For many applications. remote guidance and telerobotics provide great advantages. For example, tele-ultrasound can bring much-needed expert healthcare to isolated communities. However, existing tele-guidance methods have serious limitations. A new concept called human teleoperation leverages mixed reality, haptics, and high-speed communication to provide tele-guidance that is more. tightly coupled than existing methods yet more accessible than telerobotics. This paper provides an overview of the human teleoperation concept and its application to tele-ultrasound. The concept and its impact are discussed, the graphics, communications, controls, and haptics subsystems are explained, and results are presented that show the system's efficacy. These include tests of the communication architecture, of human performance in tracking mixed reality signals, and of human teleoperation in a limited clinical use-case. The results show good potential for teleultrasound. as well as possible other applications of human teleoperation including remote maintenance, inspection, and training.

Recent research based on hand-eye coordination has shown that gaze could improve object selection and translation experience under certain scenarios in AR. However, several limitations still exist. Specifically, we investigate whether gaze could help object selection with heavy 3D occlusions and help 3D object translation in the depth dimension. In addition, we also investigate the possibility of reducing the gaze calibration burden before use. Therefore, we develop new methods with proper gaze guidance for 3D interaction in AR, and also an implicit online calibration method. We conduct two user studies to evaluate different interaction methods and the results show that our methods not only improve the effectiveness of occluded objects selection but also alleviate the arm fatigue problem significantly in the depth translation task. We also evaluate the proposed implicit online calibration method and find its accuracy comparable to standard 9 points explicit calibration, which makes a step towards practical use in the real world.

Immersive experiences can increase engagement and improve data understanding. We explore the use of virtual reality to visualise the complexities of electric networks and facilitate a greater understanding of net zero initiatives. We propose that an abstract metaphorical immersive experience can provide an intuitive overview of the complex components of energy networks and how they behave over time in response to fluctuating supply and demand in order to achieve stability and sustainability. This work aims to enable a variety of stakeholders to better understand and associate the complexities in the systems and be aware of the connections over time and space. Using the Monash University electric network system as a case study, we explore the network dynamics and fluctuations over time. The virtual reality experience allows users to view campus electricity assets and local and remote energy sources, as well as witness the dynamics of the network. Thus, the complexities of the energy system and its impact on sustainability can be more readily understood.

Constructive visualization uses physical data units - tokens - to enable non-experts to create personalized visualizations engagingly. However, its physical nature limits efficiency and scalability. One potential solution to address this issue is autocomplete. By providing automated suggestions while still allowing for manual intervention, autocomplete can expedite visualization construction while maintaining expressivity. We conduct a speculative design study to examine how people would like to interact with a visualization authoring system that supports autocomplete. eXtended Reality (XR) remote collaboration refers to working together on virtual data or real objects through various types of reality. To achieve a higher immersive collaboration experience, it is critical to converge heterogeneous realities in one shared workspace, where environmental changes are continuously updated. In this study, We extend our previous work, the Webized XR system, in terms of sharing the local environmental context. This system can provide three types of context -sharing interface (2D video, 360 video, and 3D reconstruction), delivering spatial information about the workspace. We also performed a pilot user study to measure the quality of this system.

We propose a motion deformation analysis framework that can reconstruct the joint region of dynamic human only depending on extremely sparse RGBD images. In the framework, we analyze the deformation mechanism of the joint region from the perspective of its internal material. The non-rigid deformation of a joint region is transformed into the elastic deformation of multiple elements by introducing Finite Element Method. Considering the influence of joint position on the motion deformation analysis, we optimize the joint positions obtained from skeleton tracking prior. Experimental results verify the rationality and effectiveness of our framework.

Visualization plays an important role in extracting insights from complex and large-scale genomics data. Traditional graphical user interfaces (GUIs) offer limited flexibility for custom visualizations. Our prior work, Gosling, enables expressive visualization creation using a grammar-based approach, but beginners may face challenges in constructing complex visualizations. To address this, we explore multimodal interactions, including sketches, example images, and natural language inputs, to streamline visualization creation. Specifically, we customize two deep learning models (YOLO v7 and GPT3.5) to interpret user interactions and convert them into Gosling specifications. A workflow is proposed to progressively introduce and integrate multimodal interactions. We then present use cases demonstrating their effectiveness and identify challenges and opportunities for future research.

The determination of destinations and paths is a critical aspect of robot navigation. In recent years, research has been conducted on methods to provide robots with realistic destinations for use in practical situations. One such general method is a spatial search based on limited information such as the name of the target object or a photograph of the destination. However, if the rough location of the destination is known from the viewpoint of an instructor, and can be communicated to the robot, then it is possible to reduce the search load on the robot. Therefore, in this study, we propose a new task that integrates the pointed instructions of an operator using and augmented reality device into the robot's search route. However, the instructor may not be able to point directly to the route if it is within a blind spot. Thus, we propose a combined search method;where the pointing path is represented as a set of vectors rather than a sequence of points and used to generate a potential field which is integrated with an existing traditional robot navigation method. In this study, we evaluate the proposed method in an experiment using the 3D simulator Habitat, and show that the proposed method outperforms existing methods under the pointing path information.

We explored the avoidance movement behaviors of study participants immersed in a virtual reality environment. We placed a static virtual character at the midpoint between the start and target spot for the avoidance task, and a virtual walker character in front of the starting spot and scripted it to reach the target spot. Participants were placed behind the virtual walker in order to measure its influence on participants' behavior. We developed nine experimental conditions assigned to the virtual walker character by following a 3 (speed: slow vs. normal vs. fast walking speed) x 3 (proximity: close vs. middle vs. far proximity to the static virtual character) study design. For this within-group study, we collected data from 22 study participants to explore how speed and proximity walking patterns assigned to a virtual walker character could impact participants' avoidance movement behaviors and decisions. Our data revealed that 1) the speed factor impacted the participants' avoidance movement behavior;2) the proximity factor did not significantly impact the participants' avoidance movement behavior;3) the virtual walker character did not significantly impact participants' avoidance decisions regarding the static virtual character;4) in all examined conditions, the side-by-side distances between the participants and the static virtual character were inside the social space according to the proxemics model;and 5) in conditions in which a slow virtual walker character was present or in the condition of normal speed and far proximity, we observed an increased number of participants pass the virtual walker character.

Emergency response (ER) workers perform extremely demanding physical and cognitive tasks that can result in serious injuries and loss of life. human augmentation technologies have the potential to enhance physical and cognitive work-capacities, thereby dramatically transforming the landscape of ER work, reducing injury risk, improving ER, as well as helping attract and retain skilled ER workers. This opportunity has been significantly hindered by the lack of high-quality training for ER workers that effectively integrates innovative and intelligent augmentation solutions. Hence, new ER learning environments are needed that are adaptive, affordable, accessible, and continually available for reskilling the ER workforce as technological capabilities continue to improve. This article presents the research considerations in the design and integration of use-inspired exoskeletons and augmented reality technologies in ER processes and the identification of unique cognitive and motor learning needs of each of these technologies in context-independent and ER-relevant scenarios. We propose a human-centered artificial intelligence (AI) enabled training framework for these technologies in ER. Finally, how these human-centered training requirements for nascent technologies are integrated in an intelligent tutoring system that delivers across tiered access levels, covering the range of virtual, to mixed, to physical reality environments, is discussed.
