Study on Synergistic Desulfurization and Chlorine Resistance of Alkaline Metal Oxides@ZrO2/γ-Al2O3-Loaded Catalysts

In this article, the atmospheric pollutants carbonyl sulfide (COS) and HCl in blast furnace gas are taken as the research object. Catalysts with gamma-Al2O3 as carrier and alkaline metal oxides as active components are prepared for the synergistic desulfurization and chlorine resistance of blast furnace gas. The results show that the CaO-ZrO2/gamma-Al2O3 hydrolysis catalyst has the best performance. The removal rate of COS is maintained at more than 95 wt%, and the maximum can reach 99 wt%, and the overflow rate of H2S is also maintained at more than 80%. At the same time, the synergistic desulfurization and chlorine resistance treatment efficiency of CaO-ZrO2/gamma-Al2O3 hydrolysis catalyst is maintained at about 90%. This work provides an effective reference for the synergistic removal of acidic and harmful components in actual industrial blast furnace gas.

Transcriptomics and Metabolomics Analysis Reveal the Mechanism of Hormones Regulation of the Flower Bud Formation and development in Phalaenopsis Orchid

Phalaenopsis orchids are a cornerstone of the ornamental plant industry, with a global market value exceeding billions due to their vibrant colors, long flowering period and thus high ornamental and economic value. Notably, plant hormones play essential roles in the formation and development of flower buds, but the underlying mechanism is still unclear. Here, we report that the hormones 6-benzyladenine (6-BA) could promote flower bud formation and development in Phalaenopsis, in which the proline and soluble protein contents and superoxide dismutase activity significantly increased. During the process of flower bud formation and development, the endogenous hormones indole-3-acetic acid (IAA), ethylene (ETH) and 1-amino cyclopropane carboxylic acid (ACC) tended to increase and then decrease, whereas abscisic acid (ABA) tended to increase. Salicylic acid (SA), gibberellin (GA), cytokinin (CTK), and jasmonic acid (JA) showed decreasing trends. In addition, we identified 16 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) related to hormone signaling and biosynthesis and flower bud formation response, which may be pivotal in regulating flower formation. Our study provides insight into flower development in Phalaenopsis.

Mechanistic insights into the impact of bromide ion adsorption and surface bromination on Cu2O for enhanced selectivity and activity in electrochemical CO2 reduction

The enhanced selectivity for C2+ products in the electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (ECO2RR) is critically dependent on the regulation of the elemental existence state on the surface of the electrocatalyst. In this study, Cu2O nanowires featuring multiple grain boundaries were successfully sxynthesized. Two distinct model catalysts were prepared: one through surface adsorption of Br- (denoted as Cu2O_Br) and the other via surface bromination (denoted as Cu2O@CuBr). These models were employed to systematically investigate the influence of the differences between Br- adsorption on the Cu2O surface and surface bromination on activity and product selectivity. The integration of in-situ characterization techniques with electrochemical measurements revealed that Br- adsorption induces a stable charge distribution on the catalyst surface, accompanied by a consistent potential drop within the double layer. This signifies stable and efficient processes of CO2 adsorption, electron transfer, and mass transfer at the electrode/electrolyte interface. Under these conditions, Cu2O_Br exhibits high stability. In contrast, catalyst surfaces modified via surface bromination are prone to Br- dissolution during electrolysis, leading to structural changes and significant surface reconstruction, which ultimately compromise the catalyst's selectivity. Notably, the Cu2O_Br catalyst achieved a maximum Faradaic efficiency (FE) of 98 % for CO production at 0.4 V vs. RHE and 42 % for C2H6 production at 0.6 V vs. RHE. Additionally, the Cu2O_Br catalyst reached an optimal FEC2+ of 60 % at 0.6 V, which is 1.5 times higher than that of the pure Cu2O catalyst under the same potential and 2.5 times higher than that of the Cu2O@CuBr catalyst at 0.9 V. This work provides new insights into enhancing the selectivity and activity of carbon dioxide electroreduction by modulating halide ion adsorption on the catalyst surface and surface halogenation.

