A water-soluble polysaccharide, FCAP1, was isolated from an alkaline extract from the fruits of Cornus officinalis. Its molecular weight was 34.5 kDa. Monosaccharide composition analysis revealed that it was composed of fucose, arabinose, xylose, mannose, glucose, and galactose in a molar ratio of 0.29:0.19:1.74:1:3.30:1.10. On the basis of partial acid hydrolysis and methylation analysis, FCAP1 was shown to be a highly branched polysaccharide with a backbone of beta-(1 -> 4)-linked-glucose partially substituted at the O-6 position with xylopyranose residues. The branches were composed of (1 -> 3)-linked-Ara, (1 -> 4)-linked-Man, (1 -> 4,6)-linked-Man, (1 -> 4)-linked-Glc, and (1 -> 2)-linked-Gal. Arabinose. fucose, and galactose were located at the terminal of the branches. The structure was further elucidated by a specific enzymatic degradation with an endo-beta-(1 -> 4)-glucanase and MALDI-TOF-MS analysis. This paper makes an attempt to address the scaling problem of Leaf Area Index (LAI) and to analyze the propagation of scaling effect of LAI. On the basis of the Taylor series expansion and following the general scaling procedure, it is demonstrated that the magnitude of the scaling effect is the product of the degree of the non-linearity of the retrieval model and the spatial heterogeneity of input variables involved in this model. Finally, a scaling correction model is proposed to correct for the scaling effect of LAI. The validation using the simulated data indicates that the proposed scaling correction model of LAI gives promising accuracy if the spatial heterogeneity is well characterized by its wavelet variance. The RMSE and relative error of retrieved LAI induced by the scale effect can be greatly reduced after scaling correction. The scaling propagation analysis of LAI reveals that the scaling effects caused by several non-linear components may compensate for each other, which would enhance our confidence in using LAI product over heterogeneity areas.

The improved Tosi-Fumi pair potential has been employed to simulate the melting behavior and Gruneisen parameters of sodium chloride (NaCl) using molecular dynamics (MD) method at constant volume. The melting curve of NaCl is compared with the experimental data and other calculations in a pressure range from 0 to 144 GPa. The simulated results validate the amount of 20% superheating of the NaCl solid and yield an approximate power law dependence of the Gruneisen parameter (gamma) on compression gamma = gamma(0)(V/V-0)(q), with q approximate to 1.078, in the temperature range from 298 to 1073 K and pressure range from 0 to 60 GPa.

Objective: Depression is a common mood disorder affecting stroke patients. It is associated with poorer outcome and increased mortality in stroke patients. The aim of this work was to test whether serum levels of proinflammatory cytokines are correlated with the development of depression after stroke. Methods: One hundred ischemic stroke patients admitted to the hospital within the first 24 hours after stroke onset were consecutively recruited and followed up for 6 months. The 17-item Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HDRS) and Montgomery-Asberg Depression Rating Scale (MADRS) were used to screen for depressive symptoms on days 3, 7 and 14 after admission and at 6 months after stroke onset. Based on the symptoms elicited from these two scales, diagnoses of depression were made in accordance with DSM-IV criteria for post-stroke depression. Serum levels of proinflammatory cytokines (IL-6, IL-18 and TNF-alpha) of all the patients were determined by ELISA on both days 1 and 7 after admission. Meanwhile, 50 healthy control subjects were also recruited;they underwent measurement of serum levels of proinflammatory cytokines once. Results: Thirty-seven patients (37.0%) were diagnosed as having major depression at 2 weeks. Serum IL-18 on both days 1 and 7 was significantly higher in both post-stroke depression patients and non-post-stroke depression patients than in normal controls. Serum IL-18 on day 7 was significantly higher in post-stroke depression patients than in non-post-stroke depression patients. Serum IL-18>377.84 pg/ml on day 7 was independently associated with incident post-stroke depression at the acute stage of stroke (odds ratio: 12.280, 95% confidence interval: 3.848-39.190, p<0.001 after adjustment). At 6 months, 31 patients (33.0%) were diagnosed with major depression. Serum IL-18 >376.67 pg/ml on day 7 was independently associated with post-stroke depression at 6 months (odds ratio: 7.431, 95% confidence interval: 1.741-31.712, p=0.007 after adjustment).

Modeling time headways between vehicles has attracted increasing interest in the traffic flow research field recently, because the corresponding statistics help to reveal the intrinsic interactions governing the vehicle dynamics. However, most previous micro-simulation models cannot yield the observed log-normal distributed headways. This paper designs a new car-following model inspired by the Galton board to reproduce the observed time-headway distributions as well as the complex traffic phenomena. The consistency between the empirical data and the simulation results indicates that this new car-following model provides a reasonable description of the car-following behaviours.

