BiOCl/BiOI nanocomposites were synthesized using a thermal impregnation method for the first time. The intense visible-light absorption and large specific surface area gave 4wt.% BiOCl/BiOI nanocomposites the best visible-light photocatalytic properties among all the catalysts for the photodegradation of methyl orange,about 78% after 2 h. But decreased activities were obtained with the increase of Bi OCl content in the nanocomposites. Considering the light absorption,specific surface area and the quantum efficiency, the high recombination of the photoinduced electron-hole pairs of the catalysts that lowed the quantum efficiency was believed to be the critical factor for their decreased photocatalytic activities.

Low-temperature preparation of lanthanum-doped BiFeO₃ crystallites by a sol-gel-hydrothermal method

Multiferroic Bi1-xLaxFeO3 (BLFO, x = 0, 0.15, 0.3, 0.4) powders were for the first time synthesized by a novel sol-gel-hydrothermal route. The as-prepared samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy. The XRD results indicated that pure BLFO crystallites could be obtained for x <= 0.3, and the phase purity was sensitive to the concentration of mineralizer. SEM results revealed that the morphology and dimension of the BLFO microspheres and submicrotiles could be effectively controlled by varying KOH concentrations. The formation mechanism of the BLFO crystalline was also discussed. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd and Techna Group S.r.l. All rights reserved.

Hydrodynamic plane and axisymmetric slip stagnation-point flow with thermal radiation and temperature jump

This work focuses on the steady boundary layer flow and heat transfer near the forward stagnation point of plane and axisymmetric sheet towards a stretching sheet with velocity slip and temperature jump. The resulting nonlinear partial differential equations are reduced to the system of nonlinear ordinary differential equations by means of similarity transformations. The analytical solutions for the velocity and temperature distributions are obtained for the various values of the ratio of free stream velocity and stretching velocity, velocity slip parameter, magnetic parameter, the suction parameter, temperature jump parameter, Prandtl number, the radiation parameter and dimensionality index parameter in the series forms with the help of homotopy analysis method. Convergence of the series is explicitly discussed. The flow and shear stresses depend heavily on the velocity slip parameter. The temperature gradient at the wall increases with velocity slip parameter, temperature jump factor and decreased thermal radiation.

The influence of thermal radiation on MHD station-point flow past a stretching sheet with heat generation

This letter is concerned with the plane and axisymmetric stagnation-point flows and heat transfer of an electrically-conducting fluid past a stretching sheet in the presence of the thermal radiation and heat generation or absorption. The analytical solutions for the velocity distribution and dimensionless temperature profiles are obtained for the various values of the ratio of free stream velocity and stretching velocity, heat source parameter, Prandtl number, thermal radiation parameter, the suction and injection velocity parameter and magnetic parameter and dimensionality index in the series form with the help of homotopy analysis method （HAM）. Convergence of the series is explicitly dis- cussed. In addition, shear stress and heat flux at the surface are calculated.

To improve the wear property of magnesium alloys, Zr-based amorphous composite coatings have been fabricated on AZ91D magnesium alloy by laser cladding using mixed powders Zr55Al10Ni5Cu30/SiC. The microstructure of the coating was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The wear resistance of the coatings was evaluated under dry sliding wear test condition at room temperature. The results show that the coatings mainly consist of amorphous and different crystalline phases. The coatings exhibit excellent wear resistance due to the recombination action of amorphous and different crystalline phases. The main wear mechanism of the coatings and the AZ91D sample are different, the former is abrasive wear and the latter is adhesive wear.

To improve the corrosion property of magnesium alloys, Mg-based amorphous composite coatings have been fabricated on AZ91D magnesium alloy by laser cladding using mixed powders Mg65Cu25Y10/SiC. The microstructure of the coating was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The corrosion resistance of the coatings was tested in 3.5wt.% NaCl solution. The results show that the coatings mainly consist of amorphous and different crystalline phases. The coatings compared to AZ91D magnesium alloy exhibit good corrosion resistance because of the presence of the amorphous phase in the coatings.

