Development and validation of a prediction model for gestational diabetes mellitus risk among women from 8 to 14 weeks of gestation in Western China

Objectives To develop a clinically applicable and promotable prediction model for assessing the risk of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) within the context of primary healthcare institutions. Methods The construction and the internal validation of the prediction model involved a cohort of 6,216 pregnant women observed from January 2019 to June 2019 in a Class A tertiary hospital in western China. External validation was subsequently conducted with 443 pregnant women from October 2020 to June 2021. Core characteristics were identified and the model was established using the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) regression. Internal validation was performed using the Bootstrap method. Model evaluation included discrimination and calibration tests, decision curve analysis (DCA), and the clinical impact curve. Visualization of the model was achieved through a static nomogram and a risk-scoring model. Results The simplified prediction model possessed seven variables, including age, prepregnancy body mass index (BMI), polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), history of GDM, family history of diabetes, fasting plasma glucose (FPG), and urine glucose. This model exhibited a predictive accuracy, as reflected by a C-index of 0.736 (95% CI: 0.720 similar to 0.753) in the training set. The C-indexes were 0.735 and 0.694 in the internal and external testing set. Well-fitted calibration curves, the DCA curve, and the clinical impact curve demonstrated the feasibility of the simplified prediction model. For enhanced clinical application, the static nomogram and the risk-scoring model were employed to visualize the model. Conclusions This study developed a prediction model for assessing the risk of GDM among women from 8 to 14 weeks of gestation in western China. Genetic diversity atlas of Brucella melitensis strains from sichuan Province, China

Human brucellosis is a re-emerging disease in sichuan Province, China. In this study, bacteriology, conventional bio-typing, multi-locus sequence typing (MLST), and multiple locus variable-number tandem repeat analysis (MLVA) were applied to preliminarily characterize the strains in terms of genetic diversity and epidemiological links. A total of 101 Brucella strains were isolated from 16 cities (autonomous prefectures) from 2014 to 2021, and all of the strains were identified as Brucella melitensis bv. 3, suggesting that surveillance should focus on ruminants. MLST analysis identified four STs, namely, ST8 (n = 93), ST39 (n = 6), ST101 (n = 1), and ST118 (n = 1). The latter were new STs, indicating that strains displayed high population diversity. Six MLVA-8, namely, 42, 43, 45, 63, 83, and 114, and eight MLVA-11, namely, 111, 115, 116, 125, 180, 291, 298, and 342, genotypes were identified, demonstrating that all of the strains were from the Eastern Mediterranean lineage, and these strains exhibited a high genotype diversity. MLVA-16 analysis revealed that there was a co-existing transmission pattern, where sporadic cases and multiple outbreak events had a common origin. The dominant STs and MLVA genotypes of strains were epidemic in Northern, China, and 36 MLVA-16 genotypes were shared among strains (n = 51, 50.4%, 51/101) from sichuan and strains from 22 other provinces. The findings imply that infected animals were introduced from outside the province. The surveillance and control of the disease have become public health challenges. Animal quarantines should be strengthened to prevent the spread of B. melitensis species among adjacent regions.

Therapeutic potential of miR-133a-transfected bone marrow mesenchymal stem cell transplantation in improving cardiac function post-myocardial infarction

ObjectiveThe objective of this study is to examine the therapeutic efficacy of miR-133a-transfected bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BM-MSCs) in restoring damaged myocardium, reducing myocardial fibrosis, and improving cardiac function following myocardial infarction (MI).MethodsBone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BM-MSCs) were transfected with miR-133a using lentivirus vectors, and the in vitro transfection efficiency was assessed. A rat MI animal model was established to examine the survival rate of miR-133a-transfected BM-MSCs in ischemic myocardium. The effects of miR-133a transfection on rat primary cardiac fibroblasts were evaluated both in vitro and in *** experimental group had a significantly higher concentration of double-stranded DNA (dsDNA) compared to the control group. Fluorescent staining revealed an enhanced survival rate of MSCs in the miR-133a transfection group compared to controls. Additionally, the protein and gene expression of apoptosis-related indicators in the infarcted myocardium were lower in the experimental group compared to the control group. Following co-culture with rat primary cardiac fibroblasts, the miR-133a-transfected MSCs exhibited a significantly lower expression of myofibroblast-specific proteins and mRNA compared to controls. The levels of collagen I, connective tissue growth factor (CTGF) protein, and messenger RNA (mRNA) in the infarcted myocardium of rats transplanted with BM-MSCs transfected with miR-133a were significantly lower than those in the control group, and their left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) was significantly increased compared with the group that received unmodified *** results demonstrate that miR-133a transfection following MI improves the survival rate of transplanted MSCs in ischemia-hypoxic myocardium, inhibits the transformation of cardiac fibroblasts into myofibroblasts, reduces myocardial fibrosis, and improves cardiac function following MI. Depressive disorders attributable to childhood sexual abuse and bullying victimization: Temporal trends and socio-demographic inequalities

