Enhanced Electrochemical Performance and Membrane Stability of a Hybrid Alkali-Acid Urea Electrolyzer

Bipolar membrane (BPM)-based hybrid acid/alkali electrolyzers represent a notable advancement in the efficient production of hydrogen. However, the degradation behaviors of BPMs within hybrid systems are not well understood. This study introduces the urea oxidation reaction (UOR) as an alternative to the sluggish oxygen evolution reaction at the anode and utilizes X-ray computed tomography to assess the degradation of BPMs. Contrary to the conventional belief that the anion exchange layer is less stable in alkaline environments, it has been discovered that the BPM experiences significant corrosion on the cation exchange layer in hybrid electrolyzers. Using UOR as the anodic reaction not only significantly reduces the overall voltage by similar to 300 mV but also effectively mitigates membrane corrosion. These insights into the degradation of BPMs are crucial to the development of more efficient and durable hybrid electrolyzers for hydrogen production.

Synthesis and properties of novel colorless polyimide containing indene and amide groups

Two novel diamines 1-(4-aminophenyl)-1,3,3-trimethyl-2,3-dihydro-1H-indene-5-amine and 4-amino-N-(4-(5-(4-aminobenzamide)-1,3,3-trimethyl-2,3-dihydro-1H-inden-1-yl) phenyl) benzamide containing indene and amide groups were successfully designed and synthesized, and a series of colorless polyimides (CPIs) derived from the two diamines with 1,2,4,5-cyclohexanetetracarboxylic dianhydride in various ratios were copolymerized. The introduction of aliphatic ring structures was conducive to the improvement of optical properties, while the incorporation of amide groups improved thermal and mechanical properties. These CPI films exhibited excellent optical properties (T-400 > 80%), high heat resistance (T-g > 300 degrees C) and mechanical properties with the synergistic action of the two groups. Furthermore, the effect of the content of amide groups on the intermolecular interaction of CPIs was systematically analyzed. This study provides a fancy method for the development of heat-resistant colorless materials for optical applications.

A double neural network model predictive control method for series elastic actuator's motor thermal protection

Traditional motor protection methods are conservative, neglecting actual thermal conditions and underutilizing the motor's performance. This paper proposes a novel double neural network model predictive control (DNMPC)-based protection method to maximize motor performance. First, we analyze the system's thermal properties and propose a thermal lemma to demonstrate that solving the protection problem involves determining the maximum allowable control input boundary. Second, instead of directly measuring the motor temperature, the neural network (NN) method is proposed to establish the system's thermal model for estimating the motor temperatures. Third, leveraging the NN model, we propose a model predictive control strategy designed to determine the maximum allowable control input boundaries, which we refer to as the neural network model predictive control (NMPC) method. Consequently, this approach has led to the development of an advanced motor protection system. To further reduce the computational burden, we incorporate an additional NN to directly approximate the NMPC controller, thereby forming our proposed DNMPC approach. Finally, comparative experimental validation demonstrates the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed method. The results indicate that the NN model is highly accurate, eliminating the need for direct temperature measurements and enabling the prediction of future motor temperatures. Additionally, the DNMPC-based protection method significantly improves the joint's peak torque output by 64.3 % compared to conservative continuous current limited protection methods. The computational efficiency is also notable, with the NMPC achieving a runtime of approximately 20 ms, while the DNMPC achieves only 0.2 ms.

Digital twin technology has emerged as a promising solution for the digital transformation of transportation infrastructure. This paper presents a comprehensive review of digital twin technology in the transportation industry, analyzing its relationship with key enabling technologies. By examining the development of digital twins across various transportation domains, we summarize the connotation, characteristics, and development trends of digital twins in transportation infrastructure. We propose a conceptual model and a digital system architecture for transportation infrastructure, along with a set of engineering application technical guidelines. Our findings reveal that current digital twin technology still faces challenges in driving the digital transformation of the transportation industry. From a theoretical perspective, the granularity of digital twin models is insufficient, lacking systematic support. In terms of application, the reconstruction of full-cycle digital processes primarily focuses on low-level applications. Future research should focus on theory innovation, data fusion, model integration, and professional applications to promote the development of digital twin technology in transportation infrastructure. Additionally, emphasis should be placed on collaborative design across disciplines and data standardization to build intelligent full-lifecycle management platforms, improve operation and maintenance efficiency, and provide new ideas and methods for sustainable development.