Fabrication and evaluation of immobilized lipase on functionalized melamine sponge

An optimal oil-water contact is essential for enhancing lipase catalytic efficiency. This study introduced an innovative approach to generate multiple oil-water interfaces, thereby creating a conducive microenvironment for lipase activity. A one-step impregnation of APTES was adopted to functionalize commercially available melamine sponge (MS), resulting in an APTES-melamine sponge (AMS) with modified wettability (water absorption rate of 353 %, water contact angle of 121.8). To further optimize catalytic efficiency and adaptability, particularly under environmentally sensitive reaction conditions, we explored two immobilization strategies-physical adsorption and covalent crosslinking-yielding AMS-Lipase and AMS-GA-Lipase, respectively. These strategies achieved enzyme loadings of 400 mg/g and 2200 mg/g, respectively, surpassing previous benchmarks in the field. The expanded catalytic surface area, facilitated by the microstructured oil-water interfaces, enhanced the lipase activity of AMS-Lipase and AMS-GA-Lipase to 3.16 and 4.02 times that of free lipase, respectively. Furthermore, the incorporation of surfactants and ultrasonic treatment intensified interactions at the oil-water interface, boosting lipase activity by 4.52 and 5.04 times. Additionally, both AMSLipase and AMS-GA-Lipase demonstrated superior environmental stability, maintaining high activity across a wide temperature range (-20 degrees C to 80 degrees C) and pH range (4.5-9), along with excellent reusability, retaining 90.86 % and 98.86 % of their activity after eight cycles, respectively. These attributes underscore their significant potential for practical applications.

Background In this study, we aimed to explore the association between baseline and early changes in the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and the 30-day mortality rate in patients having anti-melanoma differentiation-associated gene 5 (MDA5)-positive dermatomyositis with interstitial lung disease (DM-ILD). Methods Overall, 263 patients with anti-MDA5 DM-ILD from four centers in China were analyzed. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to evaluate the impact of baseline NLR on the 30-day mortality rate in patients with anti-MDA5-positive DM-ILD. Furthermore, a generalized additive mixed model (GAMM) was applied to compare the NLR variations over time between 30-day survival group and non-survival group. Results Two hundred sixty-three patients with anti-MDA5-positive DM-ILD were divided into different groups based on their NLR and whether they survived or not within 30 days. The multivariate logistic regression analysis, accounting for confounding factors, identified an elevated baseline NLR as a prognostic indicator for 30-day mortality in patients with anti-MDA5-positive DM-ILD (hazard ratio 2.68, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.18,6.00, P = 0.019). Furthermore, the GAMM results indicated that the NLR gradually increased more in the non-survival group compared with the survival group within 14 days of admission, with a daily average increase of 1.03 (beta = 1.03;95% CI, 0.75-1.31;P < 0.001). Conclusions We found that an elevated baseline NLR and its progressive increase are associated with 30-day mortality in patients with anti-MDA5-positive DM-ILD.

Amination of n-hexanol to n-hexylamine over Ru-Ni bimetallic catalyst

BACKGROUND: The synthesis of fatty amines via fatty alcohol amination offers a promising avenue for environmentally friendly production, particularly when compared with the methods employing hydrocyanic acid which often involve significant emissions. RESULT: This study explores the synthesis of n-hexylamine through one-step amination of n-hexanol utilizing a series of Rudoped Ni catalysts supported over gamma-Al2O3, achieving 61% n-hexanol yield, 35% dihylamine yield and 3.5% trihylamine yield at the n-hexanol conversion of 99%. CONCLUSION: The characterization results of the catalysts revealed a significant interaction between ruthenium and nickel in the bimetallic catalysts, leading to the enhanced reducibility of Ni species and improved metal dispersion. Moreover, ruthenium species were found to play an important role in the dissociation of NH3 into NHx (x = 1, 2), thereby significantly improving the dehydrogenation process of n-hexanol at Ni sites. The synergistic effect between the two kinds of metal sites emerges as crucial factor for the boosted alcohols amination process. (c) 2024 Society of Chemical Industry (SCI).

