ObjectiveThis pilot study tested the feasibility and stress reduction effectiveness of a one-time virtual reality mindfulness module (VRMM) in individuals with mild-to-moderate traumatic brain injury (TBI).MethodsThirty-eight participants participated in a pilot study utilizing a mixed methods convergent parallel design. Pretest and posttest stress levels were collected;participants engaged in a brief 4-question qualitative interview. Mann Whitney U and Wilcoxon Signed Rank Tests were used. Qualitative analysis utilized grounded ***-VRMM, two-thirds (24) of participants had a statistically significant decrease in stress levels. A key qualitative finding indicated that participants found the immersiveness and realism of the VR environments helpful in compensating for cognitive deficits resulting from TBI. There were no adverse side effects reported, indicating that well-designed VRMMs that minimize motion-induced adverse effects are well tolerated in persons with *** guided mindfulness activity in a VR environment was well tolerated, and participants overall found VRMM effective in reducing stress levels. VR-based environments have potential to harness guided mindfulness practice and may support persons with TBI to enhance concentration. Further application of this technology in TBI rehabilitation is promising and warrants future research to explore the benefit of VR in improving rehabilitation outcomes.

Background A neurovascular conflict (NVC) is considered the cause of trigeminal neuralgia (TN) in 75% of cases, and if so, a microvascular decompression (MVD) can lead to significant pain relief. A reliable preoperative detection of NVC is essential for clinical decision-making and surgical planning, making detailed neuroradiologic imaging an important component. We present our experiences and clinical outcomes with preoperative planning of the MVD procedure in a virtual reality (VR) environment, based on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) including magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) and magnetic resonance venography (MRV) sequences. Methods We analyzed the data of 30 consecutive MVDs in patients treated for TN, in a retrospective single-surgeon (R.A. Kockro) study. Out of the 30 cases, 26 were included. Preoperatively, MRA/MRV and MRI series were fused and three dimensionally reconstructed in a VR environment. All critical structures such as the trigeminal nerve as well as the arteries and veins of the cerebellopontine angle, the brainstem, the neighboring cranial nerves, and the transverse and sigmoid sinus were segmented. The NVC was visualized and a simulation of a retrosigmoid approach, with varying trajectories, to the NVC was performed. The intraoperative findings were then compared with the data of the simulation. The clinical outcome was assessed by a detailed review of medical reports, and follow-up-interviews were conducted in all available patients (20/26). Results The VR planning was well integrated into the clinical workflow, and imaging processing time was 30 to 40 minutes. There was a sole arterial conflict in 13 patients, a venous conflict in 4 patients, and a combined arteriovenous conflict in 9 patients. The preoperative simulations provided a precise visualization of the anatomical relationships of the offending vessels and the trigeminal nerves as well as the surrounding structures. Background There is a great need for training and education in the nursing curriculum to improve nurses' knowledge and skills to provide oral health *** A pilot study was conducted to evaluate the use of a virtual reality (VR)-based Oral Health Care Learning System to train geriatric oral health care among nursing students. Fifty undergraduate nursing students were randomly assigned to experimental (n = 25) and control (n = 25) groups. The experimental group received the VR-based simulation training on geriatric oral health care and the training was implemented twice at two weeks apart from March to November 2021. The control group did not receive the training intervention. Knowledge, attitude, and self-efficacy of geriatric oral health care as well as the intention to assist oral health care for older adults were assessed at the beginning, second, and fourth weeks. virtual reality simulations in robotic surgery training: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Objective To compare VR simulations with other training methods regarding improvements in objective assessment scores and task completion times. Method A database search was conducted on 20 May 2024 across Central, MEDLINE, EMBASE, Web of Science, and Scopus. Included were randomised controlled trials comparing VR simulations to other training methods, assessing objective scores and task times. The Risk of Bias-2 tool was used for bias assessment. Results Eighteen studies were included. VR significantly improved objective scores (n = 339, SMD 1.04, 95% CI 0.40-1.69, P = 0.002) and reduced task completion times (n = 357, SMD of -1.08, 95% CI of as - 2.05 to - 0.12, P = 0.03) compared to no additional training. VR was as effective as dry lab training for improving scores (n = 213, SMD -0.47, 95% CI - 1.34 to 0.41, P = 0.30) and task times (n = 98, SMD - 0.37, 95% CI - 1.51 to 0.78, P = 0.53). However, one study found wet lab training significantly reduced task times compared to VR (n = 20, SMD of 1.7, 95% CI of 0.65-2.76, P = 0.002). No significant differences were found when VR alone was compared to VR with expert advice. Conclusion VR is more effective than no additional training and is as effective as dry lab training in robotic skill acquisitions. Therefore, VR is effective in enhancing robotic surgery skills and warrants an expanded role in surgical training programmes.

