Interaction in immersive virtual reality can be enhanced by merging physical objects with virtual stimuli, thus creating extended reality scenarios. Such approaches could be exploited to implement physical obstacle avoidance and to provide the missing haptic feedback when touching, grasping, and manipulating objects. Effective solutions rely on the correct detection and tracking of the 6DOF pose of the objects and the accurate 3D reconstruction of the physical elements. Here, we focus on the latter aspect, analyzing different 3D reconstruction techniques to create and segment the meshes necessary to merge the physical objects with virtual counterparts. We consider six 3D reconstruction software and six different furnished rooms, analyzing the time necessary to create the 3D mesh from scratch, the reconstruction success rate, and the percentage of volume shift between the real objects and the reconstructed ones. The quantitative results show several off-the-shelf 3D reconstruction techniques that can be used as input for the considered extended reality system. Although fine 3D reconstruction and meshes are not necessary, the considered techniques can catch the sizes of the real objects in the scene and can be used to create virtual environments coherently aligned with the real ones.

As real-life social interactions transition to virtual environments using Virtual/Augmented Reality (VR/AR) technologies, understanding how gender representation in virtual avatars affects choices and behaviors becomes increasingly relevant. In this paper, we investigate the combined impact of avatars' gender representation and their owner's gender on virtual partner selection in physical, intellectual, social, and romantic scenarios. We introduce our preliminary research plan, outlining both the study design and system development. The research will contribute to our understanding of social dynamics and gender effects in avatar-mediated interactions.

Group discussions are important for exploring new ideas. One method to support discussions is presenting relevant keywords or images. However, the context of the conversation and information tended not to be taken into account. Therefore, we propose a system that develops group discussions by presenting related information in response to discussions. As a specific example, this study addressed academic discussions among HCI researchers. During brainstorming sessions, the system continuously transcribes the dialogue and generates embedding vectors of the discussions. These vectors are matched against those of existing research articles to identify relevant studies. Then, the system presented relevant studies on the large display with summarizing by an LLM. In a case study, this system had the effect of broadening the topics of discussion and facilitating the acquisition of new knowledge. A larger display area is desirable in terms of information volume and size. Therefore, in addition to large displays, virtual reality environments with headsets could be suitable for this system.

This paper presents a mid-air imaging optical system consisting of two dimensionally arranged truncated cylindrical optical elements. The proposed system aims to reduce the impact of stray light and improve the limited viewing range of mid-air images in micromirror array plates, an existing mid-air imaging optical system. In this study, we used ray tracing to assess mid-air images formed by our proposed optical system. The results show that our method is practical in terms of the invisibility of stray light and brightness of the image when viewed from an angle.

This study proposes an experience graph, a Mixed Reality (MR) experience replaying method for recording and playing spatially adaptive interaction in a mixed reality environment. Many MR immersive interactions are experienced in a space different from the original recorded space, so it is important to adaptively experience the interaction in the local space. As a solution to the collision and mismatch during the interactions in local space, there is research on scene generation or adaptive object placement, but the change of interactions dependent on space and the resulting experience transformation were not considered. This study structures spatial information and dependent interactions into an experience graph and proposes a spatial adaptive replay method that minimizes interaction deformation. Recorded interactions are evaluated quantitatively through loss rate and transformation rate, played interactions are evaluated qualitatively through user experiments, and finally, indicators important to the user experience are reflected in the experience graph. Utilizing the results of this study will contribute to experiencing immersive spatial MR where users actively record and share spatial experiences beyond the limitations of time and space.

Animating performances for story-based games is a difficult and labor-intensive task. Although much research in animation and intelligent agents has focused on the problem of generating animation from textual descriptions, this work explores a novel approach through the use of a Large Language Model (LLM) that animates non-player characters with personality and emotions. The proposed approach thus reduces the typical authoring and setup requirements. As a proof of concept, we demonstrate the approach within a point-and-click narrative game.

AR games can offer a distinct and immersive experience set apart from traditional games. When creating AR games, one of the most formidable challenges faced by designers lies in the unpredictability of real-world environments, making it difficult to seamlessly integrate virtual world with the player's surroundings. Our approach addresses this challenge by converting the designer's design and the player's real environment into scene graphs, and then integrating the two graphs to determine the placement of virtual objects. In addition, we provide a user-friendly interface for designers to quickly visualize inspirations, and an integration module for naturally arranging virtual objects.

This paper introduces an innovative educational virtual reality (VR) experience aimed at immersing users in the complexities of spherical geometry. Focused on spherical triangles, navigation methods, and map projections, the VR journey offers an interactive platform for learning about Earth's unique geometry. Users engage in modules that explore the properties of spherical triangles, challenges in earth navigation, and the intricacies of map projections, providing them with insights into geodesics and their practical applications. An innovative calculator is designed that allows users to use a spaceship's control system for doing calculations, thus creating a more intuitive and engaging experience.

This study primarily focuses on developing a training and assistance framework that utilizes Extended Reality (XR) technologies, encompassing Augmented Reality (AR), Mixed Reality (MR), and Virtual Reality (VR). The objective is to facilitate intuitive learning of new work methodologies and enhance technical skills through task-oriented strategies in planning, execution, and production. Central to this paper are five VR-based scenarios, which are a subset of 22 diverse use cases explored in a collaborative effort with four Austrian universities. The research methodology entailed a thorough assessment of the existing training practices within participating companies, leading to the creation of tailored, interactive prototypes through a cyclic development process. These prototypes underwent rigorous on-site testing and evaluation by the employees of the industrial partners, employing a comprehensive multi-criteria evaluation model. The feedback gathered was instrumental in gauging the efficacy of these novel training approaches in comparison to conventional methods, and in pinpointing elements of the use cases that could be standardized for future development of training applications. This paper makes a significant contribution to the domain by shedding light on the practical implementation of XR technologies in industrial training environments, and by discussing the potential advantages and challenges inherent in their adoption.

This paper introduces a novel methodology for collecting and validating non-verbal behavioural data in virtual reality (VR) environments. Focused on addressing the complexities of behavioural prediction in VR, our approach integrates a machine learning (ML) model and a human subject-based validation process. The ML model is tested across diverse tasks to evaluate its accuracy in capturing subtle behavioural nuances, while the human validation aspect provides a unique cross-reference, ensuring the reliability of the re-enacted avatar behaviours. Central to our methodology is the emphasis on ethical considerations in data handling, aligning with current legislative standards and best practices. This innovative approach enhances the precision of behavioural data collection in VR and offers valuable insights for designing more interactive and user-centric VR systems, particularly in education and marketing contexts.
