This paper offers an extensive examination of methods for estimating the State of Charge (SoC) in batteries within the context of Battery Management Systems (BMS). SoC is a crucial parameter that indicates the remaining charge in a battery during its current cycle. Accurately estimating the SoC is vital to prevent the battery from operating in unfavorable conditions, such as low charge, and to ensure its safe and efficient operation, ultimately extending its service life. This motivates the exploration and comparison of various SoC estimation methods. The Ampere-Hour Integration (Ahi) method is the simplest but lacks the ability to correct estimation errors due to its open-loop nature. The Kalman Filter (KF) method combines aspects of the first two methods, leveraging system observation errors to make timely corrections to the state estimates. It is suitable for in use estimation when accompanied by an appropriate battery model, resulting in a high estimation accuracy. This paper aims to summarize each SoC estimation method and explore potential avenues for improvement. By analyzing the limitations and challenges of the SoC estimation algorithms in practical engineering applications, it provides insights into the future development of online SoC estimation. © 2023 IEEE.

Electrospun polylactic acid nanofibers membrane with copper ion-loaded clay nanotubes for fresh-keeping packaging

The plastics derived from fossil fuels for food packaging results in serious environmental problems. Developing environment-friendly materials for food packaging is urgent and essential. In this study, polylactic acid (PLA) composite nanofibers membranes were prepared with good biocompatibility and antibacterial property. Cu2+ loaded in the natural halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) was used for the antibacterial agent. Cu2+ was loaded in the HNTs and was confirmed by the X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). PLA nanofibers with different HNTs-Cu content were continuous nanofibers with the nanoscale range. HNTs-Cu entered into the nanofiber successfully. Thermal analysis results showed composite nanofibers had good thermal stability. Composite nanofiber membranes had the good hydrophobic property. HNTs-Cu improved the mechanical property of composite nanofibers than pure PLA nanofibers. Tensile strength and elasticity modulus of composite nanofibers with 4 % HNTs-Cu content were the most outstanding. L929 cells were cultured on the nanofiber membranes for biocompatibility evaluation. Cell viability of nanofiber membranes was above the 90 %. Cell live/dead staining results showed L929 cells was seldom dead on the nanofiber membranes. PLA/HNTs-Cu nanofiber membranes exhibited excellent antibacterial effects on S. aureus and E. coli. The inhibitory rates against S. aureus and E. coli were 98.31 % and 97.80 % respectively. The fresh-keeping effects of nanofiber membranes were evaluated by the strawberry preservation. Strawberries covered by nanofiber membranes exhibited better appearance, lower weight loss and higher firmness than control, PLA and PLA/HNTs groups. It promised that PLA/HNTs-Cu composite nanofiber membranes have the significant potential application for active food packaging.

Qualitative and Quantitative Analysis of the Stability of Conductors in Riserless Mud Recovery System

Riserless Mud Recovery (RMR) technology, as an emerging and efficient drilling method, is advantageous to reduce the shallow flow hazards and the number of casings. The wave current effect is one of the reasons limiting the application of RMR technology in deep and ultra-deep water, and fewer quantitative and qualitative analyses of the effect of the current are made on the stability of conductors. This paper investigates the influence of the overturning moment generated by the continuous subsea internal wave flow and the soil resistance to the conductor. The numerical simulation software ABAQUS is used to study the effects of sea state recurrence period, seabed soil properties, conductor material, driving depth in the mud, and conductor wellhead height on the stability of the conductor, and the influence weights of the factors affecting the stability of the conductor are analyzed using the weight analysis algorithm of extreme learning machine-mean impact value (ELM-MIV). Finally, the qualitative and quantitative analyses affecting the stability of the conductor are carried out, which provide reference values for the application of the RMR technology.