In response to the digital transformation in education, this study explores the efficacy of virtual reality (VR) video games in teaching direct current electrical circuits at a public university in Colombia. Using a mixed-method action research approach, this study aimed to design, implement, and evaluate a VR-based educational strategy to enhance undergraduate learning experiences. The methodology integrated VR into the curriculum, facilitating a comparison of this innovative approach with traditional teaching methods. The results indicate that the VR strategy significantly improved students' comprehension of electrical circuits and increased engagement, demonstrating the utility of immersive technologies in educational settings. Challenges such as the need for technological integration and curriculum adaptation were also identified. This study concludes that VR video games can effectively augment electrical engineering education, offering a model for incorporating advanced digital tools into higher education curricula. This approach aligns with ongoing trends in digital transformation, suggesting significant potential for broad applications across various educational contexts.

Purpose of ReviewWith the ongoing opioid crisis, there is a continued need to develop multimodal pain management strategies inclusive of non-pharmacological treatments. virtual reality (VR) offers a non-invasive treatment approach for the management of acute and chronic pain including postoperative pain. The aim of this review is to describe the use of VR and its effect on pain-related outcome measures compared to routine care in various types of surgical *** FindingsSevere postoperative pain is associated with an increased risk of medical complications and may lead to the development of chronic pain. VR-based interventions are a form of distraction therapy that attenuates pain perception and have been shown to reduce activity in central pain-processing regions. In patients undergoing cardiac surgery, VR may reduce postoperative pain and improve physiological parameters such as heart rate and blood pressure. VR technology was found to have a high satisfaction rate in patients undergoing laparoscopic abdominal surgeries. Three-dimensional (3D) VR interventions may be useful for postoperative pain control in patients undergoing head and neck surgery. VR technology has revealed mixed results for postoperative pain control following orthopedic procedures although it has beneficial effects on functional outcomes during postoperative rehabilitation. In the pediatric population, VR is notable for its applicability in postoperative pain control and *** technology is a novel, non-pharmacologic adjunct in the management of postoperative pain. Current studies are limited regarding therapy adaptations for the elderly population. High-quality randomized controlled trials are needed to establish the clinical effectiveness of VR-based therapies in the postoperative setting.