Background: Childhood sexual abuse and bullying victimization are critical risk factors for depressive disorders, contributing significantly to the global health burden. This study evaluates the global, regional, and national burden of depressive disorders attributable to these factors from 1990 to 2021, focusing on trends, age and sex disparities, and socio-demographic inequalities. Methods: Using Global Burden of Disease 2021 data from 204 countries, we measured the burden in disabilityadjusted life years (DALYs) with 95 % uncertainty intervals (UI). Temporal trends were assessed via estimated annual percentage change (EAPC), with COVID-19-related changes represented by percentage change. Sociodemographic influences were examined using the Socio-demographic Index and inequality indices. Future trends were forecasted using Bayesian models. Results: The global age-standardized DALYs rate (ASDR) for depressive disorders attributable to childhood sexual abuse was 18.08 (95 % UI: 8.75-30.97) per 100,000 population, while bullying victimization accounted for 44.32 (95 % UI: 18.72-83.89). From 1990 to 2021, the burden linked to childhood sexual abuse decreased, whereas bullying victimization steadily increased. Females experienced a higher burden from childhood sexual abuse, while bullying-related depressive disorders peaked in males aged 15-24. In 2021, depressive disorders attributable to childhood sexual abuse displayed negative slope index of inequality values (-14.42, 95 % confidence intervals: -19.04 to -9.80). By 2035, ASDRs for both factors are projected to increase by 37-50 %. Conclusions: This study highlights the substantial burden of depressive disorders due to childhood trauma, emphasizing the need for tailored interventions, equitable mental health care, and global collaboration to address these challenges.

A Maritime Multitarget Tracking Method With Non-Gaussian Measurement Noises Based on Joint Probabilistic Data Association

Multitarget tracking (MTT) plays an important role in maritime missions. However, the typical non-Gaussian noise is introduced into ship sensor measurements due to the complex sea environment, and it degrades the performance of existing multiobject tracking algorithms based on Gaussian assumptions. To address the performance degradation and potential track divergence caused by non-Gaussian noise, a joint probability data association based on noise interaction Kalman filter (JPDA-IKF) is proposed. The novelty of this work lies in the decomposition of measurement noise and the subsequent state fusion based on noise components, which transforms a non-Gaussian linear system into multiple Gaussian linear systems, and it has been extended to nonlinear systems as well. Specifically, the non-Gaussian noise is decomposed into multiple noise components. Then, the JPDA-IKF is employed to handle multiple joint probability data and association (JPDA) filters with different decomposition results. Finally, an interaction method is applied to fuse the filter outputs. Furthermore, we extended the proposed approach to handle nonlinear cases, based on the cubature Kalman filter (CKF). Experimental results using both simulation data and real-world data demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

Self-harm and interpersonal violence attributable to high alcohol use in 204 countries and territories, 1990-2021: Findings from the Global Burden of Disease study 2021

Background: Self-harm and interpersonal violence are pressing global public health concerns, with high alcohol consumption being a significant contributing factor. This study analyzes global trends of self-harm and interpersonal violence attributable to high alcohol use from 1990 to 2021, including the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: Age-standardized death rates (ASDR) and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) were extracted from the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) 2021 to explore the trends of burden. Data were categorized by gender, age groups, regions, and countries, each with a 95 % uncertainty interval (UI). Bayesian age-period-cohort (BAPC) models were used to forecast future trends. Results: In 2021, the global ASDR for self-harm and interpersonal violence attributable to high alcohol use was 0.84 (95 % uncertainty interval [UI]: 0.37 to 1.33) and 0.40 (95 % UI: 0.23 to 0.59) per 100,000 population, respectively. Males had consistently higher ASDRs and DALYs than females across all age groups, particularly in the 20-39 age range, where deaths and DALYs peaked for both outcomes. Regionally, Eastern Europe had the highest burden of self-harm, while Central Latin America showed the highest rates of interpersonal violence attributable to high alcohol use. By 2035, ASDR is projected to decrease by 17 % and 21 % for self-harm and interpersonal violence, respectively. Conclusions: Global alcohol-related self-harm and violence declined long-term but stalled during COVID-19, with higher burdens among males and specific age groups, and significant regional disparities. Sustained public health efforts, targeted policies, and innovative interventions are essential to address persistent disparities and future challenges.

