Rheological testing of soft materials aims to characterize them through a complex combination of elastic and viscous properties. Its fundamental idea is to apply a force and register the resulting deformation of the material. These tests have applications in a wide range of domains from adjusting oil drilling muds for different rock strata to developing fast-drying paints and quality control in food processing. Yet, visual-interactive means for the explorative analysis of the resulting data are scarce if they exist at all. Hence, we present VAOS - an open-source visual analysis software for exploring the complex rheological properties of soft materials subjected to oscillatory tests. VAOS offers a specific focus on the visual analysis across multiple samples and test runs at once, which is currently not well supported by existing software. We showcase the utility of VAOS in a usage scenario and two expert interviews, effectively demonstrating the improved ability of scientists to swiftly obtain a rheological fingerprint of complex materials.

For the 2022 IEEE VR 3DUI contest on the topic of "Arts, Science, Information and Knowledge - visualization and interactions", we present Artana, an immersive application proposing to explore anamorphosis in various interactive ways. Through an unexpected experience, the user is transported to a museum in which he/she will have access to the history of anamorphosis before being able to experience seven examples of them. A teleportation and a spinning wheel interaction techniques were implemented in Artana to ease interaction without altering the experience.

When playing sports in virtual reality foot interaction is crucial for many disciplines. We investigated how the visibility of the foot influences penalty shooting in soccer. In a between-group experiment, we asked 28 players to hit eight targets with a virtual ball. We measured the performance, task load, presence, ball control, and body ownership of inexperienced to advanced soccer players. In one condition, the players saw a visual representation of their tracked foot which improved the accuracy of the shots significantly. Players with invisible foot needed 58% more attempts. Further, with foot visibility the self-reported body ownership was higher.

In the field of the robotic industry, traditional robot simulation platforms require users to install specific software and to be equipped with high-performance computers. This paper designs a lightweight collision detection algorithm that is able to run smoothly from a web browser with a novel simulation platform for a humanoid robot. The proposed algorithm is based on the Morton code for bounding volume hierarchies, which uses the triangular patches detection algorithm to improve the accuracy of detection. Through the presented method, we can use the platform to edit the robot on any browser supporting device without installing extra plug-ins.

We present AiRType for AR/VR HMDs that enables text entry through bare hands for more natural perception. The hand models in the virtual environment mirror hand movements of the user and user targets and selects the keys via hand models. AiRType fully leverages the additional dimension without restraining the interaction space by users' arm lengths. It can be attached to anywhere and can be scaled freely. We evaluated and compared AiRType with the baseline the built-in keyboard of Magic Leap 1. AiRType shows 27% decrease in the error rate, 3.3% increase in characterper-second, and 9.4% increase in user satisfaction.

We describe a benchmark data generator for tracking methods for two- and three-dimensional time-dependent scalar fields. More and more topology-based tracking methods are presented in the visualization community, but the validation and evaluation of the tracking results are currently limited to qualitative visual approaches. We present a pipeline for creating different ground truth features that support evaluating tracking methods based on quantitative measures. In short, our approach randomly simulates a temporal point cloud with birth, death, split, merge, and continuation events, where the points are then used to derive a scalar field whose topological features correspond to the points. These scalar fields can be used as the input for different tracking methods, where the computed tracks can be compared against the ground truth feature evolution. This approach facilitates directly comparing the results of different tracking methods, independent of the initial feature characterization.

This paper investigates a reduction method for passenger's movement sensation with the XR mobility platform mounted on an autonomous vehicle to improve passenger comfort during auto-driving. We investigate a reduction method that controls passenger's sense of movement by controlling visual and tactile perception using a multimodal XR mobility platform which consists of an immersive display and a motion platform with a tilting seat. The result of 30 subjects shows the sense of movement perceived by the passenger was reduced significantly when both visual acceleration and tactile acceleration control method was activated inside a moving autonomous vehicle.

Incorporating interactive elements into medical virtual reality (VR) training can increase presence and engagement of trainees. Based on this, we designed emotional and pain facial expressions for a virtual patient that interacts with trainees in a VR training scenario for paramedics. We follow a user-centered approach by considering the requirements of trainers. Furthermore, we validate our concept with an online study and we plan a user study with paramedic students as the next step.

This paper presents XRtic, a prototyping toolkit enabling real-world cloth deformations to be used in novel ways in eXtended Reality (XR) applications. XRtic was developed based on the insights gathered from semi-structured interviews with XR developers. It consists of custom-made actuators that can be attached to regular clothing, a controller bus system, and a controller interface. Using our toolkit, users can design and integrate different cloth deformation types synchronised with virtual content in a plug-and-play manner. Along with a technical analysis of the actuation behaviour of the XRtic actuators, we present the findings gathered from a user study with eight XR developers, focusing on the usability of the system and creative support. Overall, participants found it an easy-to-use toolkit that supports iterative and rapid prototyping, and enables cloth to be deformed in unique ways in synchronisation with XR applications. Based on the findings, we also report limitations and future work relating to our system.

This paper proposes a novel framework to reduce the perceptual delay in rendering the facial expressions of virtual humans. The proposed method reduces the delay by predicting the future blend coefficients that represent facial expressions. The prediction accuracy of the proposed method is improved by 27% on average over a conventional LSTM. We also subjectively confirmed that the proposed method achieves natural facial expressions.