Entropy stabilization is an effective method to design and explore MAX phases with outstanding properties via tuning constituent elements and crystal structures, which have received considerable critical attention. Currently, some medium-/high-entropy (ME/HE) MAX phases, whose A layers are composed of Al, S, and magnetic elements, are reported, while few discussions about M E/HEMAX phases with other A elements (e.g., Sn) are conducted. Herein, fully dense ME/HE-MAX phase bulks ((TiVNb)(2)SnC, (TiVNbZr)(2)SnC, and (TiVNbZrHf)(2)SnC) are designed and synthesized because of the chemical diversity of MAX phases. The results of Rietveld refinement of X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and high-resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy-affiliated energy-dispersive spectrometer analysis comprehensively verify the crystal structure of ME/HE-MAX phases. Both the electrical conductivity and the charge carrier mobility are significantly lower than the reported correlation ternary MAX phases, due to the electron scattering and structural defects in ME/HE-MAX phase crystal structures. Similarly, the electron contribution of thermal conductivity is gradually declining;on the contrary, the phonon plays an increasingly dominant role as temperature increases. Owing to the richness in composition of MAX phases, herein, a composition design route for discovering new MAX phases and tuning their properties is indicated.

Vanadate materials are feasible cathodes for metal-ion batteries due to their stable layered structure, abundant valence states, and high capacity. However, much uncertainty still exists about precisely modulating intercalants to facilitate ion storage. Here, V2O5 pre-intercalated with various transition metal ions M2+ (MNi, Co, Mn) are developed as model materials to analyze the coupling effect between guest ions and host material. Through density functional theory simulations, it is found that M2+ interacts with V-O chain via M 3d-O 2p covalent bonds, and extended X-ray absorption fine structure reveals the NiO interatomic distance at 1.56 angstrom shorter than CoO (1.60 angstrom) and MnO (1.72 angstrom), suggesting the M-O band type with different covalency degree can optimize VOx polyhedron and local electronic structure. Furthermore, NiVO cathode materials with the smallest layer spacing shows higher redox voltage and better rate/cycling performance for Ca2+ storage than CoVO/MnVO, elucidating that Ni has stronger tendency to attract electrons and bonds with V-O layer tightly, thus supplying a reliable ion diffusion channel for Ca2+. Through ions pre-intercalated techniques, this work highlights both layer spacing and physicochemical properties of intercalants affect electrochemical process, which is significant for developing high-performance vanadate cathode materials. Injectable, Thixotropic, and Multiresponsive Silk Fibroin Hydrogel for Localized and Synergistic Tumor Therapy

Combinational cancer therapy offers a promising strategy to overcome the limitations of single-drug treatment, including limited therapeutic efficacy, serious side effects, and low survival rate. Injectable silk fibroin (SF) hydrogel has emerged as an effective platform for localized treatment. Herein, hydrophilic SF (HSF) was extracted from regenerated SF and self-assembled into hydrogel within 2-6 h. The obtained HSF hydrogel showed obvious viscoelasticity, thixotropic behavior, and self-healing performance. Interestingly, this hydrogel also exhibited excellent stimuli-responsive drug release profiles when triggered by multiple factors (acidity, reactive oxygen species, glutathione, hyperthermia, and near-infrared (NIR)), suggesting that it could achieve spatially and temporally on-demand drug release in response to tumor microenvironment and extra-tumor NIR irradiation. Importantly, intratumoral injection of doxorubicin (DOX)/Cy7-loaded HSF-based hydrogel (DOX/Cy7-hydrogel) plus NIR irradiation exerted the best antitumor effect among all the treatment groups, revealing the strong synergistic effects of chemo/photothermal/photodynamic therapy. It is worth noting that this DOX/Cy7-hydrogel could almost eliminate the entire tumor masses, significantly prolonging the survival time of tumor-bearing mice over 60 days without detectable adverse effects. Collectively, our findings suggest that this injectable DOX/Cy7-hydrogel with thixotropic and multistimuli responsive properties could be developed as a promising platform for localized and synergistic treatment of cancer.

Biodegradation of pyrene by a novel strain of Castellaniella sp. under denitrifying condition

Pyrene, a four-ring PAHs, is a typical pollutant in coking wastewater, which is difficult to biodegrade in the conventional biological wastewater treatment processes. Biodegradation of pyrene coupled with denitrification process is an effective approach for treating coking wastewater due to simultaneous removal of toxic organic pollutants and nitrate. In this study, a novel strain capable of degrading pyrene was isolated from the activated sludge of a local coking wastewater treatment plant and identified to be Casterllaniella sp. based on 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis. It can degrade pyrene under denitrifying condition. The degradation efficiency of pyrene reached 97.2% when pyrene concentration was 100 mg L-1. According to the analysis of electron transformation process, about 50% of pyrene was degraded using nitrate as electron acceptor. During pyrene degradation process, almost no intermediate products were detected by GC-MS with the detection limit of 0.1 ng L-1 perhaps due to the complete degradation of pyrene. The SDS-PAGE analysis showed that the proportion of 6 proteins increased during pyrene degradation, and 4 proteins could be considered as enzymes involved in pyrene degradation. The analysis of intermediate products and proteins suggested that pyrene degradation under anoxic condition by Castellaniella sp. Pyr2 was different from other aerobic pathways. Furthermore, this strain has potential for the practical application of simultaneous removal of pyrene and nitrate from coking wastewater.

