Within XR design, prototypes play an essential role in materializing, communicating and evaluating concepts. Yet, selecting the appropriate prototype proves intuitive for seasoned designers but daunting for beginners and the non tech-savvy. Addressing the right challenges when making decisions on the prototyping method is vital for a constructive outcome. Taxonomies emerge as powerful tools in this context. We forge a holistic taxonomy based on various prototyping taxonomies in the contexts of XR and other disciplines. We further validate it by surveying existing XR prototyping work. Next, we will further validate it through a series of steps common in such research.

Virtual humans play a crucial role in elevating user experiences in Virtual Reality (VR). Despite ongoing technological advancements, achieving highly realistic virtual humans with entirely natural behaviors remains a challenge. This paper explores how the appearance and voice realism of virtual humans influence communication effectiveness within social VR scenarios. Our preliminary results indicate the significant impact of alterations in appearance and voice realism on communication effectiveness. We observe that a cross-modal realism mismatch between appearance and voice can hamper effective communication. This research provides valuable insights for designing virtual humans and improving the quality of social communication in VR environments.

This paper introduces an innovative approach to manga colorization within augmented reality (AR) environments, focusing on the unique challenges posed by colorizing photos of manga books. We present a novel method using diffusion models to generate a synthetic dataset that accurately replicates photographed manga pages. Additionally, we have compiled a dataset of real manga photographs, capturing diverse environmental conditions. Integrating these datasets, we established a comprehensive benchmark to evaluate colorization models in scenarios that simulate AR applications. This benchmark was validated through a human study, confirming the accuracy of our metrics across both datasets. We also showed that domain adaptation may improve model performance. Paving the way for practical applications, our framework enables the creation of an AR application designed to execute manga colorization effectively.

Millions of people have seen their daily habits transform, reducing physical activity and leading to mental health issues. This study explores how virtual characters impact motivation for well-being. Three prototypes with cartoon, robotic, and human-like avatars were tested by 22 participants. Results show that animated virtual avatars, especially with extended reality, boost motivation, enhance comprehension of activities, and heighten presence. Multiple output modalities, like audio and text, with character animations, improve the user experience. Notably, the cartoon-like character evoked positive responses. This research highlights virtual characters' potential to engage individuals in daily well-being activities.

Redirected walking (RDW) allows users to explore virtual spaces larger than physical spaces while preserving a natural walking sensation. Expanding the range of visual manipulation gains that can be applied without causing discomfort is necessary to apply RDW in practice. Ankle tendon electrical stimulation (TES) has the potential to expand the range by inducing body tilt sensation and body sway. Therefore, in this study, we proposed a locomotion method that applies ankle TES to RDW. In the experiment, we evaluated how ankle TES affects the detection threshold (DT), which is the maximal gain at which visual manipulation is not noticed. The results indicated that the DT was expanded when TES was applied to induce the body tilt sensation in the same direction as the RDW's visual manipulation. Specifically, the pooled mean of the DT was expanded by more than 18%.

Training is a costly and time-consuming task, especially in industrial environments. Self-learning methods, customized curriculum, mixed reality (MR), and automation in the training process can have great societal impact. However, the preparation of new educational materials will pose additional challenges which could hinder the technology adaptation. In this demo, we propose a novel platform exploiting various AI technologies to facilitate and accelerate the creation of training applications, especially in MR environments. An expert needs to perform and explain a complex process only once and our system automatically generates a step-by-step tutorial including video snippets and textual descriptions.

Lumbar puncture is a necessary staple of pediatric diagnostic medicine. We developed VirtuaLP, an immersive training system for infant lumbar puncture that runs on a standalone extended reality headset, allowing for a more accessible and flexible training experience. We provide a suite of visual hints to guide the student through the procedure. Additionally, VirtuaLP provides feedback on each component of insertion accuracy, including ideal position, depth, and angle.

When people interact with virtual characters, the character's nonverbal cues can change the user's perception of and engagement with it. In this work, we investigate the impact of virtual agent locomotion and emotional posture on user engagement, as measured by subjective questionnaires and EEG signals. We found the EEG-based engagement index was significantly lower in the postural agent condition, which was opposite to the questionnaire-based engagement result. From these results, we differentiate social engagement from task engagement and discuss their influence on overall perceived engagement.

Virtual Reality (VR) offers new ways to interact that are different from usual communication in the real world. In VR, avatars are key displays for showing users' feelings and personalities non-verbally. Addressing the need for more convenient and continuous expression representation, we introduce a novel method for facial expression transfer in VR. This method integrates camera systems with photoreflective sensors embedded in eyewear, overcoming the limitations of traditional camera-based tracking. By offering smoother tracking and reducing manual calibration needs, this approach highlights the potential of multimodal technology to enhance non-verbal communication in virtual environments. Building on this, we demonstrated the example implementation of smile transfer and discussed future direction.

In virtual reality (VR), hand redirection (HR) has been proposed to enhance the flexibility of haptic feedback. HR takes advantage of the dominance of visual signals over proprioception signals in hand movements, which is achieved by shifting the posture and position of the virtual hand from its physical posture and position. The user does not notice this manipulation within a certain range, but the discomfort becomes apparent when the manipulation is applied beyond a certain range. Given that attention plays a pivotal role in the sensory integration of vision and proprioception, we hypothesized that interventions targeting the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC), a region associated with attention, could modulate the effects of HR. This study assessed HR detection thresholds (DTs) during left DLPFC intervention using transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS). Anodal stimulation was applied to enhance left DLPFC activity, and DTs were measured before and after the stimulation. A sham stimulation condition served as a control. In both stimulation conditions, we systematically varied the magnitude of HR from -20 deg (leftward shift) to 20 deg (rightward shift). Based on a user study, our findings revealed that DTs for leftward shifts significantly increased in the sham condition, likely due to habituation. Interestingly, tDCS effectively mitigated this increase in DTs. These results suggest that tDCS may reset the effects of HR habituation or enhance attention for HR.
