human-centered computing has at its core the idea that humans are central to many of the things we create and use computers to do. On a recent trip to Haiti, I began to rethink my own perspective on computing - what, exactly, are computers and computing for? computing is and should be about amplifying people - to be more of what we think of as "human". Not only can computing amplify intelligence - it can amplify compassion, communication, understanding, and creativity - and even transform people and our society. Programming languages like Alice, Scratch, and Snap and the creation of serious games highlight the importance of leveraging creativity to inspire the next wave of transformative innovation in computing. In this talk I'll lead in with this idea and give an overview of my work including: my new course on the Beauty and Joy of computing, the STARS Alliance for broadening participation, creating games for education, exercise, and energy, and using data to personalize learning experiences.

This paper introduces a differential network biology for discovering tumor migration. We applied statistical methods to prioritize PPI candidates and an in situ proximity ligation assay to verify 67 endogenous PPIs among 21 interlinked pathways in two hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) cells, Huh7 (minimally migratory cells) and Mahlavu (highly migratory cells). Differential network biology analysis was applied to determine the novel interaction, CRKL-FLT1, has a high centrality ranking, and the expression of this interaction is strongly correlated with the migratory ability of HCC and other cancer cell lines. Knockdown of CRKL and FLT1 in HCC cells leads to a decrease in cell migration. This study demonstrated that functional exploration of a disease network with differential network in interlinked pathways via PPIs can be used to discover tumor migration.

The complexity of human-centered computing systems demands novel computing models that are capable of integrating various processes or algorithms into a working system with high scalability, which requires a transparent distributed architecture. This paper presents a task-oriented computing share model for the generalization of different processes, which provides a Quality of Service strategy for selecting a suitable computing resource. This model allows a system to be extended to specific applications without any consideration for common low-layer data processing. We also provide a methodology for designing an application related to talent training and management.

In this paper, we provide a survey of the traffic sign detection literature, detailing detection systems for traffic sign recognition (TSR) for driver assistance. We separately describe the contributions of recent works to the various stages inherent in traffic sign detection: segmentation, feature extraction, and final sign detection. While TSR is a well-established research area, we highlight open research issues in the literature, including a dearth of use of publicly available image databases and the over-representation of European traffic signs. Furthermore, we discuss future directions of TSR research, including the integration of context and localization. We also introduce a new public database containing U.S. traffic signs.

The cognitive sciences are increasingly coming to terms with the embodied, embedded, extended, and experiential aspects of the mind. Exemplifying this shift, the enactive approach points to an essential role of goal-directed bodily activity in the generation of meaningful perceptual experience, i.e., sense-making. Here, building on recent insights into the transformative effects of practical tool-use, we make use of the enactive approach in order to provide a definition of an enactive interface in terms of augmented sense-making. We introduce such a custom-built interface, the Enactive Torch, and present a study of its experiential effects. The results demonstrate that the user experience is not adequately captured by any standardly assumed perceptual modality;rather, it is a new feeling that is mediated by the design of the device and shaped by the overall situation of the task. Taken together these findings show that there is much to be gained by synergies between engineering and the cognitive sciences in the creation of new experience-centered technology. We suggest that the guiding principle should be the design of interfaces that serve as a transparent medium for augmenting our natural skills of interaction with the world, instead of requiring conscious attention to the interface as an opaque object in the world.

Educators in medicine, psychology, and the military want to provide their students with interpersonal skills practice. Virtual humans offer structured learning of interview skills, can facilitate learning about unusual conditions, and are always available. However, the creation of virtual humans with the ability to understand and respond to natural language requires costly engineering by conversation knowledge engineers (generally computer scientists), and incurs logistical cost for acquiring domain knowledge from domain experts (educators). We address these problems using a novel crowdsourcing method entitled human-centered Distributed Conversational Modeling. This method facilitates collaborative development of virtual humans by two groups of end-users: domain experts (educators) and domain novices (students). We implemented this method in a web-based authoring tool called Virtual People Factory. Using Virtual People Factory, medical and pharmacy educators are now creating natural language virtual patient interactions on their own. This article presents the theoretical background for human-centered Distributed Conversational Modeling, the implementation of the Virtual People Factory authoring tool, and five case studies showing that human-centered Distributed Conversational Modeling has addressed the logistical cost for acquiring knowledge. Numerous efforts seek to increase awareness, interest, and participation in scientific and technological fields at the precollege level. Studies have shown these students are at a critical age where exposure to engineering and other related fields such as science, mathematics, and technology greatly impact their career goals. A variety of advanced learning technologies have emerged to enhance learning, promote hands-on experiences, and increase interest in engineering. However, creating and sustaining technology-infused learning environments at the precollege level is a challenging task, as many schools have limited resources and expertise. Moreover, while numerous technology solutions are available to support ambitious engineering-learning goals, choosing the right technology to align to program goals and resources may be a daunting task. In this work, we fill the gap between the applicability of educational implements and suitable teaching methods for precollege engineering. We present an overview of available hardware- and software-based technologies, and characterize these technologies based on criteria such as median price, the type of learning activities fostered, and the required users' expertise levels. In addition, we outline how these technologies align with deductive and inductive teaching methods that emphasize direct-instruction, inquiry-, problem-, and project-based methods, as studies have shown these methods are effective for precollege engineering education.

Social Web applications have successfully transformed content consuming users into content producers. Aside of socializing, these applications are frequently used to disseminate information and coordinate purposeful activities, such as disaster response, political action, and neighborhood organizations. These activities are carried out via human interpreted messages. In many cases, dedicated information processing spaces would better serve such needs. Unfortunately, a typical Web user is not able to create even very simple applications, as they require significant technical know-how. This work proposes an approach towards creating simple collaborative applications. The approach, called WeFlow, proposes a collaborative application specification, an application generator, and an execution engine. The WeFlow framework is presented with focus on the implementation issues. A case study, where users report and track accessibility violations, is presented for demonstration purposes.

Internet has become the largest repository for documents. PDF documents distribution through Internet is prevalent, as the cost is almost zero. At present, files are mostly downloaded from the Internet and users go through cursorily over entire document and then they decide to store it in their hard disk or not. To facilitate the user-document interaction, a novel document distribution technique is proposed. The proposed method creates lean documents that contain only entities that would aid the user's decision making process, while the rest are replaced with aesthetically pleasing pseudo-text. The proposed lean documents will not only have less file size, they significantly reduce the cognitive and Internet resources requirement.