Analysis of preoperative ocular optical parameters in patients with cataract

This study aims to evaluate the distribution of preoperative corneal parameters obtained using the Pentacam anterior segment analyzer in Chinese male and female patients with cataracts and to investigate the correlation between these parameters and related factors. Preoperative examination data of the eyes of 1,255 patients who underwent cataract surgery were retrospectively analyzed. The Pentacam AXL was used to extract preoperative corneal measurements, and the total corneal measurement data were analyzed. The average age of the patients was 52.9 +/- 21.3 years. The mean simulated keratometry values and corneal curvature of total corneal refractive power were positively correlated with age (both P < 0.01). Spearman's correlation analysis revealed a positive association between age and anterior corneal spherical aberration, posterior corneal spherical aberration, and total corneal spherical aberration changes. A negative correlation was found between age and with-the-rule astigmatism, and it was positively correlated with the ratios of against-the-rule and oblique astigmatism. A significant between-eye correlation was observed regarding spherical aberration (Z40), horizontal coma (Z31), vertical coma (Z3-1), and horizontal trefoil (Z33). The corneal curvature in females was significantly steeper than that in males (P < 0.01). Corneal curvature, corneal spherical aberration, and corneal astigmatism were found to change with age. Additionally, we found physiological differences between the sexes. Individual measurements could be taken preoperatively to facilitate the development of personalized surgical plans. By identifying age- and gender-related corneal variations, this study enables more personalized cataract surgery planning, potentially improving refractive outcomes and reducing postoperative complications through tailored surgical techniques and intraocular lens selection.

Recent Development and Challenges of Bipolar Membranes for High Performance Water Electrolysis

Bipolar membranes (BPMs) are a class of special ion exchange membranes consisting of a cation-exchange layer (CEL) and an anion-exchange layer (AEL). BPMs can selectively transport both cations (e.g., H+) and anions (e.g., OH-) simultaneously, enabling hydrogen production in acids and oxygen evolution in alkalis. The unique properties of BPMs enable promising applications in water electrolysis (WE) and have, therefore, attracted a lack of research attention in recent years. In this review, critical challenges for their potential applications in WE systems are highlighted, including chemical/mechanical stability, ionic conductivity, ion exchange capacity, water dissociation, transport efficiency, etc. Drawing upon recent research findings, a number of promising strategies have been identified for enhancing the performance of BPMWE systems. These include the optimization of AEL and CEL polymer chemistry, the construction of asymmetric membrane structures, the incorporation of water dissociation (WD) catalysts, and the design of 2D/3D structures at the bipolar junction as well as advanced fabrication techniques. In summary, this review offers valuable insights for advancing the development and practical implementation of BPM technology in WE systems and other energy-related domains.

Debus-Radziszewski Reaction Inspired In Situ "One-Pot" Approach to Construct Luminescent Zirconium-Organic Frameworks

Metal-organic frameworks have received extensive development in the past three decades, which are generally constructed via the reaction between inorganic building units and commercially available or presynthesized organic linkers. However, the presynthesis of organic linkers is usually time-consuming and unsustainable due to multiple-step separation and purification. Therefore, methodology development of a new strategy is fundamentally important for the construction and further exploration of the applications of MOFs. Herein, we report an in situ "one-pot" strategy inspired by the Debus-Radziszewski reaction, in which the generation of organic linkers from three kinds of simple and commercially available precursors and sequential construction of MOFs are integrated into one solvothermal condition. Based on this method, two zirconium-tetracarboxylate frameworks (HIAM-4028-op and HIAM-4029-op) were successfully prepared, which exhibit bright blue and near-infrared emissions, respectively. Due to the coordinatively unsaturated metal sites and the low symmetry of HIAM-4028-op, the coordination modes in the single crystal can transfer from the pristine 8-connected Zr6 cluster to 8- and 9-connected and to 9- and 12-connected Zr6 cluster coexisting structures via secondary linker installation. To the best of our knowledge, the present work is the first time to construct MOFs using a Debus-Radziszewski reaction-inspired in situ "one-pot" strategy, which opens a new way to design and construct MOFs with specific properties and structures.

