Statistical and probabilistic reasoning enlightens our judgments about uncertainty and the chance or beliefs on the occurrence of random events in everyday life. Therefore, there are scientists working with probability and statistics in various fields of knowledge, what favors the formation of scientific network collaborations of researchers with different backgrounds. Here, we propose to describe the Brazilian PhDs who work with probability and statistics. In particular, we analyze national and states collaboration networks of such researchers by calculating different metrics. We show that there is a greater concentration of nodes in and around the cites which host probability and statistics graduate programs. Moreover, the states that host P&S Doctoral programs are the most central. We also observe a disparity in the size of the states networks. The clustering coefficient of the national network suggests that this network and regional differences especially with respect to states from South-east and North is not cohesive and, probably, it is in a maturing stage.

Technology-based instruction represents a new recent pedagogical paradigm that is rooted in the realization that new generations are much more comfortable with, and excited about, new technologies. The rapid technological advancement over the past decade has fueled an enormous demand for the integration of modern networking, informational and computational tools with classical pedagogical instruments. Consequently, teaching with technology typically involves utilizing a variety of IT and multimedia resources for online learning, course management, electronic course materials, and novel tools of communication, engagement, experimental, critical thinking, and assessment. The NSF-funded statistics Online Computational Resource (SOCR) provides a number of interactive tools for enhancing instruction in various undergraduate and graduate courses in probability and statistics. These resources include online instructional materials, statistical calculators, interactive graphical user interfaces, computational and simulation applets, tools for data analysis and visualization. The tools provided as part of SOCR include conceptual simulations and statistical computing interfaces, which are designed to bridge between the introductory and the more advanced computational and applied probability and statistics courses. In this manuscript, we describe our designs for utilizing SOCR technology in instruction in a recent study. In addition, present the results of the effectiveness of using SOCR tools at two different course intensity levels on three outcome measures: exam scores, student satisfaction and choice of technology to complete assignments. Learning styles assessment was completed at baseline. We have used three very different designs for three different undergraduate classes. Each course included a treatment group, using the SOCR resources, and a control group, using classical instruction techniques. In phase measuring profilometry (PMP), Stoilov is a popular algorithm with satisfied effect. But Stoilov algorithm relies too much on gray level information of fringes. Meanwhile, in the phase calculation, the light intensity subtraction, division or roots extraction will cause some singular phenomena, such as making the numerator or denominator zero in some positions or making roots plural, etc. This would lead to meaningless or large error in phase unwrapping, which might cause the reconstruction distorted or even unable to reconstruct. This paper proposes an improved Stoilov algorithm based on probability and statistics. Suppose that the probability of real data is the highest, we choose the cosine square matrix value of phase shift for processing. After ruling out the singular points of large error, we get the closest value to true phase shift using the method of probability and statistics. Experimental results show that this method can effectively restrain singular phenomenon, and can ensure the accuracy of PMP. (C) 2015 Elsevier GmbH. All rights reserved.

Teaching probability and statistics to undergraduate engineering students is a challenge because of the theoretical nature of the topic. There are many advantages to introducing this topic to first-year students. Students who have seen and worked with topics in probability and statistics are more likely to understand these principles when they are used in later courses, and they more clearly understand the relationship of statistics to their disciplinary coursework. In this paper we describe how probability and statistics can be introduced within a first-semester engineering course. A modular approach was used, which included a lecture with a number of active learning exercises, a homework assignment, and a hands-on experiment to help them better understand the theoretical background. Assessment results illustrate that after the module, the students believed they could meet all of the module's learning objectives and that each of the learning opportunities contributed to their achievement of the objectives.

CDMA communication system has a certain anti-interference performance, but when the interference is stronger, the performance and stability of system will descend obviously. In this paper, narrow-band interference suppression based on FFT transform is adopted to improving anti-interference performance of CDMA communication systems significantly. probability and statistics search for interference signal is used in frequency domain, which increases the stability of anti-interference. This paper describes Matlab simulation and FPGA implementation of the algorithm. Hardware experiments show that the algorithm can improve the performance of narrow-band interference suppression for the ordinary CDMA mobile phone about 25dB.

This Work-in-Progress paper describes an ongoing project for modernizing the probability and statistics program component for electrical and computer engineering majors at the University of Kansas. Traditionally in engineering curricula around the nation, this three-hour senior-level course has at most focused on the probability of overlapping events, properties and examples of discrete and continuous random variables, and only rudimentary statistical principles involving confidence intervals, hypothesis testing, and linear least-squares curve fitting. Some courses nationwide emphasize only probability and random variables, some focus only on the statistical aspects of data handling, and a few also include small projects that feature computer-generated pseudo-random numbers. ABET has program criteria that require graduates to have some knowledge of probability and statistics. Usually, programs seek to satisfy this requirement by one of these single self-contained three-hour courses. What is needed to modernize the curricula is a more comprehensive treatment that not only improves the course and extends these concepts beyond into the senior capstone and other courses but also prepares graduates for more extensive probability and statistics applications after graduation.
