We present a system that enhances Virtual Avatars with Reality Actuators in order to allow them to interact with the real world. We demonstrate this idea by overlaying a 3D avatar onto a robotic arm engaged in a game of chess. We think that using Virtual Avatar to hide the action of reality actuators provides an improved experience through better presence, social presence, and engagement and allows for a more seamless interaction between real and virtual objects.

The study aimed to investigate the allocation of covert attention in a social context in virtual reality (VR) by manipulating the type of social cues and the sociality of the object on which the target appeared;in a modified Posner cueing task, a virtual avatar pointed to the left or right using its hand or head as a cue, and the target appeared on a social (another avatar) or nonsocial object on either side of the avatar according to the cue validity. To use the cueing effect as the dependent variable, the RTs were calculated as the Invalid condition minus the Valid condition. The results showed no significant main effect of cue type, indicating that there was no difference in the presentation of cues between hands and heads in VR. Conversely, a significant main effect of object type was observed. Posthoc tests revealed that the cueing effect was significantly stronger for nonsocial objects than social objects. These results suggest that the sociality of objects can significantly impact the allocation of covert attention in social contexts.

Augmented reality (AR) simulations in virtual reality (VR) provide fully controlled conditions, fewer hardware limitations than on AR devices, and convenient and safe access to diverse settings. However, for VR to be a fully realistic simulator for optical see-through (OST) AR, it must replicate the effects of environmental context on virtual content appearance and system performance. Here we examine one example of this, the perceived transparency of virtual content under varying environment illuminance, and conduct a user study (N=8) to identify the discrepancy between AR and a standard VR simulation. Our results show that for virtual content designed to be transparent, perceived transparency in AR is greatly reduced at low levels of illuminance, but remains consistently high across all illuminance levels tested in VR. This illustrates the impact of environment properties on the efficacy of AR simulations in VR, and motivates the development of context-aware simulations that more closely replicate AR experiences.

Food waste presents a substantial challenge with significant environmental and economic ramifications, and its severity on campus environments is of particular concern. In response to this, we introduce FoodWise, a dual-component system tailored to inspire and incentivize campus communities to reduce food waste. The system consists of a data storytelling dashboard that graphically displays food waste information from university canteens, coupled with a mobile web application that encourages users to log their food waste reduction actions and rewards active participants for their efforts. Deployed during a two-week food-saving campaign at The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) in March 2023, FoodWise engaged over 200 participants from the university community, resulting in the logging of over 800 daily food-saving actions. Feedback collected post-campaign underscores the system's efficacy in elevating user consciousness about food waste and prompting behavioral shifts towards a more sustainable campus. This paper also provides insights for enhancing our system, contributing to a broader discourse on sustainable campus initiatives.

Deaf adults often rely on sign language interpreters and real-time captioners for language access during healthcare consultations. While deaf adults generally prefer that these access services be offered in person, previous studies have described that many healthcare providers frequently resort to employing video remote interpreting (VRI) or remote captioning services because of the lack of locally available qualified interpreters or captioners and because of a shorter turnaround time for availing these services. VRI equipment typically consists of a tablet mounted on a utility cart, whereas captions are usually displayed on handheld tablets. These approaches present visibility and cognitive challenges for deaf adults who then need to divide their attention between the interpreting or captioning display and the healthcare provider, thereby affecting their ability to thoroughly access health information shared during consultations. This study proposes augmented reality (AR) smart glasses as an alternative to traditional VRI and remote captioning services for optimizing communication access in healthcare settings. A descriptive study about the perspectives of deaf adults (N = 62), interpreters (N = 25), and captioners (N = 22) on using a smart glasses application for language access in healthcare and biomedical settings are discussed. Results showed that deaf adults who primarily use sign language interpreting and interpreters prefer onsite language access services but identified the benefits of implementing a smart glasses application whenever onsite access services are unavailable or not feasible. Additionally, deaf adults who rely primarily on captioning and captioners prefer the smart glasses application over traditional captioning methods.