Priority protected areas for mangrove conservation in coastal Guangdong, China: Addressing climate and land cover changes

Mangroves are critical for mitigating climate change, yet face challenges from climate change and land cover alterations. Identifying priority protected areas (PPAs) for mangroves and predicting their responses to climate and land cover changes is critical for mangroves to cope with future challenges. Recent studies have attempted to identify PPAs for mangroves, but most rely on current and/or historical data, and focus on examining individual drivers (climate or land cover change), overlooking a forward-looking assessment of their combined effects. Building on a novel framework integrating MaxEnt and InVEST, this study identifies mangrove PPAs influenced by climate and land cover changes and explores their spatial-temporal variations from 2020 to 2050 through land cover dynamic prediction under three shared socioeconomic pathway (SSP) scenarios (SSP126: low-emission scenario;SSP245: mid-emission scenario;SSP585: high-emission scenario). An empirical analysis is conducted in Guangdong, China. From 2020 to 2050, mangrove PPAs exhibit distinct trends under diverse scenarios, influenced by climate and land cover changes. Under the SSP126 scenario, PPAs are expected to expand and become less fragmented;while they will contract and become more fragmented under the SSP245 scenario and especially the SSP585 scenarios. Moreover, the consistency between existing marine protected areas (MPAs) and mangrove PPAs is rather low. The effectiveness of existing MPAs demonstrates a slight improvement under the SSP126 scenario, but weaken their effectiveness under the SSP245 and SSP585 scenarios. Proposals to conserve mangroves by enhancing the existing MPA system are presented to address challenges brought by climate and land cover changes.

Perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) pollution with their toxicity, carcinogenicity, and persistence has been concerned worldwide. Research into novel materials for detecting and removing PFASs has increased rapidly, particularly in regard to the emergence of well-characterized single-atom materials (SAMs). Owing to the high selectivity, high atom utilization, and abundant active sites of SAMs, these materials exhibit remarkable efficacy in the detection and removal of PFASs. In this work, recent advances in the synthesis of SAMs for the detection and removal PFASs are reviewed. In-depth discussions of the structure-activity relationship and reaction mechanisms have demonstrated the high efficiency, activity, and selectivity of SAMs for the detection, adsorption, and degradation of PFASs. To optimize the application of SAMs in PFASs remediation, this review comprehensively surveys SAMs applications for PFASs and analyzes potential design strategies based on synthesis methods and corresponding properties. Synthesis strategies such as wet-chemistry, which offer ease of operation and high potential for large-scale production, are recommended for the further exploration of specific SAMs for the detection and removal of PFASs. Finally, this review identifies the challenges and opportunities for development of SAMs for the detection and remediation of PFASs, providing an outlook on strategic goals for a green economy and sustainable development. Carbothermal Shock Synthesis of Lattice Oxygen-Mediated High-Entropy FeCoNiCuMo-O Electrocatalyst with a Fast Kinetic, High Efficiency, and Stable Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Efficient oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts with fast kinetics, high efficiency, and stability are essential for scalable green production of hydrogen. The rational design and fabrication of catalysts play a decisive role in their catalytic behavior. This work presents a high-entropy catalyst, FeCoNiCuMo-O, synthesized via carbothermal shock. Synergistic optimization of the adsorption evolution mechanism (AEM) and lattice oxygen mechanism (LOM) was realized and demonstrated through the combination of in situ spectra/mass spectrometry and chemical probe analysis in FeCoNiCuMo-O. Furthermore, the robust stability is reinforced by the inherent properties conferred by the high-entropy design. The catalyst exhibits outstanding performance metrics, featuring an exceptionally low Tafel slope of 41 mV dec-1, a low overpotential of 272 mV at 10 mA cm-2, and a commendable endurance (a mere 2.2% voltage decline after a 240-h continuous chronopotentiometry test at 10 mA cm-2). This study advances the development of efficient, durable OER electrocatalysts for sustainable hydrogen production.
