In the field of healthcare education, including medical and nursing education, realistic and interactive simulations of various clinical scenes are required to mimic real-life situations, necessitating more than just a procedural experience. There has been a recent surge in demand for virtual/mixed reality (VR/MR) due to its advantages in providing diverse simulation environments. However, several challenges still remain to be addressed to advance to the next level of VR/MR-based clinical simulation. In this paper, I introduce the research that I have conducted on creating immersive clinical nursing scenes in VR/MR-based learning and training simulation systems, focusing on key elements such as multi-modal interaction, virtual agents, and learner performance assessment. Furthermore, I will discuss future research aimed at fostering collaboration in various healthcare fields, including nursing, and developing VR/MR simulation systems that enable learners to experience and learn from personalized clinical situations. These topics and questions will be further discussed at the IEEE VR 2024 Doctoral Consortium.

Depth perception, the ability to interpret an opponent's punches in terms of timing and distance, is fundamental for novice boxer training. Traditional methods rely on coach support and teamwork, leading to a high entry barrier for novice boxers to train whenever or wherever. To address this, we propose an immersive training system using virtual reality (VR) that integrates visual and audio guidance, specifically designed to enhance depth perception in boxing for novice boxers. Our rigorous experiment shows significant improvements in accuracy and reaction time. We introduce the system to professional boxing coaches, enabling them to integrate a systematic approach to training novice boxers' depth perception.

Mixed reality technology has the potential to transform healthcare, notably through advanced intraoperative applications such as insitu surgical guidance and virtual surgical displays. However, the adoption of MR in operating rooms faces several hurdles, including technical limitations, regulatory barriers, and challenges centered around user experiences. This paper examines these multifaceted issues, exploring the advantages and limitations of MR in surgery, the reasons for its slow adoption, and strategies to accelerate its integration. We pinpoint essential areas for future research, focusing on how MR influences the dynamics and workflows of surgical teams, and discuss both the potential solutions it offers and the new challenges it introduces. We conclude that MR can significantly enhance surgical practices but overcoming obstacles and altering workflows require gradual, evidence-based changes to ease adoption.

Virtual reality technology is providing a new method for psychological relaxation training, but most systems focus primarily on meditation as a singular relaxation method. We propose a novel virtual reality relaxation system called TaoRelax. Building upon traditional Taoist culture, the system integrates both meditation and progressive muscle relaxation training. It combines electromyography (EMG) as a means of feedback and assessment during training, providing users with a dual experience of relaxation for both body and mind. Our preliminary results indicate that after training in our system, participants experienced a significant reduction in psychological stress and a notable improvement in meditation abilities.

Techniques to grasp targeted objects in realistic and diverse ways find many applications in computer graphics, robotics and VR. This study generates diverse grasping motions while keeping plausible final grasps for human hands. We first build on a Transformer-based VAE to encode diverse reaching motions into a latent representation noted as GMF and then train an MLP-based cVAE to learn the grasping affordance of targeted objects. Finally, through learning a denoising process, we condition GMF with affordance to generate grasping motions for the targeted object. We identify improvements in our results, and will further address them in future work.

Exposure to Virtual Reality (VR) is typically multisensory, incorporating sensory information from several modalities. In this context, the congruency between cross-modal feedback plays a crucial role in enhancing user experience and minimising potential discomfort. Whilst some studies have investigated the visuo-vestibular relationship in VR exposure, the exploration of congruency has often been limited in scope. In this paper, we present early work exploring the role of visuo-vestibular congruency on virtual-reality experiences. This investigation is carried out through a user-based study, evaluating human factors and how they are impacted by congruency conditions. Our initial results highlight some interesting insights, with visually-congruent conditions heightening perceived sickness and presence levels. Furthermore, motion simulation appears to be a useful tool for cybersickness mitigation in older VR users.

Tooth preparation is a fundamental treatment technique to restore oral function in prosthodontic dentistry. This technique is complicated as it requires the preparation of an abutment while simultaneously predicting the ideal shape. We explore the feasibility of using Augmented Reality (AR) Head-Mounted Displays (HMDs) to assist dentists during tooth preparation using two different visualization techniques. A user study (N=24) revealed that AR is effective for angle adjustment, and reduces the occurrence of over-reduction. These results suggest that AR can be used to assist physicians during these procedures and has the potential to enhance the accuracy and safety of prosthodontic treatment.

Hazardous Material (HAZMAT) decontamination training is essential for hospital staff but is often constrained and subject to change due to limited hospital space and the availability of trainees. Virtual Reality (VR) offers a safe and cost-effective solution;however, the authoring of training scenarios, including the sequence and timing of stages, can be cumbersome due to subtle setting changes. This paper proposes a rapid prototyping tool designed to facilitate the convenient authoring of VR training scenarios. A 2D map-like authoring tool is proposed for scene modelling and an agent-based 2D simulation to simulate the training steps. The tool is interactive, providing an overall view and immediate training simulation that aids in the efficient creation and modification of training prototypes.

Setting up a new numerical control program is a difficult and tedious task that can cause costly errors. Diagnostic information is commonly presented as abstract numerical data. Collaboratively with machine operators, we designed, implemented and evaluated Augmented Reality guidance methods based on their insights. A visual milling path trajectory was chosen for further evaluation. Results indicate that this path preview can decrease error detection time, increase detection rate, and enhance user confidence compared to a typical 2D machine panel. Users quickly noticed errors in paths, while errors related to milling depth were slower to detect.
