Highly sensitive and selective biomarker detection is required for early detection of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Disease progression has been shown to correlate with specific fucosylation of a validated HCC serum glycoprotein biomarker, alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) Carbohydrate binding proteins, such as lectins, can be used as diagnostic indicators for monitoring glycosylation changes during disease progression in hepatitis B virus (HBV) or hepatitis C virus (HCV) infected patients. We prepared surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) substrates, which provide controllable, well-organized nanoparticles on the surface, for the analysis of a fucose binding lectin AAL. The SERS based assay provides fast (<10 s), and reproducible (<5% variation) detection.

Digital Ecosystems (DEST) have emerged with the purpose of enhancing communications among small and medium enterprises (SMEs) within the worldwide Business Ecosystem. However, because of the diversity and heterogeneity of the services in the DEST environment, existing commercial products or research outputs cannot be directly applied to this field so as to fulfill the requirements of SMEs. human-centered computing has been applied to many areas, such as social classification, community-based ontology evolution, and more importantly, human-centered systems. In this paper, we propose a framework for a human-centered semantic service platform, in order to address the issue in the DEST environment. This framework incorporates the features of human-centered metadata publishing, maintenance and clustering, community-based ontology revolution and human-centered service retrieval, evaluation and ranking. To thoroughly validate the framework, we implement a prototype in the transport service domain, and conduct a series of evaluation experiments on the basis of this prototype.

Multicontext team decision making under time stress is an extremely challenging issue faced by various real-world application domains. In this paper, we employ an experience-based cognitive agent architecture (called R-CAST) to address the informational challenges associated with military command and control (C-2) decision-making teams, the performance of which can be significantly affected by dynamic context switching and tasking complexities. Using context switching frequency and task complexity as two factors, we conducted an experiment to evaluate whether the use of R-CAST agents as teammates and decision aids can benefit C-2 decision-making teams. Members from a U. S. Army Reserve Officer Training Corps organization were randomly recruited as human participants. They were grouped into ten human-human teams, each composed of two participants, and ten human-agent teams, each composed of one participant and two R-CAST agents, as teammates and decision aids. The statistical inference of experimental results indicates that R-CAST agents can significantly improve the performance of C-2 teams in multi-context decision making under varying time-stressed situations.

The authors describe a low-power, battery-free tag for use in pervasive sensing applications such as wearable patient-monitoring systems and body sensor networks. The tag consists of a custom integrated circuit, an antenna for RF energy harvesting, and several sensors for monitoring important physiological parameters and generating alarms when necessary. They also describe experimental results with phonocardiogram and photoplethysmogram signals and demonstrate tag localization within 0.6 m by using an audio localization scheme.

This paper addresses a context-awareness handoff planning mechanism in heterogeneous wireless networks for seamless ubiquitous access. The proliferation of digital devices with communication capability heralds the era of ubiquitous computing, as predicted by Mark Weiser. Mobile devices with multi-mode interfaces can access heterogeneous wireless networks, such as wireless local area network (WLAN), worldwide interoperability for microwave access (WiMAX) network and third generation (3G) network. In heterogeneous wireless networks, different network provides different network capability, transmission range, data rate, access cost, security policy and quality of service. Therefore, a ubiquitous access aims to provide users intelligent human-centric context-aware handoff mechanism in heterogeneous wireless networks at anytime anywhere is gradually become an important issue. Optimal handoff planning in heterogeneous wireless networks considers the needs of users, accessing service and the surrounding context. However, most of existing handoff mechanisms only considered few contexts that lead to not able to select the most suitable network for individual user. In this paper, we propose a human-centric context-aware solution to access most appropriate network that satisfies individual user's requirement, fulfills seamless data transmission and reduces handoff delay. We develop two integrated approaches for context-awareness handoff planning mechanisms, namely MADM approach and GA approach. The MADM approach contains initial process and decision process. Initial process weights context by Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) method while decision process selects the most appropriate network by Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS). The GA approach uses Genetic Algorithm to minimize handoff under given QoS constraints. Performance of proposed mechanisms is evaluated under different services with different QoS considerations. Understanding the human-computer interface factors that influence users' behavior with virtual humans will enable more effective human-virtual human encounters. This paper presents experimental evidence that using a mixed reality display configuration can result in significantly different behavior with a virtual human along important social dimensions. The social dimensions we focused on were engagement, empathy, pleasantness, and naturalness. To understand how these social constructs could be influenced by display configuration, we video recorded the verbal and non-verbal response behavior to stimuli from a virtual human under two fundamentally different display configurations. One configuration presented the virtual human at life-size and was embedded into the environment, and the other presented the virtual human using a typical desktop configuration. We took multiple independent measures of participant response behavior using a video coding instrument. Analysis of these measures demonstrates that display configuration was a statistically significant multivariate factor along all dimensions.

The hands are highly suited to interact with large public displays. It is, however, not apparent which gestures come naturally for easy and robust use of the interface. We first explored how uninstructed users gesture when asked to perform basic tasks. Our subjects gestured with great similarity and readily produced gestures they had seen before;not necessarily in a human-computer interface. In a second investigation these and other gestures were rated by a hundred subjects. A gesture set for explicit command-giving to large displays emerged from these ratings. It is notable that for a selection task, tapping the index finger in mid-air, like with a traditional mouse, scored highest by far. It seems that the mouse has become a metaphor in everyday life.

The process of education and innovation often involves individuals, whose expertise lies in diverse fields. Informal communication amongst them can prove to be invaluable towards their collaboration, but rarely does it extend beyond one's already established social circle. This paper proposes SIREN, a system, which makes use of sensor nodes to detect encounters between colleagues in their workplace, as they undertake their daily tasks and spreads information virally from one to another. The aim is to introduce a channel of informal communication that is not disruptive to their routine. We developed a system prototype and conducted a field test to detemine whether the premise of encounter-based information sharing offers any added value over information sharing without discrimenation, amongst users in the same work setting. The results indicate that SIREN can help break down barriers and promote subsequent direct communication between users.

Due to the increasing availability and sophistication of data recording techniques, multiple information sources and distributed computing are becoming the important trends of modern information systems. Many applications such as security informatics and social computing require a ubiquitous data analysis platform so that decisions can be made rapidly under distributed and dynamic system environments. Although data mining has now been popularly used to achieve such goals, building a data mining system is, however, a nontrivial task, which may require a complete understanding on numerous data mining techniques as well as solid programming skills. Employing agent techniques for data analysis thus becomes increasingly important, especially for users not familiar with engineering and computational sciences, to implement an effective ubiquitous mining platform. Such data mining agents should, in practice, be intelligent, complete, and compact. In this paper, we present an interactive data mining agent - OIDM (online interactive data mining), which provides three categories (classification, association analysis, and clustering) of data mining tools, and interacts with the user to facilitate the mining process. The interactive mining is accomplished through interviewing the user about the data mining task to gain efficient and intelligent data mining control. OIDM can help users find appropriate mining algorithms, refine and compare the mining process, and finally achieve the best mining results. Such interactive data mining agent techniques provide alternative solutions to rapidly deploy data mining techniques to broader areas of data intelligence and knowledge informaties.
