Correcting one's body posture is necessary when acquiring specific skills, especially for some sports such as skiing or gymnastics. However, it is difficult to observe our posture objectively, which is the reason why a trainer is required. In this paper, we introduce a VR ski training system using full body motion capture to provide realtime feedback for the user. Two types of different visual cues are developed and qualitatively compared in a user study. This system opens the opportunity to learn alpine skiing by oneself and also has a potential to be applied to other sports or skill acquisition.

Recently, projection mapping has become popular that it is used in various entertainments. In the research field, dynamic projection mapping has been studied to change the appearance of moving and deforming objects. Although it seamlessly connects the real world and the virtual world, complex equipment surrounds the object to achieve advanced projection and it is an unnecessarily visually disturbing factor. Furthermore, projection images are occluded when the target object is grasped and manipulated by hand. In this study, we propose a novel dynamic projection mapping with invisible projection devices with 3D images using a volumetric display and retro-transmissive optics.

Augmented reality headsets have great potential to transform the modern workplace as the technology improves. However, a major obstacle in bringing AR headsets into workplaces is the need for a precise, virtual, mid-air typing solution. Transitioning from physical to virtual keyboards is difficult due to loss of many physical affordances, such as the ability to tell between touching and pressing a key. We present our system, MusiKeys, as an investigation into the effects of presenting a user with auditory tones and effects as replacements for every kind of feedback that could ordinarily be perceived through touching a keyboard.

Speech-Based Prompting System to Assist with Activities of Daily living: A Feasibility Study

Background: The onset of dementia can negatively affect an individual's ability to perform activities of daily living (ADL). Consequently, these individuals rely on formal or informal caregivers for ADL completion. Cognitive assistive technologies (CATs) can help adults with dementia during ADL performance and potentially alleviate caregiver burden. However, sensors that are commonly used by CATs (i.e., cameras, accelerometers, radio frequency identification tags) have some limitations;they can cause erroneous activity detection if not positioned properly, installing them can be a long and expensive process, and their usage can raise privacy concerns. Objective: In this study, spoken dialogue was explored as an alternative method of providing input to CATs. The feasibility of using a speech-based CAT to assist with ADL performance was evaluated. Method: A speech-based intelligent prompting system for ADL assistance was developed. This system was a modification of the Cognitive Orthosis for Assisting with aCtivities in the Home (COACH), a CAT that was designed to assist with the ADL of handwashing. The camera-based hand-tracking sensor in the COACH was replaced with a speech-based conversational agent. A study with 10 healthy adults was conducted to test the feasibility of using speech instead of camera input for the COACH. Results were compared to the outcomes of a previous study with the camera-based COACH. Results: Results suggested that the speech-based COACH was able to identify completed task steps with 97.5% accuracy and true participant performance with 90% accuracy. In most cases, the performance of the COACH was not negatively affected by the use of speech in place of camera data. Conclusion: This study is a promising first step in exploring the application of speech in CATs designed for ADL assistance. Online learning has become an effective approach to reach students who may not be able to travel to university campuses for various reasons. Its use has also dramatically increased during the current COVID-19 pandemic with social distancing and lockdown requirements. But online education has thus far been primarily limited to teaching of knowledge and cognitive skills. There is yet almost no use of online education for teaching of physical clinical skills. In this paper, we present a shared haptic virtual environment for dental surgical skill training. The system provides the teacher and student with a shared environment containing a virtual dental station with patient, a dental drill controlled by a haptic device, and a drillable tooth. It also provides automated scoring of procedure outcomes. We discuss a number of optimizations used in order to provide the high-fidelity simulation and real-time performance needed for training of high-precision clinical skills. Since tactile, in particular kinaesthetic, sense is essential in carrying out many dental procedures, an important question is how to best teach this in a virtual environment. In order to support exploring this, our system includes three modes for transmitting haptic sensations from the user performing the procedure to the user observing.

The eventual success of many AR and VR intelligent interactive systems relies on the ability to collect user motion data at large scale. Realistic simulation of human motion trajectories is a potential solution to this problem. Simulated user motion data can facilitate prototyping and speed up the design process. There are also potential benefits in augmenting training data for deep learning-based AR/VR applications to improve performance. However, the generation of realistic motion data is nontrivial. In this paper, we examine the specific challenge of simulating index finger movement data to inform mid-air gesture keyboard design. The mid-air gesture keyboard is deployed on an optical see-through display that allows the user to enter text by articulating word gesture patterns with their physical index finger in the vicinity of a visualized keyboard layout. We propose and compare four different approaches to simulating this type of motion data, including a Jerk-Minimization model, a Recurrent Neural Network (RNN)-based generative model, and a Generative Adversarial Network (GAN)-based model with two modes: style transfer and data alteration. We also introduce a procedure for validating the quality of the generated trajectories in terms of realism and diversity. The GAN-based model shows significant potential for generating synthetic motion trajectories to facilitate design and deep learning for advanced gesture keyboards deployed in AR and VR.

Recent research indicates an impairment in decision-making in immersive Virtual Reality (VR) when completing the Iowa Gambling Task (IGT). There is a high potential for emotions to explain the IGT decision-making behavior. The design of a virtual environment (VE) can influence a user's mood and hence potentially the decision-making. In a novel user study, we measure decision-making using three virtual versions of the IGT. The versions differ with regard to the degree of immersion and design of the VE. Our results revealed no significant impact of the VE on the IGT and hence on decision-making.

New opportunities for immersive storytelling experiences have arrived through the technology in mobile phones, including the ability to overlay or register digital content on a user's real world surroundings, to greater immerse the user in the world of the story. This raises questions around the methods and freedom to interact with the digital elements, that will lead to a more immersive and engaging experience. To investigate these areas the Augmented Virtuality (AV) mobile phone application Home Story was developed for iOS devices. It allows a user to move and interact with objects in a virtual environment displayed on their phone, by physically moving in the real world, completing particular actions to progress a story. A mixed methods study with Home Story either guided participants to the next interaction, or offered them increased agency to choose what object to interact with next. Virtual objects could also be interacted with in one of three ways;imagining the interaction, an embodied interaction using the user's free hand, or a virtual interaction performed on the phone's touchscreen. Similar levels of immersion were recorded across both study conditions suggesting both can be effective, though highlighting different issues in each case. The embodied free hand interactions proved particularly memorable, though further work is required to improve their implementation, arising from their novelty and lack of familiarity.

In this study, we investigate potential relationships between avatar appearance and viewpoint within the context of low-cost motion tracking using Body and Mirror factors. Six experimental conditions were developed that combined Body and Mirror factors. In this between-groups design, participants were able to control their self-avatar by using HTC Vive controllers and trackers. Our results suggest a relationship between perceived similarity with the self-avatar and looking at the self-avatar.

This paper proposes a novel approach for analyzing search results of a document collection, which can help support know-what and know-who information seeking questions. Search results are grouped by topics, and each topic is represented by a two-mode network composed of related documents and authors (i.e., biclusters). We visualize these biclusters in a 2D layout to support interactive visual exploration of the analyzed search results, which highlights a novel way of organizing entities of biclusters. We evaluated our approach using a large academic publication corpus, by testing the distribution of the relevant documents and of lead and prolific authors. The results indicate the effectiveness of our approach compared to traditional 1D ranked lists. Moreover, a user study with 12 participants was conducted to compare our proposed visualization, a simplified variation without topics, and a text-based interface. We report on participants' task performance, their preference of the three interfaces, and the different strategies used in information seeking.
