In this study, we explore the 'Chameleon Effect' within metaverse environments and its impact on creative communication. This experiment investigates how avatar mimicry in online interactions influences creativity. Participants were divided into Mimic and Original conditions, participating in brainstorming tasks, notably the creative tasks such as the Alternative Uses Task. The study assesses the quality of ideas generated-focusing on Fluency, Flexibility, Elaboration, and Originality-and participant impressions of their avatars. Our findings suggest significant implications for enhancing creativity in virtual settings, providing insights into the future of collaborative innovation in the metaverse.

Mixed reality (MR) holds potential for transforming endovascular surgery by enhancing information delivery. This advancement could significantly alter surgical interfaces, leading to improved patient outcomes. Our research utilizes MR technology to transform physical monitor displays inside the operating room (OR) into holographic windows. We aim to reduce cognitive load on surgeons by counteracting the split attention effect and enabling ergonomic display layouts. Our research is tackling key design challenges, including hands-free interaction, and occlusion management in densely crowded ORs. We are conducting studies to understand user behavior changes when people consult information on holographic windows compared to conventional displays.

In this workshop submission, we reflect on the need to balance a breadth of design considerations when supporting mobile, spatial productivity. Whilst performance, ergonomics and usability remain key, there is an increasing realisation that the social impact of our designs must also be considered - from the social comfort and acceptability of a given workspace or interaction technique, to the social collisions they provoke with other passengers, to the environmental and social awareness the design facilitates in allowing the user to focus on their task whilst maintaining awareness of their environment and those around them.

360 degrees images offer panoramic views of captured environments, placing users within an egocentric perspective. While users can freely rotate their viewpoint, they don't experience 6-DoF navigation with translational movement. In this research, we introduce Avatar360, a novel method to elicit 6-DoF perception in 360 degrees panoramas, using avatar-assisted navigation combined with an exocentric view of the 360 degrees panorama. We seamlessly integrate a 3D avatar into 360 degrees panoramas, allowing users to navigate a 3D virtual landscape congruent with the 360 degrees background. By aligning the exocentric perspective of the 360 degrees panorama with the avatar's movements, we replicate a sensation of 6-DoF navigation in 360 degrees panoramas. We explore mechanisms for simultaneous avatar and viewpoint controls, as well as procedures for transitions between spatially connected 360 degrees panoramas. A user study was conducted to assess the perception of 6-DoF navigation in 360 degrees panoramas via a 3D avatar, evaluating users' sense of movement, disorientation, and presence. We also gained insight into perspective view controls and transition techniques between panoramas. Statistical analysis shows avatar-assisted navigation elicits a user's sense of movement within 360 degrees panoramas. Our results also provide guidelines for effective view control and transition strategies in avatar-assisted 360 degrees navigation.

Systems with occlusion capabilities have gained interest in augmented reality, vision augmentation, and image processing. To address the challenge of creating a precise yet lightweight occlusion system, we introduce a novel architecture to tackle occlusion blurriness due to defocusing. Our approach, utilizing a dynamic pinhole array on a transmissive spatial light modulator (SLM) positioned between the eye and the occlusion layer, offers adaptive pinhole patterns, gaze-contingent functionality, and the potential to reduce visual artifacts. Our preliminary result demonstrates that, with the focal plane at 1.8m, an occlusion placed at 4 cm can be observed sharply through a 4.3mm aperture.

Implementing an autonomous agent on a social VR platform where many users share space requires diverse information. In particular, it is required to recognize the distance from other users, their orientation toward each other, the avatar's pose, and text and voice messages, and to behave accordingly. This paper proposes an API to obtain the above information on "Cluster," a multi-device social VR platform in operation, and an agent that uses the API. We have implemented this API using a network proxy. The agent using this API can connect to ChatGPT [7] and have a conversation in real time. We measured the latency required for the conversation and confirmed that the response time was about 1 second.

Virtual Reality (VR) has great potential for education and training, but it is not fully understood how to make VR training as effective as possible. An investigation indicated that a combination of auditory and textual information is the best way to present training instructions and explanations to the user. However, is it also suitable to perceive the training content visualized in the virtual environment? We conduct a within-subjects study to investigate this by comparing users' gaze attention in four information transfer methods. The results are consistent with previous findings that the auditory-visual combination is the most appropriate of the methods compared.

With the rise in accessibility of consumer-grade virtual reality headsets, social virtual reality applications have now caught widespread attention. One's anticipation for the virtual world is for it to be lively with characters. However, current technology falls short of generating intelligent virtual agents, thus creating a densely-populated environment with which one could have a variety of interactions is out of reach. This position paper introduces a takeover system which enables a single actor to seamlessly take over control of multiple virtual characters in a social virtual reality environment. In our experiments, we expect our system to enhance the perceived social presence of the scene and to uncover the difference in perception regarding computer-driven agents and human controlled avatars when interacting with multiple characters in the same environment.

Situated analytics is visual analysis that is embedded in the physical world. Conventionally, the data related to referents (i.e., physical objects) is manipulated indirectly, through dedicated interaction devices or using separate abstract representations. The natural way of interacting in 3D space using direct manipulation with one's hands is hardly employed when abstract data is concerned. In this paper, we explore the idea of directly brushing and linking referents in the real world to analyze abstract data related to the referents. We discuss what brushing & linking means when applied to the real world, including multiple ways of selecting referents (brushing) in augmented reality, as well as different ways of linking with an abstract data view, presented on a dedicated display (a tablet). A proof of concept was implemented to test and demonstrate the capabilities of brushing & linking of referents. We conclude with a set of open research challenges that exist in this new and emerging area.

Nebula [4] is an open-source1 olfactory display compatible with autonomous HMDs and capable of diffusing scents at different diffusion rates. It relies on ultrasonic atomizers controlled via pulse-width modulated signals. Although designed to diffuse two odors simultaneously, it has only been evaluated and tested for the diffusion of a single odor so far. In this demonstration, we propose to showcase its capacity to diffuse two odors within a 6 DoF (degrees of freedom) immersive scenario.
