As interests in Virtual Reality (VR) continue to rise, head-mounted displays (HMDs) are actively being developed. Current user authentication method in HMDs requires the use of virtual keyboard, which has low usability and is prone to shoulder surfing attacks. This paper introduces ExpressionAuth, a novel authentication method which uses face tracking capabilities in certain HMDs to verify the identity of the user. ExpressionAuth leverages smile as the expression for user verification. ExpressionAuth has the potential to be a secure and usable biometrics, achieving EER as low as 0.00178 and AUC of up to 0.999 in our experiments.

This paper presents relevant considerations about the challenges of integrating "preempt engineering" tools in the design and development of immersive systems. Thus, the contribution of this work is a general framework for the design and development of immersive systems using "pmmpt engineering" tools that use Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI). In other words, this proposal provides how to incorporate these tools into a traditional workflow of extreme programming agile methodology, establishing creative collaboration between the user and the GenAI tools. This work includes a concrete example of this dynamic interaction in developing a virtual reality experience for preparing specialty coffee using the V60 method. Thus, the development example shows the use of a set tool of GenAI, 'prompt" inputs used. their corresponding outputs. and how they are integrated into the final product at each stage of the process. Therefore, the recommendations and challenges presented in this document are based on the knowledge gained from this experience.

Redirected Walking (RDW) is an important intermediary layer in virtual reality (VR) interaction systems. It addresses the issues of spatial restrictions in VR exploration by imperceptibly remapping the virtual environment's movement to the physical environment, enhancing the user's immersive experience. In VR, jumping is also a noteworthy motion besides walking. However, existing redirected walking (RDW) algorithms typically focus on reducing collisions between users and obstacles during walking but overlook the safety when users perform significant actions such as jumping. This oversight can pose serious risks to users during VR exploration, especially when there are physical obstacles or boundaries near the virtual locations that require user jumping. We propose SafeRDW, the first RDW algorithm that takes the user's jumping safety into consideration. The proposed method considers both walking and jumping actions in the virtual environment, reducing physical resets and redirecting users to safer locations when a jump is required in the virtual space, ensuring user safety. Simulation experiments and user study results both show that our method not only reduces the number of resets, but also significantly ensures user safety when they reach the jumping points in the virtual scene.

This work presents the design and development process of an immersive experience applying a co-creation approach between humans and generative artificial intelligence tools. From the point of view of any user, Coffee Masterclass is an immersive experience that brings anyone to the art and pleasure of preparing specialty coffees. However, the Coffee Masterclass is the result of the inclusion of prompt engineering outputs in each stage of the building process. The co-creation approach is included in all development processes, i.e., from the narrative to the visual content generated through code writing, which has been co-created between the creative team and GenAI. This work tells details of this approach, including how the generative artificial intelligence tools were used in each stage of immersive experience development. This work shows the advantage of involvement in a development team of people with skills in prompt engineering and interaction with Large Language Models. Also, it includes recommendations to other development teams, including generative artificial intelligence tools by future developments.

Self-collision checking plays an important role in robot motion planning. In sampling-based motion planning methods, collision checking is performed multiple times, so this procedure should be accurate and fast. Collision checking is often addressed in robotics through the application of machine learning methods or a relatively straightforward multilayer perceptron within a low-dimensional feature space. In this paper, we focus on incorporating positional encoding, commonly utilized in computer graphics, into the input vector used in the binary classification task. We investigate the enhancement in classification accuracy by utilizing this technique in self-collision checking. Our findings indicate that positional encoding contributes to improved learning of high-frequency functions and provides a more accurate representation of higher-frequency details within the trained relation.

Rendering circles on digital platforms is essential in computer graphics. The widely adopted midpoint circle algorithm is a premier tool for this task. This article dives deep into the foundational aspects of this algorithm, highlighting its prowess in enabling accurate and effortless circle depiction on digital displays. It further contrasts its merits with alternative circle drawing techniques. Importantly, our research presents a refined technique aimed at minimizing inaccuracies inherent in the standard cartesian-based Midpoint Circle Drawing Algorithm (MPCDA). By incorporating an error-reduction strategy, we ensure greater accuracy in depicting circles. Comparative tests on diverse circle sizes and placements confirmed the efficacy of our enhanced method. When set against results from the traditional MPCDA, our approach showcases significant improvements.

Vector graphics are widely used in graphical designs and have received more and more attention. However, unlike raster images which can be easily obtained, acquiring high-quality vector graphics, typically through automatically converting from raster images, remains a significant challenge, especially for more complex images such as photos or artworks. In this paper, we propose SAMVG, a multi-stage model to vectorize raster images into SVG (Scalable Vector graphics). Firstly, SAMVG uses general image segmentation provided by the Segment-Anything Model and uses a novel filtering method to identify the best dense segmentation map for the entire image. Secondly, SAMVG then identifies missing components and adds more detailed components to the SVG. Through a series of extensive experiments, we demonstrate that SAMVG can produce high quality SVGs in any domain while requiring less computation time and complexity compared to previous state-of-the-art methods.

This work addresses the challenge of data scarcity in personality-labeled datasets by introducing personality labels to clips from two open datasets, ZeroEGGS and Bandai, which provide diverse fullbody animations. To this end, we present a user study to annotate short clips from both sets with labels based on the Five-Factor Model (FFM) of personality. We chose features informed by Laban Movement Analysis (LMA) to represent each animation. These features then guided us to select the samples of distinct motion styles to be included in the user study, obtaining high personality variance and keeping the study duration and cost viable. Using the labeled data, we then ran a correlation analysis to find features that indicate high correlation with each personality dimension. Our regression analysis results indicate that highly correlated features are promising in accurate personality estimation. We share our early findings, code, and data publicly.

While the effects of distractions have been widely studied in conventional settings, their impact in immersive virtual reality environments, particularly in educational contexts, remains less understood. This study investigates the nature and impact of distractions during a VR educational lecture. Eight participants engaged in a structured VR lecture, with auditory and visual stimuli introduced as potential distractions at predetermined intervals. Distraction recognition and its severity were self-reported by participants using a 7-point Likert scale. Preliminary findings indicated that external distractions such as the 'External Knock' and 'Phone Alert' interventions distracted fewer participants than anticipated. However, those distracted by the Phone Alert rated it as significantly disruptive. This pattern suggests that the degree of immersion may influence the impact of external distractions.
