Virtual reconstruction and representation of historical environments and objects have been of research interest for nearly two decades. Physically based and historically accurate illumination allows archaeologists and historians to authentically visualise a past environment to deduce new knowledge. This report reviews the current state of illuminating cultural heritage sites and objects using computer graphics for scientific, preservation and research purposes. We present the most noteworthy and up-to-date examples of reconstructions employing appropriate illumination models in object and image space, and in the visual perception domain. Finally, we also discuss the difficulties in rendering, documentation, validation and identify probable research challenges for the future. The report is aimed for researchers new to cultural heritage reconstruction who wish to learn about methods to illuminate the past.

Transportation is the backbone of civilization and the reason for our economic prosperity for the past 50-plus years. There's serious money in our transportation infrastructure, research, policy, data collection, and, yes, software and other IT systems. This article gives a high-level introduction to visualization research in the transportation community, discusses research opportunities, and encourages the computer graphics community to get involved. This paper finds reachable regions for a single segment of parametric rational cubic Bezier spiral matching G(2) Hermite data. First we derive spiral conditions for rational cubics and then we use a free parameter to find the admissible region for a spiral segment with respect to the curvatures at its endpoints under the fixed positional and tangential end conditions. Quaternions are used in many fields of science and computing, but teaching them remains challenging. Students can have a great deal of trouble understanding essentially what quaternions are and how they can represent rotation matrices. In particular, the similarity transform qvq(-1) which actually achieves rotation, can often be baffling even after students have seen a full derivation. This paper outlines a constructive method for teaching quaternions, which allows students to build intuition about what quaternions are, and why simple multiplication is not adequate to represent a rotation. Through a set of examples, it demonstrates exactly how quaternions relate to rotation matrices, what goes wrong when qv is naively used to rotate vectors, and how the similarity transform fixes the problem.

Consistent geometry parameterization of different models used in multidisciplinary optimization is one of the major issues for efficient design optimization. In this research, physics-based free-form deformation and radial-basis-function-based deformation approaches that allow a direct manipulation of an arbitrary object are proposed for efficient geometry manipulation and parameterization in the optimization processes. The developed methods can deform any computational mesh mapped on the deformable geometry at once. The methods have several advantages for geometry parameterization, such as easy handling of complex objects, direct manipulation, local controllability, and intuitive deformation as real elastic objects. In addition, they offer a straightforward solution for constructing a hierarchical/adaptive parameterization that can benefit the optimization algorithmic performances. Application to an aerodynamic design optimization showed that the methods were effective for efficient design optimization.

The Expressive Gaze Model (EGM) is a hierarchical framework for composing simple behaviors into emotionally expressive gaze in virtual characters that encompasses eye, torso, and head movement. The EGM's primary components are the Gaze Warping Transformation (GWT), which generates emotionally expressive head and torso movement in a gaze shift, and an eye movement model.