Whilst the visual arts is a very practical and tangible field, data visualisation is a combination of programming skills, data science and design theory. Each of these can be taught in a variety of ways, from traditional methods of lectures to technical programming classes or even asynchronous worksheets. The challenge is how to cover all of the required content within the constraints of the teaching period, environment, delivery method and ensuring the appropriate activities and assessment tasks. In this paper we reflect on the past 8 years of delivering the postgraduate unit 'Data Exploration and Visualisation' at Monash University. We present the four different ways that the same content has been taught to different cohorts, through a combination of on-campus lectures, large-format workshops, small group tutorials and online or hybrid tutorials and workshops, as well as various readings, videos and asynchronous activities. We explain the different external and internal requirements set for the teaching and describe the adaption of the teaching methods and assessments in order to meet these conditions. We reflect on our experiences of teaching multiple methods across different formats from very small to very large student cohorts.

Visual analytics tools can help illustrate the spread of infectious diseases and enable informed decisions on epidemiological and public health issues. To create visualisation tools that are intuitive, easy to use, and effective in communicating information, continued research and development focusing on user-centric and methodological design models is extremely important. As a contribution to this topic, this paper presents the design and development process of the visual analytics application ESID (Epidemiological Scenarios for Infectious Diseases). ESID is a visual analytics tool aimed at projecting the future developments of infectious disease spread using reported and simulated data based on sound mathematical-epidemiological models. The development process involved a collaborative and participatory design approach with project partners from diverse scientific fields. The findings from these studies, along with the guidelines derived from them, played a pivotal role in shaping the visualisation tool.

There have been extraordinary advances in our ability to collect, analyze, and interpret vast amounts of data which have transformed the fundamental nature of artificial intelligence (AI). The human aspects of AI, including how to support creativity and human insight without violating individual rights, how to address ethical concerns, and the consideration of societal impacts, have received less attention. Yet these human issues are becoming increasingly vital to the future of AI. Dr. Aragon will reflect on a 30-year career in data science and AI in industry, government, and academia, discuss what it means for AI to be both rigorous and human-centered, and speculate upon future directions for data science and AI.

In recent years, the surge in society's use of information and communication technology solutions has increased the importance of software sustainability. Despite increasing attention and publications in this field, challenges persist due to the newness of the domain and the ambiguity surrounding a common definition of sustainability. The complexity of software sustainability extends to its categorization and effects, including first-order impacts from software production and broader consequences on global systems. Sustainability challenges are also noted when users interact with the software, which identifies the gap in user-focused perspectives and models integrating sustainability evaluation. To address this, my thesis aims to achieve four objectives over four years: (1) investigate the incorporation of user perspectives in current software sustainability practices, (2) explore user perceptions regarding software sustainability, (3) co-design a conceptual framework to integrate user perspectives into software sustainability evaluation and (4) empirically validate the framework. The thesis plan involves a mixed-method approach including systematic literature reviews, interviews, questionnaires, empirical evaluations, and participatory design. My preliminary findings reveal research gaps on the user perspective in software sustainability, emphasizing the need for further investigation and the potential impact of this research on software sustainability and user experience. The result of this research has the potential to assist software engineers in considering the user perspective when designing for sustainability in software systems.

Rapid prototyping is an affordable and efficient method to explore novel designs for extended reality (XR) hardware and interactions. Prototyping is especially advantageous for smartphone-based virtual reality (VR) design as the hardware is inherently low-cost. The advancement of mobile VR hardware and interactions is an underrepresented area of research that has great potential to improve the inclusion of XR devices. Prototyping provides an opportunity for designers to explore potential solutions to mobile VR interaction and hardware in an efficient and cost-effective manner. In this work, we reflect on our experiences in prototyping a low-fidelity VR input device for mobile VR and identify a three-phase iterative process for prototyping low-fi VR input devices. We encourage members of the community to adopt this process to explore novel methods for low-fi VR hardware and interactions.
