This study aims at ascertaining the applicability of a virtual reality environment (VRE) to sports training. Hitting an incoming object is one of the most common actions in various ball games, in which players are required to move to a suitable position and hit the object in a split second;this is a complicated task requiring spatio-temporal reaction to the object. Due to this complexity, how a VRE can serve as a training environment still remains an open question. In the work reported in this paper, we investigated the idea of substituting a VRE for an actual environment for training on the task of hitting a baseball. By focusing on the batter's temporal behavior with real and virtual environments, we clarified factors that contribute to the batter's reaction. This helped us understand how training VREs can be effectively utilized and the VRE requirements needed for sports training.

In contrast to traditional retail stores, online shopping offers many advantages, such as unlimited opening hours and a stronger focus on functionality. But this is accompanied by a complex categorization, limited product visualization and immersion. Virtual Reality (VR) has the potential to create new shopping experiences that combine the advantages of e-commerce sites and conventional brick-and-mortar shops. We examined the main features of online and offline shops in terms of buying behavior and customer frequency. Further-more, we designed and implemented an immersive WebVR online purchasing environment and aimed to retain the benefits of online shops, such as search functionality and availability, while focusing on the shopping experience and immersion. This VR shop prototype was evaluated in a case study with respect to the Virtual Reality Shopping Experience (VRSE) model. The next step is to classify, investigate and evaluate the next generation of VR shops, including product interaction and navigation techniques, as well as store and product representations.

Completing text analysis tasks is a continuous sensemaking loop of foraging for information and incrementally synthesizing it into hypotheses. Past research has shown the advantages of using spatial workspaces as a means for synthesizing information through externalizing hypotheses and creating spatial schemas. However, spatializing the entirety of datasets becomes prohibitive as the number of documents available to the analysts grows, particularly when only a small subset are relevant to the task at hand. StarSPIRE is a visual analytics tool designed to explore collections of documents, leveraging users' semantic interactions to steer (1) a synthesis model that aids in document layout, and (2) a foraging model to automatically retrieve new relevant information. In contrast to traditional keyword search foraging (KSF), "semantic interaction foraging" (SIF) occurs as a result of the user's synthesis actions. To quantify the value of semantic interaction foraging, we use StarSPIRE to evaluate its utility for an intelligence analysis sensemaking task. Semantic interaction foraging accounted for 26% of useful documents found, and it also resulted in increased synthesis interactions and improved sensemaking task performance by users in comparison to only using keyword search.

We present 3De lens, a technique for focus+context visualization of multi-geometry data. It fuses two categories of lenses (3D and Decal) to become a versatile lens for seamlessly working on multiple geometric representations that commonly coexist in 3D visualizations. In addition, we incorporate our lens into virtual reality as it enables a natural style of direct spatial manipulation for exploratory 3D data analysis. To demonstrate its potential use, we discuss two domain examples in which our lens technique creates customized visualizations of both surfaces and streamlines.

We present a technique that conveys the uncertainty in the secondary structure of proteins-an abstraction model based on atomic coordinates. While protein data inherently contains uncertainty due to the acquisition method or the simulation algorithm, we argue that it is also worth investigating uncertainty induced by analysis algorithms that precede visualization. Our technique helps researchers investigate differences between multiple secondary structure assignment methods. We modify established algorithms for fuzzy classification and introduce a discrepancy-based approach to project an ensemble of sequences to a single importance-weighted sequence. In 2D, we depict the aggregated secondary structure assignments based on the per-residue deviation in a collapsible sequence diagram. In 3D, we extend the ribbon diagram using visual variables such as transparency, wave form, frequency, or amplitude to facilitate qualitative analysis of uncertainty. We evaluated the effectiveness and acceptance of our technique through expert reviews using two example applications: the combined assignment against established algorithms and time-dependent structural changes originating from simulated protein dynamics.

In conventional virtual reality systems, users usually do not perceive and recognize the experience as reality. For example, users of a virtual disaster simulator know, consciously or unconsciously, that the presented disaster is not real, which inherently limits the training effect. To make the virtual experience more believable, we propose a novel real-virtual transiton technique that preserves the sense of "conviction about reality" in a virtual environment. This is realized by spatio-temporal smooth transition from the real environment to the virtual environment with omnidirectional video captured in advance at the user's position. Our technique requires less preparation cost and presents a more believable experience compared to existing transition techniques using a handmade 3D replica of the real environment. In this article, reported are the concept of our technique, a prototype system and a preliminary user study that has shown the effectiveness of the technique.

We describe our analysis of VAST Challenge 2018 Mini-Challenge 1. Our approach combines automatic analysis and interactive exploration. We improve user interaction and introduce new views to support analysis. At the same time, we design a convolutional neural network in order to compute a classifier of bird-singing audio files. The classifier and the interactive exploration tool are used to answer some of the challenge questions. Our analysis suggest that the audio files are most probably not of Pipits and, moreover, if there are Pipits among them, they are represented in minority. This finding indicates a need for further investigation.

ScatAR is an augmented reality (AR) audio application, where scattering delay networks (SDNs) efficiently generate and organize a reverberator based on room geometry scanned by an AR device. Here we present a perceptual evaluation of the application in terms of auditory object presence. Specifically, we investigate the personal preferences on the auditory registration of a sounding object (a drone transmitting speech) in a room in anechoic versus artificial reverberation conditions. The results indicate a marginal preference of the reverberation, but much less than what we have anticipated. We discuss possible reasons for this, and set to compare our SDN implementation with a Waveguide Web (WGW) simulation in AR. While the WGWs are computationally more demanding, they have a potential to provide more accurate second-order reflections, and therefore, better registering of audio-visual AR scenes.

Engineers of the research project "Digital Product Life-Cycle" are using a graph-based design language to model all aspects of the product they are working on. This abstract model is the base for all further investigations, developments and implementations. In particular at early stages of development, collaborative decision making is very important. We propose a semantic augmented knowledge space by means of mixed reality technology, to support engineering teams. Therefore we present an interaction prototype consisting of a pico projector and a camera. In our usage scenario engineers are augmenting different artefacts in a virtual working environment. The concept of our prototype contains both an interaction and a technical concept. To realise implicit and natural interactions, we conducted two prototype tests: (1) A test with a low-fidelity prototype and (2) a test by using the method Wizard of Oz. As a result, we present a prototype with interaction selection using augmentation spotlighting and an interaction zoom as a semantic zoom.

Extensive research on social media usage during emergencies has shown its value to provide life-saving information, if a mechanism is in place to filter and prioritize messages. Existing ranking systems can provide a baseline for selecting which updates or alerts to push to emergency responders. However, prior research has not investigated in depth how many and how often should these updates be generated, considering a given bound on the workload for a user due to the limited budget of attention in this stressful work environment. This paper presents a novel problem and a model to quantify the relationship between the performance metrics of ranking systems (e.g., recall, NDCG) and the bounds on the user workload. We then synthesize an alert-based ranking system that enforces these bounds to avoid overwhelming end-users. We propose a Pareto optimal algorithm for ranking selection that adaptively determines the preference of top-k ranking and user workload over time. We demonstrate the applicability of this approach for Emergency Operation Centers (EOCs) by performing an evaluation based on real world data from six crisis events. We analyze the trade-off between recall and workload recommendation across periodic and realtime settings. Our experiments demonstrate that the proposed ranking selection approach can improve the efficiency of monitoring social media requests while optimizing the need for user attention.