Study objective: Few studies have focused on the effect of virtual reality (VR) exposure on postoperative acute pain in adult female patients undergoing gynecology surgery. Design: A randomized control trial (RCT) study. Setting: At Beijing Fuxing Hospital. Patients: 115 patients aged between 20 and 60 years, American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) physical status I - II were consecutively enrolled and randomly divided into VR group (n = 58) or control group (n = 57). Interventions: Patients in the VR group received 15 min of VR video viewing before surgery. Measurements: The primary outcome was acute postoperative pain at 8 h which was measured by the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) scores. The secondary outcomes including the use of analgesic drugs, the incidence of moderate pain and postoperative recovery which were recorded 24 h after surgery. The Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) was also used to evaluate patients' emotional status before surgery. Main results: The VAS scores at 30 min [2 (1,2) vs. 3 (2,3)], 2 h [2 (2,3) vs. 4 (3,4)], 4 h [3 (2,4) vs. 4 (4,5)], 8 h [3 (2,4) vs. 4 (4,5)], 12 h [2 (2,3) vs. 4 (3,4)], 24 h [1 (1,2) vs. 3 (2,3)] after surgery. Generalized estimation equation (GEE) indicated that VR intervention was negatively correlated with postoperative VAS values (beta = -0.830, S.E = 0.199, 95%CI (-1.220,-0.439), Wald chi(2) = 17.359, p<0.05), in the meanwhile, VR also lower the incidence of moderate pain (VAS > 4) at 8 h postoperatively (12.1% vs 31.0%, p = 0.013). However, the 24 h tramadol usage remained unchanged. Patients in the VR group had better sleep quality (6.33 +/- 2.3 vs. 4.12 +/- 2.5, p < 0.001) and lower incidence of nausea (43.1% vs. 63.2%, p < 0.05), dizziness (0% vs. 14.0%, p < 0.05), and headache (12.1% vs. 29.8%, p < 0.05). Introduction: Medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD) are the most effective interventions for this condition, yet many patients discontinue treatment. Though adjunct psychosocial treatments are recommended to increase retention and reduce relapse, the scarcity of trained providers hinders access to and utilization of evidence-based interventions. We conducted a Phase 1 study to assess the feasibility of a virtual reality-delivered Mindfulness-Oriented Recovery Enhancement (MORE-VR) intervention for patients receiving MOUD. Patients and methods: Patients receiving buprenorphine or methadone for OUD (N = 34) were scheduled for 8 weekly sessions of MORE-VR. Enrollment and retention rates were analyzed. Participants reported on the usability and acceptability of MORE-VR, opioid use, and craving and affect before and after each VR session. Heart rate was monitored during one session of MORE-VR. Results: Twenty-three participants completed four or more MORE-VR sessions (minimum recommended intervention dose). Participants reported high usability and acceptability of MORE-VR, which had an excellent safety profile. Illicit opioid use decreased significantly from pre- to post-treatment (F = 4.44, p=.04). We observed a significant within-session decrease in opioid craving (F = 39.3, p<.001) and negative affect (F = 36.3, p<.001), and a significant within-session increase in positive affect (F = 23.6, p<.001). Heart rate shifted during cue-exposure and mindfulness practices (F = 6.79, p<.001). Conclusions: High retention, usability and acceptability rates and low adverse events demonstrated that MORE-VR is a feasible, engaging, and safe intervention. Our findings show that MORE-VR can be delivered as an adjunctive intervention to MOUD and suggest that MORE-VR may improve OUD treatment outcomes and modulate autonomic responses. MORE-VR's efficacy will be tested in a subsequent Phase 2 trial.

Objectives: To assess the feasibility and implementation, usability, acceptability and efficacy of virtual reality (VR), and augmented reality (AR) smartphone applications for upskilling care home workers in hand hygiene and to explore underlying learning mechanisms. Materials and Methods: Care homes in Northwest England were recruited. We took a mixed-methods and pre-test and post-test approach by analyzing uptake and completion rates of AR, immersive VR or non-immersive VR training, validated and bespoke questionnaires, observations, videos, and interviews. Quantitative data were analyzed descriptively. Qualitative data were analyzed using a combined inductive and deductive approach. Results: Forty-eight care staff completed AR training (n = 19), immersive VR training (n = 21), or non-immersive VR training (n = 8). The immersive VR and AR training had good usability with System Usability Scale scores of 84.40 and 77.89 (of 100), respectively. They had high acceptability, with 95% of staff supporting further use. The non-immersive VR training had borderline poor usability, scoring 67.19 and only 63% would support further use. There was minimal improved knowledge, with an average of 6% increase to the knowledge questionnaire. Average hand hygiene technique scores increased from 4.77 (of 11) to 7.23 after the training. Repeated practice, task realism, feedback and reminding, and interactivity were important learning mechanisms triggered by AR/VR. Feasibility and implementation considerations included managerial support, physical space, providing support, screen size, lagging Internet, and fitting the headset. Conclusions: AR and immersive VR apps are feasible, usable, and acceptable for delivering training. Future work should explore whether they are more effective than previous training and ensure equity in training opportunities.

AimTo map evidence of the existing virtual reality-based dementia educational programmes and the effects of these educational programmes on dementia formal and informal *** scoping *** comprehensive search of nine databases was conducted to find studies from the inception of the databases to October 2023. Two authors independently screened the titles and abstracts related to the eligibility criteria. Full texts of potentially relevant studies were read by one author and checked by a second. Data extraction and synthesis using NVivo 12 were undertaken by one author and checked by two other *** studies published between 2002 and 2022. The four randomised controlled studies and five qualitative studies were of moderate to good methodological quality. The 10 quasi-experimental studies were of weak to moderate quality. Fifteen virtual reality-based educational programmes had a positive influence on formal and informal caregivers, including improving caregivers' perceptions changing attitudes towards people with dementia, while the nursing competence of formal caregivers did not improve in short term.
