With the development of urban underground spaces, ensuring the safety of operational subway tunnels poses significant challenges. Among these challenges, tunnel structural deformation and foreign object detection are crucial components of safety protection. Visual measurement offers specific advantages such as non-contact operation, all-weather functionality, high precision, and real-time dynamics. This paper proposes a method based on computer vision for detecting structural deformation and foreign objects in operational subway tunnels. Firstly, current tunnel morphology data is obtained through monitoring cameras. Then, digital image processing techniques such as image denoising, feature segmentation, sub-pixel positioning, filtering, and displacement calculation are applied. By comparing the processed sequential data, deformation data such as subsidence changes and horizontal changes are obtained, and the presence of foreign objects is determined. Experimental results indicate that the proposed method can simultaneously identify tunnel structural deformation and foreign object intrusion. This addresses the limitations of existing technologies, which have singular monitoring functions and incomplete tunnel health assessment systems, thereby ensuring the safety of subway operations. © 2025 SPIE.

Predicting the life cycle durability and ecological performance of cementitious coatings with a fuzzy-stochastics-based approach

Cementitious coating effectively prevents chloride-induced corrosion in offshore reinforced concrete (RC) structures. Strain hardening cementitious composites (SHCC) is a class of advanced cementitious composites with superior ductility and durability. Due to the lack of long-term test data, the current probability-based design guidelines may not be applicable to SHCC coating. This paper develops a fuzzy-stochastic-based approach to assess the durability performance of coatings using cement mortar and engineered cementitious composites (ECC), a specific type of SHCC. The age factor and the mean of chloride diffusion coefficient are modeled as fuzzy variables, and the chloride diffusion coefficient follows Gaussian distribution. Based on limited test data and subjective opinion, membership functions are proposed for the mean of initial chloride diffusion coefficient and the age factor of cement and ECC. To achieve equivalent durability performance of cement mortar coating, the amount of uncracked and cracked ECC coating are estimated to be around 33% and 25%, respectively. Based on equivalent durability performance, life cycle assessment (LCA) is conducted to compare the ecological performance of the two coatings. A case study, based on a 25-m-long simply supported box girder in shenzhen Bay, is given to elaborate the proposed approach and the evaluation results of durability performance and ecological impacts.

A 1,4,2-diazasilole containing a low-valent silicon atom has been synthesized employing a bulky imino N-heterocyclic carbene ligand. This molecular structure is characterized by a mesoionic C2N2Si five-membered ring, notable for its delocalized pi electrons, intrinsic charge-separated zwitterionic properties, and a distinctly nucleophilic silicon center, culminating in 6 pi aromaticity. This compound manifests either mesoionic silylene or silylone characteristics upon coordination with transition metals. Demonstrating extraordinary versatility, this compound engages in diverse reactions such as coordination with iron or iridium, oxidation by S8, intramolecular ring saturation under the coordination influence of iridium, silicon atom transfer facilitated by Ph2Se2, ring contraction induced by Ph2Te2, and skeletal rearrangement triggered by Et3N center dot HCl. These reactions culminate in the formation of a variety of unprecedented silicon-based heterocycles, which are typically formidable to achieve using conventional methods. This study unveils previously unexplored facets of low-valent 1,4,2-diazasilole, positioning it as a promising foundational building block for future innovations in unique silicon compounds.

In this paper, low thickness liquid crystal (LC) microstrip line phase shifter based on slow wave structure is studied. Firstly, microstrip line loaded with different slow wave structures are simulated, and their slow wave properties are analyzed by introducing slow wave factor. A liquid crystal microstrip line phase shifter with U-shaped slot ground is proposed and its equivalent circuit model is constructed. The results of high frequency electromagnetic simulation and circuit simulation are in good agreement, thus verifying the correctness and effectiveness of the equivalent circuit model.

Scheduling single-arm multi-cluster tools connected by one-space buffer modules beyond the schedulability assumption

Multi-cluster tools are increasingly being adopted for wafer production in semiconductor fabrications. The current paper deals with single-armed linear multi-cluster tools connected by one-space buffer modules with residency time constraints. Due to the complexity of operations, previous research has primarily focused on scenarios with the schedulability assumption-where there is always a wafer in processing at each step-using the backward strategy or its extensions for single-arm tools. However, it is open and more challenging to schedule such tools under general conditions beyond the schedulability assumption. The current paper deals with these general conditions. Furthermore, an innovative K-unit cyclic scheduling approach is applied to achieve higher productivity. Based on detailed analysis of the operations in these tools, a mixed integer linear programming model is formulated. Both illustrative examples and randomly generated instances are used to test and validate the proposed model. The results demonstrate that the proposed approach is valid and effective. Additionally, the K-unit cyclic schedules significantly improve productivity, which is of great importance for a company's profitability.

Integral Reinforcement Learning-Based Dynamic Event-Triggered Nonzero-Sum Games of USVs

In this article, an integral reinforcement learning (IRL) method is developed for dynamic event-triggered nonzero-sum (NZS) games to achieve the Nash equilibrium of unmanned surface vehicles (USVs) with state and input constraints. Initially, a mapping function is designed to map the state and control of the USV into a safe environment. Subsequently, IRL-based coupled Hamilton-Jacobi equations, which avoid dependence on system dynamics, are derived to solve the Nash equilibrium. To conserve computational resources and reduce network transmission burdens, a static event-triggered control is initially designed, followed by the development of a more flexible dynamic form. Finally, a critic neural network is designed for each player to approximate its value function and control policy. Rigorous proofs are provided for the uniform ultimate boundedness of the state and the weight estimation errors. The effectiveness of the present method is demonstrated through simulation experiments.