AMPD: an Analects-Mandarin parallel dataset for bidirectional translation

In the field of natural language processing, there is no specialized dataset for the Analects, which makes it difficult to assess whether language models can find the semantic relevance between the Analects and modern Mandarin. To address this issue, this paper proposes a dataset named AMPD (Analects-Mandarin Parallel Dataset), which includes the Analects and its corresponding modern Mandarin, keywords and their annotations in the Analects, as well as sentiment. Additionally, we propose four baseline tasks and benchmark them by implementing currently popular algorithms respectively. [GRAPHICS]

Quantitative Risk Assessment of Wellbore Collapse of Inclined Wells in Formations with Anisotropic Rock Strengths

Shale is a typical sedimentary rock that exhibits anisotropic strength characteristics owing to the presence of planes of weakness, such as bedding planes and joints. However, conventional quantitative risk assessment (QRA) models for wellbore stability often assume that shale is isotropic, leading to inaccurate predictions of the risk of wellbore collapse. This study proposes a novel QRA model of the wellbore collapse risk in inclined wells that considers the combined effects of anisotropic rock strength and parameter uncertainty. First, the semi-analytical model of wellbore collapse was revisited using various coordinate system transformations, the classical Bradley's solution, and a single plane of the weakness criterion. Second, based on the reliability theory, a QRA method of wellbore collapse was established for inclined wells in formations with anisotropic rock strengths. Third, the K-S test and normal information diffusion (NID) method were used to determine the uncertainty of the logging interpretation results. The key parameters with significant uncertainty were obtained through sensitivity analysis. Finally, Monte Carlo simulation was conducted to quantitatively evaluate the risk of wellbore collapse. The results show that when the anisotropic rock strength is considered, the assessment of the equivalent mud weight (EMW) of the collapse pressure is more accurate. The failure of vertical wells primarily occurred within the rock matrix, whereas that of inclined and horizontal wells predominantly occurred along the planes of weakness. The pore pressure, Biot coefficient, and in-situ stress are the parameters with the greatest influence on wellbore stability. When considering the uncertainty of the weak plane occurrence, the collapse pressure EMW for inclined and horizontal wells significantly increased. Inflammation-reducing thermosensitive hydrogel with photothermal conversion for skin cancer therapy

Photothermal therapy (PTT) has widely been utilized for postoperative treatment of skin cancer, while high temperature, usually >50 degrees C, would induce damage to healthy tissue and increased wound inflammation. Herein, we developed an "all in one" hydrogel to enhance mild PTT for postoperative skin cancer treatment while circumventing photothermo-induced inflammation by loading quercetin (Que)-coated tannin-iron (TA-Fe) nanoparticles with poly (N-acrylylglycine) amine (PNAGA) hydrogel (Que@TA-Fe@PNAGA). Exposure to near-infrared light, Que.@TA-Fe@PNAGA occurred a mild temperature increase (similar to 47 degrees C), which induces local mild PTT and disrupts the hydrogen bonds within the hydrogel, triggering a gel-to-sol phase transition and the release of Que.@TA-Fe nanoparticles. These released nanoparticles inhibit the expression of heat shock proteins in tumor cells by producing reactive oxygen species and enter inflammatory cells to release TA and Que. via acid hydrolysis, reducing tumor necrosis factor-alpha expression by 66.6 % and promoting M1-to-M2 macrophage conversion. Based on this integrated functionality, Que.@TA-Fe@PNAGA hydrogel achieves over 99.4 % tumor inhibition rate, effectively avoids photothermo-induced damage in normal tissue and inflammation, and thus represents a new approach for postoperative photothermal therapy in skin cancer treatment.

A Hybrid Charging Scheme for Non-deterministic Mobile Nodes aimed at minimizing the number of dead nodes

Wireless Rechargeable Sensor Networks (WRSNs) are able to solve the energy scarcity issue in wireless sensor networks by employing static chargers or mobile chargers to recharge sensor nodes. Charging static nodes or mobile nodes with certain mobility patterns has been the primary focus of most WRSN research. However, non- deterministic mobile nodes whose mobility patterns are unknown or whose movement cannot be controlled have received limited attention. Due to the uncertainties of nodes' movement, the chargers are unable to determine the locations where they charge the nodes, which makes charging non-deterministic mobile nodes a uniquely challenging problem. In this work, aiming at minimizing the number of dead nodes, we explore the hybrid charging problem for non-deterministic mobile nodes, i.e., the problem of charging non-deterministic mobile nodes by static chargers and mobile chargers simultaneously. We deduce the problem into two subproblems: the static charger deployment problem and the mobile charger scheduling problem, and present their definitions. Then, we propose a Hybrid Charging Scheme for Non-deterministic Mobile Nodes (HCSNMN) that consists of two sub-algorithms, named Hybrid Charging-Static Charger Deployment Algorithm (HC-SCDA) and Hybrid Charging-MC Scheduling Algorithm (HC-MCSA), to address these two sub-problems, respectively. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed HCSNMN consistently outperforms all the existing charging schemes in node death ratio by 3%-13%.
