Fungi in biocrusts facilitate ecosystem restoration during long-term vegetation succession in arid environments

Fungi in drylands play a crucial ecological role as facilitators of soil carbon allocation and nutrient availability. However, it remains unclear whether the complex interspecific characteristics of fungal communities in biocrusts are influenced by different environmental factors. Here, at an ideal ecosystem successional study site (almost 65 years), we experimentally investigated whether the structure, diversity and molecular ecological network of fungal communities change with vegetation recovery and succession. Using molecular ecological network analysis and diversity indices, we found that early successional stages, despite lower fungal biomass, were dominated by resilient species such as Filobasidium Their vigorous mycelial growth effectively decomposes recalcitrant organic compounds like lignin, releasing nutrients into the soil. Their developed mycelia can also wrap around soil particles, promoting the formation of biocrusts. In later stages, fungi proliferate, such as Omphalina, forming symbiotic relationships with lichens or mosses to protect and regulate moisture, while obtaining essential carbon sources for growth. Although an increase in positive-to-negative interactions in cooccurrence networks can reduce network stability, it promotes mutualistic interactions that enhance ecosystem functioning. As succession advances, increased fungal diversity and network complexity foster the secretion of metabolites that contribute to soil stabilization, nutrient cycling, and overall ecosystem recovery. Our findings suggest that increasing fungal network complexity and cooperation over time play a critical role in enhancing ecosystem function, particularly in nutrient cycling and soil stabilization, during the later stages of succession. Efficacy of Double-Lumen Biliary-Enteric Tube in Enteral Nutrition for Patients with Malignant Obstructive Jaundice

ObjectiveThis study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of a double-lumen biliary-enteric tube (DBET) for enteral nutrition (EN) in individuals with malignant obstructive jaundice (MOJ). MethodsA retrospective cohort study was conducted using data from a prospectively maintained single-center database, including patients with MOJ. In the intervention group, DBET placement was performed concurrently with percutaneous transhepatic cholangiodrainage and biliary stenting, followed by postoperative EN (DBET-EN). In the control group, deep vein catheterization was undertaken after endoscopic biliary stenting, and parenteral nutrition (PN) was provided. A multivariable generalized linear model was used to assess the association between DBET-EN and 6-month mortality. ResultsA total of 74 patients were included in this study, comprising 28 patients in the intervention group (DBET-EN group) and 46 patients in the control group (PN group). Within the 6-month follow-up, 5 patients (17.9%) in the DBET-EN group and 20 (43.5%) in the PN group died. The multivariable generalized linear model demonstrated a significantly reduced 6-month mortality in the DBET-EN group compared to the PN group (adjusted odds ratio [OR]: 0.25, 95% CI: 0.08-0.81, P = 0.020). Secondary outcomes indicated that patients in the DBET-EN group had lower 9-month mortality rates and longer tube retention durations compared to the PN group (all adjusted P < 0.05). Postoperative liver function improved similarly in both groups. At 3, 6, and 9 months postoperatively, patient-generated subjective global assessment (PG-SGA) scores and the European Organization for research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire-C30 (EORTC QLQ-C30) scores were significantly higher in the DBET-EN group than in the PN group (P < 0.05). The primary objective of this study was to investigate the potential pharmacological effects of Hyperoside (Hyp) extract on chronic social defeat stress (CSDS)-induced depression-like behavior in mice. We established CSDS mice to evaluate the antidepressant effects of Hyp. Additionally, We assessed the changes in neuroinflammatory factors in the TRX1/NLRP1/Caspase-1 signaling pathway using adeno-associated virus (AAV) and BV2 microglial cells. The expression levels of TRX1 protein and BDNF also increased by Hyp, while NLRP1 and Caspase-1 a significant decrease. Additionally, Hyp was found to inhibit TRX1 ubiquitination in the microglial inflammation model. In both in vivo and in vitro experiments, it was found that Hyp significantly promotes microglial polarization towards the M2 phenotype in the hippocampus and alleviates neuroinflammation, thereby improving depression-like behavior in CSDS mice. This is associated with the regulation of TRX1 ubiquitination, which inhibits the expression levels of NLRP1 and Caspase-1 proteins.

