We have developed an application that enables a teacher to easily create video lectures by simply writing a script. A CG character speaks with voice synthesis while showing slides explaining them with subtitles. The teacher just needs to write the speech lines and simple commands in a text editor, and the CG animation is automatically generated by the application. This time, both the CG lectures and the actual lectures were provided to students in an actual university course, and a survey was conducted to evaluate our method after the course. The result shows that the CG lecture was working well, but there were a few students who were not satisfied with it.

Realistic animation of various interactions between multiple fluids, possibly undergoing phase change, is a challenging task in computer graphics. The visual scope of multi-phase multi-fluid phenomena covers complex tangled surface structures and rich color variations, which can greatly enhance visual effect in graphics applications. Describing such phenomena requires more complex models to handle challenges involving the calculation of interactions, dynamics and spatial distribution of multiple phases, which are often involved and hard to obtain real-time performance. Recently, a diverse set of algorithms have been introduced to implement the complex multi-fluid phenomena based on the governing physical laws and novel discretization methods to accelerate the overall computation while ensuring numerical stability. By sorting through the target phenomena of recent research in the broad subject of multiple fluids, this state-of-the-art report summarizes recent advances on multi-fluid simulation in computer graphics.

We present a simple method for constructing patterns of Islamic geometric art. The method allows creating a parameterized set of motifs within a fundamental region of a periodic pattern. The constructed template motif will undergo the inner symmetries of a chosen symmetry group to obtain the content of the unit cell. The whole pattern is obtained by applying several linearly independent translations to the generated unit motif. We show how this method can be adapted to construct Islamic quasi-periodic patterns.

One of the long-standing goals of computer graphics is to generate realistic imagery. This realism is predicated, among other things, on having access to high- quality content to display, and being able to verify its realism. Unfortunately, realism and especially realism in procedural modeling are under-represented in current literature. Consequently, we address these two topics by investigating the definitions of general realism in computer graphics and by providing a basic framework for thinking and talking about realism in procedural modeling. In or- der to provide this framework with initial tangible data, we present a user study of the realism of procedural buildings. We find that realism of this specific class of procedural models is carried on different scales and conclude that authors of procedural rules for buildings need to beware of not only the fine details, but also the overall shape of the generated models. Finally, we present a method for growing procedural road networks in and close to cities. We use a traffic simula- tion and adapt existing research to grow cities over time. The cities are formed by letting several meaningfully positioned smaller settlements minor roads grow in step with additional major roads. computer graphics is a very active field, with new knowledge being published every day at a high rate. There is, therefore, the pressure to regularly review our teaching contents and adjust accordingly. Among the courses on a standard curriculum, the introductory computer graphics course is very often the door for students into the exciting area of computer graphics. It is also the opportunity to attract and engage the best talent for the field. In this paper, we address the question of content in the introductory computer graphics course as a community. Our main motivation was to find out what our peers are teaching in this first course and use this knowledge to ease the redesign of our introductory course. We have surveyed 28 introductory computer graphics undergraduate courses from higher level educational institutions from around the world. We have asked the instructors of these courses to send us data on their courses, such as the weekly list of topics, and others such as textbooks. We gathered and processed this data using a bottom-up approach. The final top-level list of subjects and percentages for the introductory computer graphics courses, following the knowledge units defined in the 2013 ACM/IEEE recommendation, is as follows: Rendering (71.3%), Geometric Modeling (17.4%), Animation (7.8%), Fundamentals (3.0%), and Visualization (0.5%). We believe this survey will be helpful for institutions considering designing a new introductory course from scratch or redesigning an existing one, by providing the current state-of practice of top computer graphics institutions around the world. The first major computer graphics text, Principles of Interactive computer graphics, 1 was inspired by a course, a research project, and a set of notes, all by Ivan Sutherland. In 1971, William Newman invited me to join forces to supplement his partial book draft with notes I had been writing. The book, which appeared in 1973, was received well, exceeding the sales projections of its publisher, McGraw-Hill. Between 1973 and 1977, William and I were research staff at the Xerox Palo Alto Research Center (PARC) working on tools for an "office of the future," focusing especially on interactive graphics and raster printing. We realized that raster displays and printers would soon dominate and would require mastering new techniques and adapting old ones. The second edition of our book, a complete rewrite, introduced some of the new technologies. This note is a story of the writing of the two editions of the book and it is also a story about how the editions were published in the era before commercial desktop publishing systems. In both the cases, we exploited and adapted computer tools of the time to do much of the publishing ourselves. For the second edition, we chose to use the illustration and printing tools we had developed at PARC to produce camera-ready copy. Especially significant was the use of the Press file format, an early page description language, to combine onto each page the various separate components prepared by different composition tools.