Stabilization effects and mechanisms of lignin-based hydrogel-coated sulfide nano-zero-valent iron on lead and cadmium contamination in soil

Nano zero-valent iron (nZVI) is extensively employed in soil remediation due to its superior capacity for removing heavy metals, however, issues related to its agglomeration and oxidation hinder its practical application. Therefore, in this study, lignin-based hydrogel-coated nano ferric sulfide (BLS-nZVI@LH) was synthesized and evaluated for its stabilizing effect, underlying mechanism, and influence on the soil microenvironment and health risks. The results indicate that BLS-nZVI@LH significantly mitigated nZVI agglomeration and oxidation, thereby enhancing its reactivity. The formation of FeS on the particle surface provided additional active sites for stabilizing Pb and Cd in the soil. In soil incubation experiments, BLS-nZVI@LH significantly improved the stability of Pb and Cd after 90 days. Compared to sulfide nano-zero-valent iron (S-nZVI) and ball-milled lignin sulfide nano-zero-valent iron (BLS-nZVI), BLS-nZVI@LH increased the soil's residual Cd content by 23.0 % and 31.0 %, respectively, and the oxidizable Pb content by 10.9 % and 20.8 %. Characterization analysis revealed that precipitation, redox reactions, and surface complexation primarily govern Cd stabilization by BLS-nZVI@LH, whereas complexation and reduction predominantly contribute to Pb immobilization. Furthermore, BLS-nZVI@LH improved soil pH and organic carbon content, boosting beta-glucosidase and peroxidase activities. It also promoted the richness and diversity of soil microbial communities, particularly enhancing the growth of Journal of Hazardous Materials 492 (2025) 138095 Sphingomonas, Gemmatimonas, and RB41, thereby improving the soil microenvironment and boosting remediation capacity. In continuous cropping experiments, the addition of 0.5 % and 1 % BLS-nZVI@LH significantly reduced Pb and Cd absorption and accumulation in Chinese broccoli. Benchmark antenna designs via wind driven optimization with dynamic control parameters

An approach to accelerating the convergence of the wind driven optimization (WDO) is proposed based on a novel Taguchi-based dynamic control parameter (CP) identification method. To find the best CP combinations with different numbers of fitness evaluations, the Taguchi method is used, and the fitted dynamic CP functions are determined to represent the variation of each CP. Furthermore, an extra velocity update strategy is proposed, which integrates information from both the personal best and the global best to enhance the exploitation of WDO. The proposed algorithm is validated by nine benchmarks involving four functions and five antenna designs. Additionally, its optimization performance is compared with that of state-of-the-art meta- heuristic algorithms. The results demonstrate the effectiveness of this method in improving the convergence speed of WDO.

Influence of perforation characteristics and geotextile envelopes on the drain pipe

Preventing clogging effectively and ensuring stable drainage performance are crucial for the efficacy of subsurface drainage systems. This paper presents the results of a laboratory study on the drainage performance of drain pipes using soil samples from the Yinbei Irrigation District in ningxia hui autonomous region, China. The perforation characteristics and geotextile envelopes were investigated. Results demonstrated that a drain pipe with a six-row staggered perforation layout performed exceptionally well in drainage. Increasing the number and reducing the size of perforations while maintaining a constant perforation ratio can enhance drainage performance. A higher degree of clogging was observed in the geotextile envelope at the bottom of the drain pipe, and this issue can be mitigated by increasing the perforation ratio of the pipe wall. Findings from this study can provide theoretical support and practical guidance for optimizing the design of drain pipe perforations and the selection of geotextile envelopes in subsurface drainage.

Effect of carbonated recycled aggregates on the mechanical properties and bonding performance of polyurethane mortar as a repair material

Recycled aggregate (RA) made from construction waste has limited application due to its high porosity, numerous cracks, and other disadvantages such as reduced concrete strength when using aggregate). In this paper, carbonated recycled aggregate (CRA) was obtained by carbonating recycled aggregate, and natural aggregate (NA) in polyurethane mortar (PUM) was replaced at different ratios. The physical changes and pore structure of RA before and after carbonation, the mechanical properties (compressive and flexural strength) of PUM, and the three-point bending bond performance were systematically investigated. The compactness of PUM was detected by ultrasonic velocity (UPV) test. The change mechanism of PUM microstructure was revealed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results show that when the replacement rate is 50%, the compressive and flexural strength of carbonated PUM increased by 7.32% and 15.83%, respectively, and bond strength increased by 14.19%, all of which are greater than the increase at a replacement rate of 25%. The mechanical properties of P with RA as aggregate decreased, but the generated calcium carbonate after carbonation treatment can fill the surface pores and enhance the pore structure of CRA, and the mechanical properties of three-point bending bond performance of the test pieces with the same replacement ratio were improved compared with those replaced by RA. © The Author(s) 2025.
