Platforms for interior DIY(Do It Yourself) design should hold sufficient realistic sense and light manual operation in interior modeling, besides more flexibility and adaptation of online editing are also essential. But current pure Web3D or pure image based platforms are hardly meet those goals. Therefore this paper presents a lightweight and immersive solutions by editing virtual 3D furniture into captured 2D interior pictures interactively, placing them at the optimal location automatically and rendering them in real time to consistently harmonize them with real interior pictures in terms of geometric layout and lighting visual effects. Our contributions consist in: (1)cuboid modeling from camera captured interior pictures interactively without loss of realistic sense and with light manual operation;(2)lightweight automatic furniture arrangement method with enough flexibility and adaptation for online editing;(3)lightweight IBL(Image Based Lighting) and PBR(Physic Based Rendering) to make virtual furniture immerse into real interior image more visually authentic. Compared with those existing online systems, this solution can provide low-cost, convenient, pervasive online services for interior DIY design over mobile Internet.

This paper describes the development of custom built interface between a force-replicating Virtual Reality (VR) haptic glove, and a user. The ability to convey haptic information- both kinesthetic and tactile- is a critical harrier in creating comprehensive simulations. Haptic interface gloves can convey haptic information. but often the haptic signal is diluted by sensory noise. miscuing the users brain. Our goal is to convey compelling interactions with virtual objects, such as grasping, squeezing, and pressing by improving one such haptic interface glove- the Sense Glove- through a redesign of the user-glove interface- Soft Glove. The redesign revolves around three critical design factors- comfort., realism. and performance and three critical design areas- thimble/fingertip. palm. and haptic feedback. This paper introduces the redesign method and compares the two designs with a quantitative user study. The benefit of the Improved Soft Glove can be shown by a significant improvement of the design factors.

Calibration is a key step for on-vehicle AR-HUD systems to ensure the augmented information to be correctly viewed by the driver. State-of-art calibration methods require setting up of spatial tracking devices or attaching markers on vehicles, which is time-consuming and error-prone. In this paper, we present a novel multi-viewpoints calibration method for AR-HUD using only a mixed reality glasses such as HoloLens. The full calibration process can be done in one minute and provides high precise calibration result, while no markers need to be attached on vehicle.

Managing one's own healthcare has been progressively changing from occurring at hospitals and healthcare facilities to one's own day to day living environment. Due to this change, studying how people care for themselves becomes more challenging as visiting people in their living environments is intrusive and often logistically challenging. LiDAR scanning technology allows for highly detailed capture and generation of 3D models. With proper rendering software, virtual reality (VR) technology enables the display of LiDAR models in a manner that provides immersion and presence of feeling like one is situated in a scanned model. This document describes the combination of using LiDAR and VR technology to enable the study of health in the home. A research project involving the study of how home context affects diabetic patients' ability to manage their health information in the home is presented as an example. The document finishes by discussing other potential health care applications that could use similar methodologies as those introduced to improve health in the home for additional chronically ill populations.

We propose an innovative method to navigate in a virtual environment by adapting the acceleration parameters to users in real time, in order to reduce cybersickness. Indeed, navigation parameters for most navigation interfaces are still determined by rate-control devices. Inappropriate parameter settings may lead to strong sickness, making the application unusable. Past research found that especially accelerations should not be set too high. Here, we define the accelerations as a function of a cybersickness indicator: the Electro-Dermal Activity (EDA). A pre-study was conducted to test the effectiveness of our approach and showed promising results where cybersickness tends to decrease with our adaptive navigation method.

Multimodal interfaces for Virtual Reality (VR), e.g., based on speech and gesture input/output (I/O), often exhibit complex system architectures. Tight couplings between the required I/O processing stages and the underlying scene representation and the simulator system's flow-of-control tend to result in high development and maintainability costs. This paper presents a maintainable solution for realizing such interfaces by means of a cherry-picking approach. A reusable multimodal I/O processing platform is combined with the simulation and rendering capabilities of the Unity game engine, allowing to exploit the game engine's superior API usability and tool support. Both digital and physical 3D models of buildings as well as historical photographs of architecture are used for a wide range of needs, from research in humanities and information technologies, museum contexts and library studies, to touristic applications. Spatially oriented photographs play an important role in visualizing and browsing contemporary as well as historical architecture, starting with the ground-breaking Photo Tourism project [4]. We present a technique to combine physical 3D models of buildings with spatially registered historical photographic documents in a hand-held Augmented Reality (AR) environment. Users are enabled to spatially explore historical views of architecture by selecting photos from a collection of images which are then utilized as textures for the physical model rendered on their respective mobile device. We compare different methods to select photos registered to a physical model in hand-held AR.

The goal of the VAST Challenge 2018 Mini Challenge 2 (MC 2) was to unveil the possible causes and effects of environmental pollution in the Boonsong Lekagul Wildlife Preserve. We propose the ViCCEx (Visual Chemical Contamination Explorer) system that enables to interactively explore the sparse multivariate river network sensor reading dataset to identify characteristics, trends, and outliers of the different sensor reading locations over time. The ViCCEx system uses a t-SNE projection to display an overview visualization, a sampling strategy view to highlight the overall sampling strategies of different chemical measurements at each sensor location, and various extracted statistics to highlight the evolution of chemical measurements. The three views are connected via linking and brushing, which enables to explore and identify possible pollution causes and effects in the preserve.