A Faraday laser operating on Cs 852 nm transition

We demonstrate a Faraday laser at Cs-D2 resonance line 852 nm using a Cs Faraday optical filter as frequency-selecting element. In contrast to typical diode laser with high stability of the emission frequency by additional control systems, our Faraday laser offers stable output frequency exactly set by the peak transmission frequency of the Cs 852 nm Faraday optical filter. The system works stably over a range of laser diode (LD) current from 60 to 130 mA and the LD temperature from 14 to 35 degrees C, as well as the 48-h wavelength fluctuation range of no more than +/- 2 p.m. A most probable linewidth of 17 kHz with Lorentz fitting is obtained by beating between two identical laser systems. The wavelength of our system is stabilized within transmission frequency region of 852 nm Faraday optical filter, and the peak of the transmission is corresponding to Cs atomic Doppler broadened line at the cell temperature of 41 degrees C and the magnetic field of 330 G, making it suitable for laser-pumped Cs gas-cell and atomic beam frequency standard, etc. Moreover, this scheme is firstly used on Cs atom, opening new doors in research of Faraday laser and its applications.

Identification, expression, and artificial selection of silkworm epigenetic modification enzymes

Background Understanding the genetic basis of phenotype variations during domestication and breeding is of great interest. Epigenetics and epigenetic modification enzymes (EMEs) may play a role in phenotypic variations;however, no comprehensive study has been performed to date. Domesticated silkworm (Bombyx mori) may be utilized as a model in determining how EMEs influence domestication traits. Results We identified 44 EMEs in the genome of silkworm (Bombyx mori) using homology searching. Phylogenetic analysis showed that genes in a subfamily among different animals were well clustered, and the expression pattern of EMEs is constant among Bombyx mori, Drosophila melanogaster, and Mus musculus. These are most highly expressed in brain, early embryo, and internal genitalia. By gene-related selective sweeping, we identified five BmEMEs under artificial selection during the domestication and breeding of silkworm. Among these selected genes, BmSuv4-20 and BmDNMT2 harbor selective mutations in their upstream regions that alter transcription factor-binding sites. Furthermore, these two genes are expressed higher in the testis and ovary of domesticated silkworm compared to wild silkworms, and correlations between their expression pattern and meiosis of the sperm and ova were observed. Conclusions The domestication of silkworm has induced artificial selection on epigenetic modification markers that may have led to phenotypic changes during domestication. We present a novel perspective to understand the genetic basis underlying animal domestication and breeding.

Model for the Whole Roller Leveling Process of Plates with Random Curvature Distribution Based on the Curvature Integration Method

A model based on the curvature integration method has been applied in an online plate leveling system. However, there are some shortcomings in the current leveling models. On the one hand, the models cannot deal with the leveling process of plates with a random curvature distribution. On the other hand, the current models are suitable only for stable leveling processes and ignore the biting in and tailing out stages. This study presents a new plate-leveling model based on the curvature integration method, which can describe the leveling process of plates with random curvature distribution. Further, the model is solved in two cases in order to take the biting in and tailing out stages into consideration. The proposed model is evaluated by comparing with a plate leveling experiment. Finally, the leveling process of a plate with a wave bent is studied using the proposed model. It is found that the contact angles vary greatly during the biting in and tailing out stages. However, they are relatively steady during the 5 roller leveling stage. In addition, the contact angle of roller No. 2 is the smallest, which is close to 0. Roller leveling can effectively eliminate bending in the plate, but there are regions in the head and tail of the plate, where roller leveling is not effective. The non-leveling region length is about 2 times that of the roller space. This study proposes a quasi-static plate-leveling model, which makes it possible to analyze the dynamic straightening process using a curvature integration method. It also makes it possible to analyze the straightening process of a plate with random curvature distribution.
