Many advantages of microwave ablation over the other ablative therapies in the field of liver tumor ablation have driven researchers to develop innovative interstitial microwave antennas to effectively treat deep seated, nonresectable hepatic tumors. A new coaxial antenna for microwave ablation therapies has been proposed in this research paper. Two dimensional axisymmetric Finite Element Method (FEM) has been used to design and measure the results of the proposed antenna. Objective metrics for assessing the size and shape of a ablation zone and S11 for efficiency of antenna has been specified and verified for the proposed antenna. The dependence of antenna performances on possible changes in the antenna's structure has also investigated for finding the stability and highlighting the fundamental role played by the antenna's split tip. The novel antenna results depicts that with reflection coefficient -27 dB, the antenna is well matched and having capability of creating spherical ablation zones up to 2 cm in radius using 60 Watt input power at 2.45 GHz proves that it is able to produce good performance parameters.

Over the last few years, significant strides have been made toward enhancing the naturalness and acceptance of multimedia systems through the principles of human-centered Multimedia computing (HCMC), a field of computational science where user needs, expectations, adoption and adaptation preferences guide interface and system design. While progress has greatly benefited the broader "able" population, those with disabilities are largely ignored, and must often force-fit available solutions or wait for add-on features that only partially solve usability issues. Given the diversity of disabilities, a person-centered rather than human-centered approach is needed. Previously, we proposed enriching the design philosophy of HCMC by considering perspectives from disabilities. More recently, we have proposed Person-centered Multimedia computing (PCMC) to emphasize individual user needs and co-adaptive systems. In this paper, we present an interdisciplinary approach to realizing person-centered accessible technologies. The basis of the approach is three complementary research thrusts: human-centered design, socio-personal dynamics, and socio-technological practices. These research thrusts are interconnected through three perspectives of disability research: technology, adaptation and policy. The results of several case studies will be presented to highlight how this approach has aided the development of person-centered accessible technologies from early conceptualization to commercialization.

Simulating human-centered pervasive systems requires accurate assumptions on the behavior of human groups. Recent models consider this behavior as a combination of both social and spatial factors. Yet, establishing accurate traces of human groups is difficult: current techniques capture either positions, or contacts, with a limited accuracy. In this paper we introduce a new technique to capture such behaviors. The interest of this approach lies in the unprecedented accuracy at which both positions and orientations of humans, even gathered in a crowd, are captured. From the mobility to the topological connectivity, the open-source framework we developed offers a layered approach that can be tailored, allowing to compare and reason about models and traces. We introduce a new trace of 50 individuals on which the validity and accuracy of this approach is demonstrated. To showcase the interest of our software pipeline, we compare it against the random waypoint model. Our fine-grained analyzes, that take into account social interactions between users, show that the random waypoint model is not a reasonable approximation of any of the phenomena we observed.

On a recent trip to Haiti, I began to rethink my own perspective on computing - what, exactly, are computers and computing for? computing is and should be about amplifying people - to be more of what we think of as "human". Not only can computing amplify intelligence - it can amplify compassion, communication, understanding, and creativity - and even transform people and our society. Programming languages like Alice, Scratch, and Snap and the creation of serious games highlight the importance of leveraging creativity to inspire the next wave of transformative innovation in computing. In this talk I'll lead in with this idea and give an overview of my work including: my new course on the Beauty and Joy of computing, the STARS Alliance for broadening participation, creating games for education, exercise, and energy, and using data to personalize learning experiences.

As wells are drilled deeper, the external pressures applied to well casing become greater. Conventional America Petroleum Institute (API) casing strength cannot meet the strength criteria of high pressure, high temperature, and high H2S (HPHTHS) gas wells which are called "3-high" gas wells. When high collapse casing (HCC) is applied in oil fields, it has obviously improved collapse properties in excess of API ratings. HCC shows a very high resistance to tension load, internal pressure, and collapse, as well as being highly resistant to sulfide stress corrosion cracking (SSCC), and it also can be used for deep and sour gas and oil fields. For imperfections of the API 5C3 collapse formula, the joint API/ISO work group ISOTC67 SC5 WG2b have proposed the current API Bulletin 5C3, and a new collapse strength model with manufacturing imperfections, such as ovality, eccentricity, residual stress, etc., improves the casing strength calculation accuracy and increases the benefits for casing strength design, rather than just using API Bulletin 5C3. The study on the new ISO collapse model has found that it is inappropriate to predict the collapse strength of the high collapse casing. As a result, on the basis of my work group results, a new high collapse model for predicting the collapse strength of all HCC has been presented. Numerical and experimental comparisons show that the "new high collapse model" predicts higher accuracy than that of ISO, and this will make great improvements in the casing design of deep and ultradeep wells on the basis of HCC material safety, which was guaranteed.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is one of the most common causes of cancer-related death worldwide. Due to the difficulties of early diagnosis, curative treatments are not available for most patients. Palliative treatments such as chemotherapy are often associated with low response rate, strong adverse effects and limited clinical benefits for patients. The alternative approaches such as fermented wheat germ extract (FWGE) with anti-tumor efficacy may provide improvements in the clinical outcome of current therapy for HCC. This study aimed to clarify antitumor efficacy of FWGE and the combination drug effect of FWGE with chemotherapeutic agents, cisplatin and 5-fluorouracil (5-Fu) in human HCC cells, HepG2, Hep3B, and HepJ5. The present study indicated that FWGE exhibited potential to suppress HepG2, Hep3B, and HepJ5 cells, with the half maximal inhibitory concentrations (IC50) of FWGE were 0.494, 0.371 and 1.524mg/mL, respectively. FWGE also induced Poly (Adenosine diphosphate ribose) polymerase (PARP) associated cell death in Hep3B cells. Moreover, the FWGE treatment further enhanced the cytotoxicity of cisplatin in all tested HCC cells, and cytotoxicity of 5-Fu in a synergistic manner in HepJ5 cells. Collectively, the results identified the anti-tumor efficacy of FWGE in HCC cells and suggested that FWGE can be used as a supplement to effectively improve the tumor suppression efficiency of cisplatin and 5-Fu in HCC cells.

