Nursing education plays a crucial role in preparing future nurses to provide high-quality patient care. To ensure its effectiveness, it is imperative to instruct nursing students in discerning patient signs/symptoms using a range of sensory modalities. Moreover, pairing nursing students with expert preceptors offers a highly effective means of providing valuable feedback and mentorship. In this paper, we propose a novel Augmented Reality (AR) simulation framework for effective clinical nursing education with multimodal signs/symptoms and a preceptor agent to provide guidance/instruction. Using the proposed framework, we developed an AR nurse training system that resembles practical clinical nursing environments.

Recent work investigated Group Locomotion Techniques (GLTs), which enable the viewpoint of several users to be updated simultaneously with pairs of users and simulated agents. We present a user study with four-user teams in which we compared two different GLTs during a search task in a large virtual environment (VE). Parabola-Based Group Jump allows one to select the future position with a parabola-based ray cast, and the World-in-Miniature (WiM) Group Teleport enables instant teleportation on a miniature model view of the VE. Participants were asked to find and assemble objects scattered in the VE while remembering its spatial configuration, with a subsequent task to reproduce it on paper individually and as a group. Our results show that spatial awareness increased over time, with both GLTs resulting in comparable scores, but group scores were better than individual ones. In addition, we saw an indication that the position of the individual user in the VE can influence their spatial awareness. Users preferred both GLTs to be available for navigation, although they predominantly usedWiM Group Teleport.

Virtual reality (VR) is an immersive medium that offers users a unique opportunity to experience a digital environment realistically. As the demand for VR content continues to grow, the importance of effective VR editing techniques becomes increasingly apparent. This paper is a pioneering work investigating the effects of jump cuts on the viewer's sense of presence, viewing experience, and edit quality in cinematic VR. Specifically, this work focuses on using the 30-degree and 180-degree rules in VR editing to minimize the adverse effects of jump cuts. We conducted a user study with thirteen participants, who watched nine different VR edits and completed a survey for each edited video. Our results indicate that employing the 30-degree and 180-degree rules in VR editing can significantly improve the sense of presence, viewing experience, and edit quality while mitigating the negative effects of jump cuts. We provide valuable insights for VR content creators and editors to achieve more effective and immersive VR experiences.

This position paper outlines a study on the influence of avatars displaying warmth or coldness cues on interpersonal space in virtual reality. Participants will engage in a comfort-distance task, approaching avatars exhibiting thermoregulatory behaviors. Anticipated findings include a reduction in interpersonal distance with warm cues and an increase with cold cues. The study will offer insights into the complex interplay between temperature, social perception, and interpersonal space.

In this paper, we explore how navigation performance and experience in a real-world indoor environment is impacted after learning the route from various guide cues in a replicated immersive virtual environment. A guide system, featuring two distinct audiovisual guide representations-a human agent guide and a symbol-based guide-was developed and evaluated through a preliminary user study. The results do not show significant differences between the two guide conditions, but offer insight into the user-perceived confidence and enjoyment of the real-world navigation task after experiencing the route in immersive virtual reality. We discuss the results and direction of future research.

The integration of Augmented Reality (AR) with the external ventricular drain (EVD) procedure improves catheter placement accuracy by providing guidance to surgeons through a visualization of the brain ventricular anatomy and other contextual information. However, the junior trainees often require feedback about their EVD performance during the AR-assisted EVD procedure. Therefore. we present an AR-assisted neurosurgical training tool for EVD that provides a personalized assessment of the trainees' EVD performance. We use a sensing-integrated brain phantom model to compute catheter placement accuracy, surgical task recognition to identify trainees' ongoing surgical tasks in real time, and provide accuracy scores, performance scores, and text feedback. Our user study with 16 medical and 12 non-medical students shows that the personalized assessment helped them improve the distance to target by 36.6% and 31.7% accordingly during a more challenging case of EVD procedure. Furthermore, most of the students agreed that the scores and assessment feedback given by our system were helpful in improving their EVD pertOrmance.

This study explores the integration of Ultra-Wideband (UWB) technology into Mixed Reality (MR) Systems for immersive storytelling. Addressing the limitations of existing technologies like Microsoft Kinect and HTC Vive, the research focuses on overcoming challenges in robustness to occlusion, tracking volume, and cost efficiency in props tracking. Utilizing UWB technology, the interactive MR system enhances the scope of performance art by enabling larger tracking areas, more reliable and cheaper multi-prop tracking, and reducing occlusion issues. Preliminary user tests suggest meaningful improvements in immersive experience, promising a new possibility in Extended Reality (XR) theater, performance art and immersive game.

As Extended Reality (XR) technologies continue to mature, they offer ever more diverse, complex, and impactful experiences. This paper presents "Therapet", an augmented reality (AR) application designed for AR glasses such as the Hololens 2. Therapet presents an interactive therapeutic pet avatar-using both Volumetric Video (VV) recordings and traditionally animated rigged models-with which users can interact with by feeding, playing fetch, and petting. We conducted a pilot study to investigate usability and user preferences, revealing positive user experiences and insights into the use of (and perceptions towards) Volumetric Video based avatars for interactive AR experiences. Furthermore, we analyze the feasibility of using VV in production (where memory usage and performance are critical factors) and discuss lessons learned to create a successful AR therapeutic pet application.

Genuine experiences where users feel a deep level of connection are the key quality of room-scale virtual reality (VR). The freedom to move promises natural sensory experiences stimulating a feeling of presence. However, users differ in their eagerness to move, some prefer movement by teleportation while others would keep walking forever. Such individual differences challenge the inclusive design necessary for bestseller applications. In this methodological research contribution, we propose to study user behavior and experience using parametric maps based on general linear models (GLM) to overcome limitations of traditional data aggregation techniques. In the investigated study, participants explored invisible mazes touching hidden walls for brief moments of visual guidance. We demonstrate that experienced presence correlated with where participants spent time exploring the VR. We found an increase in presence coinciding with participants being less likely to collide with invisible walls and spending more time in segments critical for navigational success.

Frank Rosenblatt's 1958 demonstration of the Mark I Perceptron captured public and media attention alike. However, an analysis of a New York Times report from the day of the event suggests a gap between media portrayal and the actual technical achievements. This discrepancy highlights the difficulty of conveying the nuances of emerging technologies through media, often leading to misconceptions about their capabilities. This paper explores the possibilities of using information theory to analyze the mechanisms of such system-based communicational mismatches, particularly in the context of the AI alignment problem.