ContextFlavones, the key active components in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), have demonstrated antidepressant activity. Given the numerous animal studies conducted, a systematic analysis is essential to provide a valuable reference for future *** study investigated the antidepressant activity of flavones based on animal models and summarized the underlying *** systematically searched 7 bibliographic Databases as of August 12, 2023, such as Web of Science, PubMed, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, etc. The meta-analysis was performed using either the random or fixed-effect model, supplemented by trial sequential analysis (TSA). The Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, development and Evaluations (GRADE) approach was used to assess the quality of *** total of 25 studies involving 458 mice were included, identifying five flavones (baicalin, baicalein, apigenin, luteolin, vitexin) with antidepressant activity. Compared to the control group, flavones significantly reduced immobility time in forced swimming and tail suspension tests. Flavones also decreased serum and hippocampal levels of interleukin (IL)-1 beta and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha), reduced nuclear factor kappa B (NF-kappa B) levels, and increased brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) levels. Relative to the positive group, flavones raised IL-6, sucrose preference rate, and corticosterone (CORT) levels, with no significant differences in other factors. The TSA showed the efficacy of flavones for treating depression with adequate 'information size' for the primary *** results demonstrate that flavones exert protective effects against depression in mice, primarily by stimulating neurotrophic factors and modulating inflammatory pathways. These findings emphasize their potential as promising candidates for the development of novel antidepressant therapies.

Response of Ammonia-oxidizing Archaea to Nitrogen Enrichment and of Plant Litter Inputs in Desert Steppe Topsoil

Ammonia-oxidizing archaea (AOA), a group of key drivers in nitrification, are commonly found in soil. Nitrogen (N) enrichment and the input of litter affect the form of N and its nitrification. However, the response of AOA to integrated N enrichment and plant litter inputs in desert steppe topsoil remains unclear. A field study was conducted that utilized the plant litter of four dominant species in the desert as a treatment, which was integrated with two N enrichment treatments (0 and 9.2 mol center dot N center dot m(-2)center dot yr(-1)). High-throughput sequencing was used to study the response of AOA-amoA to N enrichment and inputs of plant litter in desert steppe topsoil and its associated microbial mechanisms. The soil AOA were sensitive to enrichment with N, and their abundance decreased from 8.8 x 10<^>5 to 5.5 x 10<^>5 copies center dot g(-2) dry soil following the N treatment. Different types of litter also affected the abundance of AOA-amoA, but there was no significant difference between the treatments. Soil organic carbon, ammonium-N, total phosphorus, total salt, and nitrate-N were significantly related to the structure of AOA communities in the desert steppe. Network and Zi-Pi analyses indicated that the application of N significantly increased the number of key species in the AOA community from 5 to 29 and enhanced the competitiveness of the community relationships;the dominant genus in the key population changed from Thaumarchaeota to Crenarchaeota. N enrichment can significantly reduce the abundance of AOA-amoA by altering the AOA keystone species in the topsoil of a desert steppe.

Impact of combined grape maturity and selected Saccharomyces cerevisiae on flavor profiles of young 'cabernet sauvignon' wines

Grape maturity and yeast strains are crucial to determining young wine quality. This study evaluates the impact of three grape maturity levels with sugar contents of 22, 25, and 28 degrees Brix combined with two S. cerevisiae strains selected from distinct terroirs on the Cabernet Sauvignon wine profile in the ningxia Qingtongxia region in China. Physicochemical parameters and volatile aroma compounds were analyzed and quantitative descriptive analysis was performed on wine samples. The results indicated that berry ripeness primarily influenced physicochemical profiles, while aroma characteristics were affected by both grape maturity and yeast strain. Some esters and higher alcohols increased with grape maturity. Late-harvest wines scored significantly higher in aroma and taste quality than early-harvest wines. The CECA strain yielded wines with elevated medium-chain ester levels, reduced higher alcohols, improved balance and purity, and enhanced the typical aroma of blackberry, spice, and dark chocolate.