Background. Despite improvement in treatment, the prognosis of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) remains disastrous. Cancer stem cells (CSCs) may be responsible for cancer malignant behaviors. ATP-binding cassette, subfamily G, member 2 (ABCG2) is widely expressed in both normal and cancer stem cells and may play an important role in cancer malignant behaviors. Methods. The expression of ABCG2 in HCC tissues and SMMC-7721 cells was examined, and the relevance of ABCG2 expression with clinical characteristics was analyzed. ABCG2+ and ABCG2- cells were sorted, and the potential of tumorigenicity was determined. Expression level of ABCG2 was manipulated by RNA interference and overexpression. Malignant behaviors including proliferation, drug resistance, migration, and invasion were studied in vitro. Results. Expression of ABCG2 was found in a minor group of cells in HCC tissues and cell lines. ABCG2 expression showed tendencies of association with unfavorable prognosis factors. ABCG2 positive cells showed a superior tumorigenicity. Upregulation of ABCG2 enhanced the capacity of proliferation, doxorubicin resistance, migration, and invasion potential, while downregulation of ABCG2 significantly decreased these malignant behaviors. Conclusion. Our results indicate that ABCG2 is a potential CSC marker for HCC. Its expression level has a close relationship with tumorigenicity, proliferation, drug resistance, and metastasis ability.

The aim of this study is to explore the inhibitory effects of RNA interference (RNAi) targeting NET-1 or combined with sorafenib on HCC in vitro and in vivo and the possible underlying mechanisms. The expressions of NET-1 mRNA and protein were detected by RT-QPCR and western blot. The ability of proliferation was determined by CCK-8 assay. Apoptosis was examined by flow cytometry (FCM). Abilities of migration and invasion were measured by scratch-wound assay and transwell assay. MHCC97H cells with stable transfection of NET-1shRNA were injected subcutaneously to prepare nude mice model of HCC and Caspase-3, Caspase-8, and Caspase-9 mRNAs of tumor tissues in different groups were examined. NET-1 mRNA and protein were reduced sharply in MHCC97H cells transfected with NET-1shRNA. The abilities of proliferation and migration were inhibited and apoptosis was promoted in either NET-1shRNA or sorafenib as compared with untreated cells in vitro and in vivo (P < 0.05). The mRNA levels of caspase-3, caspase-8, and caspase-9 of tumor tissues were reduced in different treatment groups compared with untreated group, particularly in combination group. (P < 0.05). The combination NET-1shRNA with sorafenib dramatically enhanced the effects of sorafenib antitumor, which may involve in blocking ras signaling pathway and stimulating apoptotic pathways simultaneously.

This paper introduces a differential network biology for discovering tumor migration. We applied statistical methods to prioritize PPI candidates and an in situ proximity ligation assay to verify 67 endogenous PPIs among 21 interlinked pathways in two hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) cells, Huh7 (minimally migratory cells) and Mahlavu (highly migratory cells). Differential network biology analysis was applied to determine the novel interaction, CRKL-FLT1, has a high centrality ranking, and the expression of this interaction is strongly correlated with the migratory ability of HCC and other cancer cell lines. Knockdown of CRKL and FLT1 in HCC cells leads to a decrease in cell migration. This study demonstrated that functional exploration of a disease network with differential network in interlinked pathways via PPIs can be used to discover tumor migration.

This paper presents a task-oriented computing share model for the generalization of different processes, which provides a Quality of Service strategy for selecting a suitable computing resource. This model allows a system to be extended to specific applications without any consideration for common low-layer data processing. We also provide a methodology for designing an application related to talent training and management.
