In this paper, we propose novel algorithms for inpainting and refinement of diffeomorphisms. We first represent a diffeomorphism by its Beltrami coefficient. Then it is possible to refine and inpaint the diffeomorphism by processing this Beltrami coefficient. With the inpainted/refined Beltrami coefficient, we construct a new diffeomorphism using the exact Beltrami holomorphic flow algorithm proposed in this paper. We apply our algorithms on several practical applications, which include the inpainting of a highly distorted diffeomorphism, the inpainting of image sequences of deforming shapes, the super-resolution of diffeomorphisms and the global parameterization of cortical surfaces by combining local parameterizations. Experiments show that our algorithm can solve these problems with natural and smooth results. We demonstrate how our proposed method can be widely applied in areas from texture mapping to video processing, and from computer graphics to medical imaging.

It generates hologram data by simulating the light waves of the recording processes of optical holography such as reflections, diffractions, propagations, and interferences in computers. Holograms are generated by out-putting hologram data to certain devices. The holograms reconstruct natural 3D objects as well as does optical holography. Moreover, virtual objects created by the computer can be reconstructed. However, there are many problems in realizing a 3D display based on CGH. In particular, improving the reality of reconstructed images is a serious issue. To improve reality, we have studied rendering technologies for CGH such as reflectance distributions.(1) By taking into consideration reflectance distributions for CGH, images with various luminance can be reconstructed. However, the previous work was used to generate hologram data by using only 2D objects. To reconstruct complex objects of high realty, the reconstruction of 3D objects with reflectance distributions is necessary. To solve this problem, polygon models can be used to reconstruct 3D objects.(2,3) The polygon model of the object is divided into many planar polygons. However, to reconstruct curved surfaces, many polygons are required.

This study presents a driver Traffic Training Simulator (TTS) that utilizes intelligent synthetic actors. The movements of intelligent actors are realized using a network flow graph consisting of segment nodes. The intelligent actors in traffic are capable of such objectives as vehicles and lane following. In addition, they are capable of moving according to the traffic signs and lights. The duration of traffic lights can parametrically be determined by the simulator interface. Moreover, parametric values such as weather conditions, seasons, and sunlight can be fed to the simulator as inputs. Similarly, the type of the driver's vehicle and other intelligent vehicles and their numbers can also be parametrically determined. The driver is able to drive in the heavy and light traffic conditions. Currently we are focusing on incorporating the hardware components into the system. We propose a method for sign language animation by skin region detection applied to a thermal infrared image. In a system incorporating the proposed method, a 3D CG model corresponding to a person's characteristic posture while using sign language is generated automatically by pattern recognition of the thermal image, and then a person's hand in the CG model is set. The hand part is made manually beforehand. If necessary, the model can be replaced manually by a more appropriate model corresponding to training key frames and/or the same generated model can be refined manually. In our experithents, three hearing-impaired people, experienced in using sign language, recognized the Japanese sign language gestures of 70 words expressed as animation with 94.3% accuracy. We further improved the system by correcting the position and the direction of the hand of the automatically generated model through the use of a fuzzy algorithm and simulated annealing.
