I have developed some instructional sequences and other software that could be used either in the teaching of courses in art and design or additional research on the nature of the formal structure found in works of art. I call this a project in the development of visual languages. I have been using a new IBM software program, called Handy, that allows one to make use of video disk technology. Video disks and interactive computer software programs offer the possibilities of powerful new technologies for both instruction and research in art and design. Use of this system is discussed.

The article discusses the benefits of using interactive graphics processing unit (GPU) to gain a stereoscopic visualization of crash simulations in the automotive industry. The sector acknowledges the key disciplines of simulation to determine its effectivity in reducing development costs, time-to-market, support in technological innovation and remain competitive. It is also seen that the improvement in graphic card technology and stream processors will increase and expand the trend in detailed simulation models.

A class of polynomial curves which is a generalization of the class of “Pólya curves” studied by R. Goldman [9–11] is introduced. This new scheme contains not only Bézier curves (of which Pólya curves are a generalization), but also Lagrange interpolating polynomials. Motives for studying this new class of curves are recounted and then the geometric properties of these curves are investigated. Surfaces are also briefly discussed.

Engineering design and drafting applications currently account for the largest number of computer graphics applications; however, experts predict that the growth of business graphics applications will exceed all others in the industry. Some colour graphics terminals, such as the Digital Equipment Company (DEC) GIGI terminal, are attractive to use for examining cell layout. But, because of their limited screen memory, such terminals do not define colour on a single-pixel basis. Crossing lines of differing colours lead to annoying colour conflict. Frequently, the result is to display, in the same colour, geometries existing on two or more layers. This results in a confusing picture which most affects students if they have no access to a Design Rule Checking program. The alternative of repeatedly check-plotting leaf-cells leads to a serious bottleneck, when only one hard-copy colour plotter is available, because of the slow plotting speed. The algorithm described herein is simple, reduces the colour conflicts to an acceptable level, and may easily be added to most plotting software.

This paper presents an efficient algorithm for finding all characteristic curves of nonlinear resistive circuits. This algorithm is based on interval analysis and a new computational test for nonexistence of a characteristic curve in a given region X. In this test, the simplex method is applied to a linear programming (LP) problem whose feasible region contains all characteristic curves in X. Such an LP problem can be formulated by replacing the component nonlinear functions with auxiliary variables and linear inequalities that are obtained by using interval extensions. If the feasible region of the LP problem is empty (that can be easily checked by the simplex method), then there is no characteristic curve in X. This test is much more powerful than the conventional nonexistence test, which makes the number of analyzed regions much smaller. By numerical examples, it is shown that the proposed algorithm can find all characteristic curves of nonlinear resistive circuits much more efficiently than the conventional algorithm. Techniques are suggested for improved color treatment in real-rime rendering of synthetic environments. These include the use of emissive textures within a radiosity-based global illumination model, the addition of dynamic specular highlights to a radiosity-based model, and an alternative approach to full spectral representation that uses a radiosity solution engine in the complex domain. The target application, dynamic rendering of theatrical settings for lighting design, demands both color accuracy and correct treatment of subtle reflections, translucency, and specular highlights. Three-dimensional (3D) visualization is becoming increasingly frequent in both qualitative and quantitative biomechanical studies of anatomical structures involving multiple data sources (e.g. morphological data and kinematics data). For many years, this kind of experiment was limited to the use of bi-dimensional images due to a lack of accurate 3D data. However, recent progress in medical imaging and computer graphics has forged new perspectives. Indeed, new techniques allow the development of an interactive interface for the simulation of human motions combining data from both medical imaging (i.e., morphology) and biomechanical studies (i.e., kinematics). Fields of application include medical education, biomechanical research and clinical research. This paper presents an experimental protocol for the development of anatomically realistic joint simulation within a pedagogical context. Results are shown for the lower limb. This article describes geometric curve primitive, known as cord, which allows for interactive modeling of curves that contact complex geometry. There are three primary criteria for algorithmic models of curves identified in creative design and animation applications. So far, the current algorithms for curve modeling do not meet the three primary criteria. The appearance properties of cords lets users modify either shape or length. The stiffness and slack properties affect the cord shape. As a whole, the use of cords for curve designs in surfaces, shape modeling of flat and tubular structures has demonstrated that cords are a compelling curve primitive for use in complex production environments.
