Mediated perception systems are systems in which sensory signals from the user's environment are mediated to the user's sensory channels. This type of system has great potential for enhancing the perception of the user via augmenting and/or diminishing incoming sensory signals according to the user's context, preferences, and perceptual capability. They also allow for extending the perception of the user to enable them to sense signals typically imperceivable to human senses, such as regions of the electromagnetic spectrum beyond visible light. In this paper, we present a prototype mediated perception system that maps extrasensory spatial data into visible light displayed within an augmented reality (AR) optical see-through head-mounted display (OST-HMD). Although the system is generalized such that it could support any spatial sensor data with minor modification, we chose to test the system using thermal infrared sensors. This system improves upon previous extended perception augmented reality prototypes in that it is capable of projecting registered egocentric sensor data in real time onto a 3D mesh generated by the OST-HMD that is representative of the user's environment. We present the lessons learned through iterative improvements to the system, as well as a performance analysis of the system and recommendations for future work.

Providing directional guidance is important especially for exploring unfamiliar environments. However, most studies are limited to two-dimensional guidance when many interactions happen in 3D spaces. Moreover, visual feedback that is often used to communicate the 3D position of a particular object may not be available in situations when the target is occluded by other objects or located outside of one's field of view, or due to visual overload or light conditions. Inspired by a prior finding that showed users' tendency of scanning a 3D space in one direction at a time, we propose two-step nonvisual omnidirectional guidance feedback designs varying the searching order where the guidance for the vertical location of the target (the altitude) is offered to the users first, followed by the horizontal direction of the target (the azimuth angle) and visa versa. To investigate its effect, we conducted the user study with 12 blind-folded sighted participants. Findings suggest that our proposed two-step guidance outperforms the default condition with no order in terms of task completion time and travel distance, particularly when the guidance in the horizontal direction is presented first. We plan to extend this work to assist with finding a target in 3D spaces in a real-world environment.

In this paper, we present a psychophysical study exploring how spatialized sound affects perceptual detection thresholds for rotation gains during exposure to virtual environments with varying degrees of visibility. The study was based on a 2x3 factorial design, crossing two types of audio (no audio and spatialized audio) and three degrees of visibility (low, medium, and high density fog). We found no notable effects of sound spatialization or visibility on detection thresholds. Although future studies are required to empirically confirm that vision dominates audition, these results provide quantitative evidence that visual rotation gains may be robust to auditory interference. Furthermore, they suggest that rotation gains may be useful even when the virtual environment offers very limited visibility.

When users have only one free hand to operate smartphones, interaction with 3D virtual environment(VE) is restricted. We propose MagicCube, a cube with 5 DOF that perfectly integrates navigation and selection in 3D VE, to address this problem. Three sets of opposing faces are assigned to feature faces with translation, rotation, and selection. Any operation can be performed by dragging the corresponding face. Further, by rotating the cube, users can choose the displayed faces and adjust their relative position according to personal preference. A comparative analysis showed that it could effectively reduce the finger's visual occlusion as well as improve the accuracy and stability of interaction operations.

This paper presents a velocity guided amplification approach for head rotation in VR headsets, enabling the amplification factor to be dynamically changed according to head rotation velocity, and keep it within the comfort range. We first conducted experiments to investigate the effects of head rotation velocity on human sense towards the virtual view rotation and propose the velocity guided amplification approach. We then performed extensive evaluation by comparing our amplification method with existing linear mapping methods that use constant amplification factors. Results demonstrate that users achieve the best performance on given tasks with less discomfort when using our technique.

In comics, Textual Sound Effects (TE) can describe sounds, but also actions, events, etc. TE could be used in Virtual Environment to efficiently create an easily recognizable scene and add more information to objects at a relatively low design cost. We investigate the impact of TE in a Virtual Environment on objects' material perception (on category and properties) and on sound perception (on volume [dB] and spatial position). Participants (N=13, repeated measures) categorized metallic and wooden spheres and significantly changed their reaction time depending on the TE congruence with the spheres' material/sound. They then rated a sphere's properties (i.e., wetness, warmness, softness, smoothness, and dullness) and significantly changed their rating depending on the TE. When comparing 2 sound volumes, they perceived a sound associated with a shrinking TE as less loud and a sound associated with a growing TE as louder. When locating an audio source location, they located it significantly closer to a TE.

Increased reliance on data in decision-making has highlighted the importance of conveying uncertainty in data visualisations. Yet developing visualisation techniques that clearly and accurately convey uncertainty in data is an open challenge across a variety of fields. This is especially the case when visualising temporal uncertainty. To facilitate the development of innovative and accessible temporal uncertainty visualisation techniques and respond to an identified gap in the literature, we propose the first-ever survey of over 50 temporal uncertainty visualisation techniques deployed in numerous fields. Our paper offers two contributions. First, we propose a novel taxonomy to be applied when classifying temporal uncertainty visualisation techniques. This takes into account the visualisation's intended audience, as well as its level of discreteness in representing uncertainty. Second, we urge researchers and practitioners to use a greater variety of visualisations which differ in terms of their discreteness. In doing so. we believe that a more robust evaluation of visualisation techniques can be achieved.

We present the first deployment of an open, scalable and distributed spatial computing platform. We show in action its extensible protocols for discovering spatial services and spatial content in a geographic area, representing poses of real and virtual cameras and objects, exchanging content records, and interfacing with spatial computing services like visual localization. We also demonstrate the usage of the platform through a WebXR reference client in the first city-wide prototype testbed in Bari, Italy.

The process of sensemaking involves foraging through and extracting information from large sets of documents, and it can be a cognitively intensive task. A recent approach, the Immersive Space to Think (IST), allows analysts to browse, read, mark up documents, and use immersive 3D space to organize and label collections of documents. In this study, we observed seventeen novice analysts perform a historical analysis task in order to understand how users utilize the features of IST to extract meaning from large text-based datasets. We found three different layout strategies they employed to create meaning with the documents we provided. We further found patterns of interaction and organization that can inform future improvements to the IST approach.

Electronic transitions in molecules due to absorption or emission of light is a complex quantum mechanical process. Their study plays an important role in the design of novel materials. A common yet challenging task in the study is to determine the nature of those electronic transitions, i.e. which subgroups of the molecule are involved in the transition by donating or accepting electrons, followed by an investigation of the variation in the donor-acceptor behavior for different transitions or conformations of the molecules. In this paper, we present a novel approach towards the study of electronic transitions based on the visual analysis of a bivariate field, namely the electron density in the hole and particle Natural Transition Orbital (NTO). The visual analysis focuses on the continuous scatter plots (CSPs) of the bivariate field linked to their spatial domain. The method supports selections in the CSP visualized as fiber surfaces in the spatial domain, the grouping of atoms, and segmentation of the density fields to peel the CSP. This peeling operator is central to the visual analysis process and helps identify donors and acceptors. We study different molecular systems, identifying local excitation and charge transfer excitations to demonstrate the utility of the method.