Computational design and simulation of the Mg-Cu system gradeddensity impactors for complex loading experiments

Two types of Mg-Cu composition system graded density impactors used for complex loading （shock loading and quasi-isentropic compression） are designed by the elastic-plastic hydrodynamic method in this paper. Mixtures of metal powders in the Mg-Cu system are cast into a series of 17 and 25 uniform compositions ranging from 100% Mg to 100% Cu. The graded den- sity impactors are launched to the stationary 10 Ixm aluminum film and 12 mm LiF window targets by a two-stage light-gas gun in the National key laboratory for Shock Wave and Detonation Physics Research, Institute of Fluid Physics, CAEP, and the resulting wave profiles are measured with the DISAR system. Hydrodynamic simulation results are perfectly consistent with the experiments. Our work in this paper will set up a foundation for further research of controllable loading/releasing routes and rate experiments in the future.

Gold/sulfide cadmium (Au/CdS) heterostructured nanocrystals with a flower-like shape were for the first time synthesized through an Au-nanorod-induced hydrothermal method. The Au/CdS nanoflowers possessed the average size of about 350 nm while the nanorods constructing the nanoflowers had the average diameter, length, and aspect ratio of approximately 50 nm, 100 nm, and 2, respectively. Our method suggested that Au-nanorods played a decisive role in the formation of Au/CdS heterostructured nanoflowers, demonstrated by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), electron diffraction (ED), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), and UV-visible absorption spectroscopy measurements. A preliminary experiment model to reveal the Au/CdS growth mechanism was also put forward. The route devised here should be perhaps extendable to fabricate other Au/semiconductor heterostructured nanomaterials, and the Au/CdS nanoflowers may have potential applications in nanodevices, biolabels, and clinical detection and diagnosis. Significant advances in the development of millimeter-wave and terahertz (30-10000 GHz) technologies have been made to cope with the increasing interest in this still not fully explored electromagnetic spectrum. The nature of electromagnetic waves over this frequency range is well suited for the development of high-resolution imaging applications, molecular-sensitive spectroscopic devices, and ultrabroadband wireless communications. In this paper, millimeter-wave and terahertz antenna technologies are overviewed including the conventional and nonconventional planar/nonplanar antenna structures based on different platforms. As a promising technological platform, substrate-integrated circuits (SICs) attract more and more attention. Various substrate-integrated waveguide (SIW) schemes and other synthesized guide techniques have been widely employed in the design of antennas and arrays. Different types of substrate-integrated antennas and beamforming networks are discussed with respect to theoretical and experimental results in connection with electrical and mechanical performances. © 2012 IEEE.

Synthesis of Carbonaceous Poly(furfuryl alcohol) Membrane for Water Desalination

A novel carbonaceous poly(furfuryl alcohol) (CPFA) membrane was fabricated by partially carbonizing a poly(furfuryl alcohol) (PFA) layer supported on a commercial polysulfone substrate with high-concentration sulfuric acid at room temperature. Gas permeation experiments suggested that the PFA membrane became microporous after sulfuric acid treatment. ATR-IR spectra showed that the furan structure of PFA was degraded by the high-concentration sulfuric acid, forming CPFA. As compared with the PFA membrane, the CPFA membrane exhibited significantly enhanced chlorine resistance and water desalination properties. The CPFA membrane had a salt rejection of around 93.3% and a water permeability of 1.54 *** m.m(-2).h(-1).bar(-1). After the chlorine treatment, the CPFA membrane exhibited a salt rejection of 73.7% and a water permeability of 2.01 *** m.m(-2).h(-1).bar(-1), whereas the PFA membrane had a salt rejection of only 60.1% and a water permeability of 0.17 *** m.m(-2).h(-1).bar(-1).