In general, the tensile strengths of the solid-recycled Mg alloys are increased by T6 treatment after extrusion. For Mg alloy with high rare earth (RE) content, it is difficult to obtain the desired higher tensile strength compared with those extruded ones from the original ingots. In this paper, according to some characteristic of Mg-RE alloys, effect of heat treatment and extrusion temperature on the properties of the recycled Mg-10Gd-2Y-0.5Zr was studied. The results show that the aging response in the recycled specimens is similar to that in as-extruded reference samples. The deformation temperature is increased in order to inhibit Mg-24(Gd,Y)(5) particles precipitation and realize interfacial bonding between chips. After peak-aged treatment at 225 degrees C, the GW102K alloy consolidated at 450 degrees C exhibits excellent tensile strength. It is feasible to obtain the desired tensile properties of the recycled alloys by simultaneously promoting the precipitation of the metastable RE-containing phases and retaining the work-hardening effect during heat treatment. We constructed three different fibroin H-chain expression systems to estimate the efficacy of producing recombinant proteins in the cocoon of transgenic silkworms. The results showed that the three different EGFP/H-chain fusion genes were all expressed selectively in the posterior silk gland of the transgenic silkworm. The recombinant protein content of transgenic silkworm cocoons is up to 15% (w/w) when using the most highly efficient H-chain expression system. To our knowledge, in comparison with silkworm silk gland expression systems in the literature, the highly efficient expression system developed in this study is the most efficient silkworm silk gland expression system to date. This expression system is the best candidate for foreign gene production and for creation of novel functional silk material. The results suggested the N-terminal domain and the intron of the H-chain gene are important in the secretion of fibroin and its transcription, respectively.

We tested for differences in gray matter volume between ApoE epsilon 4 allele noncarriers (n = 25) and ApoE 1:4 allele carriers (n = 12) in RLOD patients Results. The volumes of right medial frontal gyrus, left middle frontal gyrus and left inferior occipital gyrus were significantly smaller in RLOD patients with ApoE 1:4 allele carriers as compared to ApoE epsilon 4 allele noncarners There was a significant positive correlation between gray matter volume of right medial frontal gyrus and Digit Span Test score in RLOD patients with ApoE epsilon 4 allele carriers. Limitations This study is cross-sectional. therefore it cannot determine whether abnormal gray matter volume is a state marker or trait market of RLOD with ApoE epsilon 4 allele carriers Conclusion Our findings support the hypothesis that the ApoE genotype might be associated with structural changes in RLOD. Early life stress is a potential precursor of eventual neuropsychiatric diseases and may result in altered neurodevelopment and function of the hippocampus, which thus provides a site at which potential interventions to modify the effects of early life stress may act. In this study, Sprague Dawley rat pups comprising male and female animals underwent maternal separation (MS) for 180 min from postnatal days (PND) 2 to 14, or were left with their dams. They subsequently received daily administration of saline (0.9%), escitalopram (10 mg/kg), or no treatment during adolescence (PND 43-60). All adult animals underwent brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and bilateral hippocampal proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (H-1-MRS). Neither MS nor escitalopram treatment had a significant effect on hippocampal volume. Adult rats that experienced MS displayed significantly increased choline-containing compounds (Cho) and decreased N-acetylaspartate (NAA), glutamate (Glu) and Myo-inositol (MI) relative to the stable neurometabolite creatine (Cr) in hippocampus. Administration of escitalopram during adolescence could modify the alterations of NAA/Cr, Glu/Cr and MI/Cr. The effects of MS on hippocampal neurochemistry were most significant in the right hippocampus. These results indicate that MS in rats has long-term consequences on hippocampal neurochemistry reflective of neural density/functional integrity, especially on the right hippocampus, and adolescent administration with escitalopram can at least partially ameliorate these neurochemical alterations. Furthermore, these metabolite changes seem to be more sensitive indicators of the results from early life stress than volume changes. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. and ECNP. All rights reserved

A new and efficient dynamic kinetic resolution (DKR) process of secondary aromatic alcohols was developed with acid resins as racemization catalysts. Acid resin CD8604 was shown to have excellent racemization activity and good biocompatibility. When employing CD8604 and complex acyl donors as racemization catalyst and acyl donor, respectively, enantiomerically pure aromatic acetate was obtained with excellent yield and ee values through the DKR process. It is noteworthy that the system could be reused more than 10 times with little loss of yield and ee value. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