Oriented Antibody-Assembled Metal-Organic Frameworks for Persistent Wearable Sweat Cortisol Detection

The level of cortisol can reflect people's psychological stress, help diagnose adrenal gland diseases, and is also related to several mental diseases. In this study, we developed a cortisol monoclonal antibody-oriented approach to modify an immunosensor for wearable label-free and persistent sweat cortisol detection. On such an antibody-oriented immunosensor, the fragment crystallizable (Fc) region is partially inserted within the metal-organic framework (MOF), and antibody-binding regions of the cortisol monoclonal antibody (C-mab) were exposed on the MOF surface via selective growth and self-assembly. Such ordered and oriented embedding of antibodies in the MOF resulted in excellent antibody activity and improved stability and antigen-binding capacity. We also engineered the full integrated system for on-body sweat cortisol biosensing performance in several volunteers, and the results indicated that this wearable sensor is suitable for practical cortisol detection with a good linear detection range from 1 pg/mL to 1 mu g/mL with a lower limit of detection of 0.26 pg/mL. Moreover, the wearable sensor demonstrated good persistence in detecting cortisol, with only 4.1% decay after 9 days of storage. The present work represents a simple oriented antibody assembling approach to improve the stability of antibodies, providing an important step toward long-term continuous sweat biomarker detection.

Characterization of a thermostable cellobiose dehydrogenase from Myceliophthora thermophila and its function of electron-donating for lytic polysaccharide monooxygenase

Cellobiose dehydrogenase (CDH) catalyzes the oxidation of cello-oligosaccharides and transfers electrons to oxygen or other electron receptors, such as lytic polysaccharide oxygenases (LPMOs). Cellobiose dehydrogenase has the potential to be used as an electron donor for LPMOs. Therefore, it is important to obtain CDHs under reaction conditions that are compatible with those of cellulases and LPMOs. Here, a CDH gene from Myceliophthora thermophila (MtCDH-A) was constitutively expressed in Trichoderma reesei, and its ability to donate electrons to the LPMO was validated. MtCDH-A has an optimal pH of 6.0 and maintains relatively high activity over a wide pH range. The optimal temperature was 60 degrees C, and it remained stable at 50 degrees C for a long time. These enzymatic properties were compatible with the catalytic conditions of fungal LPMOs and cellulases. When MtCDH-A was used as an electron donor, the synergistic effect of LPMO and cellulase improved the degradation efficiency of phosphoric acid-swollen cellulose by 141%. This work provides a novel insight into finding a stable electron donor for LPMOs and a new direction for finding more efficient thermostable CDHs in newly identified fungal species. Fusion of forehead EEG with machine vision for real-time fatigue detection in an automatic processing pipeline

Driving fatigue is a leading contributor to traffic accidents and fatalities. For automatic detection of fatigue, multimodal data fusion is a potential key technique, especially the merging of electroencephalogram (EEG) and eye movement. Although EEG can produce objective measures of fatigue with very high temporal resolution, an unfriendly multichannel system limits its practical application while portable wearables and machine vision receive much attention since they are pervasive and user friendly. Hence, this study aims to construct a novel pipeline by using machine vision technique to improve the quality of driver fatigue detection based on forehead EEG. By coupling the Karolinska Sleepiness Scale (KSS) and percentage of eyelid closure (PERCLOS), the precise and reliable dataset for reflecting drivers' fatigue levels were obtained. Moreover, major artifact contamination related to blink activity for frontal-channel EEG was removed by a synchronous video-based eyeblink event marker. In addition, the scale-invariant feature transform (SIFT) features of eyelid keypoints was applied to fuse with the EEG-driven features. Sixteen subjects participated in a realistic driving simulation experiment. Both machine and deep learning methods were used to implement the intra-subject and inter-subject cross validation. It demonstrated that our proposed method can achieve a significant performance. The present work showed the usefulness of forehead EEG and eye images that was originally merged for detecting fatigue. It provides a new strategy of using forehead EEG combined with machine vision to design a potential and automatic pipeline for driver fatigue detection.

Most of the state-of-the-art thermoelectric materials are inorganic semiconductors. Owing to the directional covalent bonding, they usually show limited plasticity at room temperature(1,2), for example, with a tensile strain of less than five per cent. Here we discover that single-crystalline Mg3Bi2 shows a room-temperature tensile strain of up to 100 per cent when the tension is applied along the (0001) plane (that is, the ab plane). Such a value is at least one order of magnitude higher than that of traditional thermoelectric materials and outperforms many metals that crystallize in a similar structure. Experimentally, slip bands and dislocations are identified in the deformed Mg3Bi2, indicating the gliding of dislocations as the microscopic mechanism of plastic deformation. Analysis of chemical bonding reveals multiple planes with low slipping barrier energy, suggesting the existence of several slip systems in Mg3Bi2. In addition, continuous dynamic bonding during the slipping process prevents the cleavage of the atomic plane, thus sustaining a large plastic deformation. Importantly, the tellurium-doped single-crystalline Mg3Bi2 shows a power factor of about 55 microwatts per centimetre per kelvin squared and a figure of merit of about 0.65 at room temperature along the ab plane, which outperforms the existing ductile thermoelectric materials(3,4).
