long-haul fiber links.