The planting years of vineyards alters the carbon fixation pathways by soil autotrophic microorganism

Despite previous reports that autotrophic microorganisms have capable of absorbing atmospheric CO2 and increasing soil organic carbon content, their specific pathways involved in carbon fixation have remained elusive. This study aimed to evaluate the differences of eight known carbon fixation pathways involving soil autotrophic microorganisms in vineyard soils with different planting years, and reveal the effects of soil physicochemical properties on the composition of carbon fixation microorganisms. Thus, we performed metagenomic sequencing on one uncultivated soil and four vineyard soils of different planting years. The results showed that autotrophic microorganisms harboring genes of eight konwn pathways related to carbon fixation were identified at each sampling site. The predominant phyla of autotrophic microorganisms were Actinomycetota, Pseudomonadota, and Acidobacteriota, respectively. The rTCA cycle was the most prominent carbon fixation pathway in this study. The relative abundance of genes related to rTCA cycle were increased by 11 %, 7 %, 4 %, and 8 % in the 5year-old (C5), the 10-year-old (C10), the 15-year-old (C15), and the 20-year-old (C20) vineyard soils, respectively, compared to that in soil of uncultivated land (UL). The abundance of enzyme encoding genes involved in carbon fixation pathways varied significantly among soil samples, and the variation trend was consistent with the abundances of genes related to carbon fixation pathway, indicating their significant involvement in regulating carbon fixation. Moreover, environmental factors significantly impacted to the composition of autotrophic microbial, in particular, pH was primarily factor impacted on the composition of autotrophic microbial involved in carbon fixation. The development of knowledge graphs represents a significant milestone in the field of symbolism, offering a suitable data model for describing intricate resource relationships across diverse domains. Regular Path Queries (RPQs) have gained considerable attention in the field of knowledge graphs as they serve as the predominant form of navigational queries. Their widespread research and discussion in recent years have made them a research focus of investigation. Due to the lack of a dedicated benchmark for RPQs, in this paper, we have developed RPQBench, the first benchmark specifically designed for evaluating RPQ algorithms. The RPQBench can effectively generate graph data consisting of a specified amount of paths whose lengths conform to the power-law distribution. Additionally, based on statistical results from real corpora and a review of existing research on RPQs, we propose a set of benchmark queries, which include all typical regular expression operators and cover all typical patterns of RPQs that match paths of various lengths. We have benchmarked the state-of-the-art graph database systems with RPQ feature using RPQBench. The experimental results show that our RPQBench is effective and efficient in evaluating RPQ performance of graph databases. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.

Robust optimal reinsurance and investment strategy for an insurer and a reinsurer with default risks and jumps

In this article, we analyze a robust optimal reinsurance and investment problem in a model with default risks and jumps for a general company which holds shares of an insurer and a reinsurer. The insurer's surplus is characterized by a diffusion model and the insurer has the opportunity to buy proportional reinsurance from the reinsurer. Moreover, the insurer can invest in a risk-free asset (bank account), a risky asset (stock), and a defaultable bond. Meanwhile, the reinsurer can also invest in a risk-free asset and another risky asset. The price dynamics of the risky asset is assumed to follow a jump-diffusion model. What is more, the general company is concerned about the ambiguity and aims to find a robust optimal reinsurance and investment strategy. The objective of the general company is to maximize the minimal expected exponential utility of the weighted sums of the insurer's and the reinsurer's terminal wealth. Applying stochastic dynamic programming approach, we first establish the robust HJB (Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman) equations for the post-default case and the pre-default case, respectively. Furthermore, we obtain the robust optimal strategy explicitly and present the corresponding verification theorem. Finally, we give some numerical examples to demonstrate the influences of model parameters on the robust optimal strategy.
