We propose a novel Biomechanics-based Responsive Balance Recovery (BRBR) technique for synthesizing realistic balance recovery animations. First, our BRBR technique is based on a simplified human biomechanical model of keeping balance, so as to interactively respond to contact forces in the environment. Then, we employ the Principal Component Analysis (PCA) to reduce the dimensions of the mocap (motion capture) database to ensure the search for the most qualified return-to segment in real-time. Finally, empirical results from three cases validate the approach.

It has previously been shown that distance mitigates the extent to which visual cues convey perceived threat. It was hypothesized that the visual cues of eye contact, sex, facial expression, and posture would all convey threat. It was further hypothesized that the effects of visual cues on the perception of threat would decrease with distance, but the extent of those decreases was unknown. In the present study, participants were exposed to images of people situated in a physical venue. The images were created to exhibit combinations of the levels of the four visual cues (yes or no for eye contact, male or female for sex, hostile or benign for facial expression, and hostile or benign for posture). Participants were given an opportunity to record how threatening the images of the people seemed to be. The results supported all a priori hypotheses regarding the effects of the visual cues. The results also generated estimates of the distances at which those visual cues ceased to convey threat.

Digital video recording (DVR) has become a very popular consumer technology. Solid-state disks (SSDs), based on NAND flash technology, have emerged as an alternative to magnetic disks. There is a clear motivation to use SSDs to do DVR, but there are severe reliability issues that must be addressed in order to make this possible. This outlines the issues associated with NAND-flash-based DVR and derives expressions for the usable lifetime of SSD-based DVR in a handheld/mobile application.

We have previously introduced the Diffraction Specific Coherent Panoramagram - a multi-view holographic stereogram that provides correct visual accommodation as well as smooth motion parallax with far fewer views than a normal stereogram. This method uses scene depth information to generate directionally-varying wavefront curvature, and can be computed at interactive rates using off-the-shelf graphics processors. In earlier work we used z-buffer information associated with parallax views rendered from synthetic graphics models;in this paper we demonstrate the computation of Diffraction Specific Coherent Panoramagrams of real-world scenes captured by cameras.

We present a selection technique for 2D and 3D environments based on proxy objects designed to improve selection of occluded and dynamic objects. We explore the design space for proxies, of which we implemented the properties colour similarity and motion similarity and tested them in a user study. Our technique significantly increases selection precision but is slower than the reference selection technique, suggesting a mix of both to optimise speed versus error rate for real world applications.

Like the SolidWorks Bible , but want more on parts? New version provides greater detail than ever SolidWorks fans have long sought more detail and information on SolidWorks topics, and now you have it. We took our popular SolidWorks Bible , divided it into two books ( SolidWorks 2011 Parts Bible and SolidWorks 2011 Assemblies Bible ) and packed each new book with a host of items from your wish lists, such as more extensive coverage of the basics, additional tutorials, and expanded coverage of topics largely ignored by other books. This SolidWorks Parts Bible shows you how to do parts modeling and parts drawing using the latest version of the 3D solid modeling program, SolidWorks Thoroughly describes best practices and beginning-to-advanced techniques using both video and text Expands coverage of topics that readers have asked for, including Pack-and-Go, search criteria, and greater coverage of file management Written by well-known and well-respected SolidWorks guru, Matt Lombard Can stand alone, or also with the SolidWorks 2011 Assemblies Bible , for a complete SolidWorks reference set Keep both the SolidWorks 2011 Parts Bible and the SolidWorks 2011 Assemblies Bible on your desk, and you'll have the best resource set out there on SolidWorks!

We propose a glasses-free 3D display, named fVisiOn, that floats virtual 3D objects on a flat tabletop surface. The approach employs a combination of an optical device and a circularly arranged projector array. It reproduces a light field optimized for a seated condition at a certain volume and forms a ring-shaped viewing area. In this principle, the optical device must control the traveling direction of numerous rays passing the volume. An appropriate algorithm for supplying source images for the projector array should also be considered. This paper introduces several approaches for fabricating a variety of these optical devices in different shapes. Those devices work like a special screen by applying an anisotropic diffusion characteristic. We then propose an algorithm that generates source images and describe an implementation method for the 3D display as a system. The algorithm is confirmed from several 3D images generated by the system.

High-definition computer-generated holograms (CGH) created by the polygon-based method feature reconstruction of very fine 3D image accompanied with strong sensation of depth. However, rendering technique for specular surfaces has not been established. We propose a novel technique for smooth shading of specular surfaces in the polygon-based method. This technique divides the surface function of polygons into some segments and controls the spectral envelopes.

In this paper, we assumed that the nonverbal communication by using 3DAgents with natural gestures had various advantages compared with only the traditional voice and video communication, and we developed the IMoTS (Interactive Motion Tracking System) to verify this hypothesis. The features of this system are that the natural gestures of 3DAgents are captured easily by using interactive GUI from the 2D video images in which some characteristic human behaviors are captured, transmitted, and reproduced by natural gestures of 3DAgents. From the experimental results, we showed that the accuracy of captured gestures which often used in web communications was within the level of detectable limit. And we found that human behaviors could be characterized by the mathematical formula, and some of the information could be transmitted, especially some personalities such as quirks and likeness had the predominant effects of impressions and memories of human.
