Background: Dementia due to Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most prevalent neurocognitive disorder in the world and impacts the individual's cognitive functions and functionality in the early stages of the condition. virtual reality (VR) interventions can assist in non-pharmacological treatment in a more ecological way, positively impacting cognitive abilities. However, there are few studies on VR exclusively involving people with AD in randomized controlled trials. Objective: To evaluate the effects of VR intervention on the cognitive functions of people with AD. Methods: A systematically conducted search was carried out in MEDLINE, EMBASE, BVS, Web of Science, and Scopus. Eligible studies were randomized controlled trials comparing the efficacy of VR and traditional cognitive interventions in people with AD. Methodologic quality was assessed with the Cochrane risk of bias tool, and outcomes were calculated as risk ratios (for dichotomous outcomes) and mean differences (for continuous outcomes) with 95% confidence interval. Results: A total of three randomized controlled trials with 75 participants were included. An improvement in the performance of the VR group was observed in memory, especially when comparing the usual treatment [MD = 0.99;CI95%: 0.33;1.66;I-2 = 0%]. VR has little or no effect on participants' executive function [MD = 1.36;95%CI: -1.12;3.85;I-2 = 0%] compared to the usual treatment. Conclusions: Our study results cautiously suggest, despite the small number of participants, that VR intervention may be a suitable memory treatment for individuals diagnosed with AD.

IntroductionSeveral studies demonstrated the utility of immersive virtual reality (VR) as a complementary approach to conventional therapy for improving motor, psychological and cognitive impairment in some pathological conditions. Our pilot study aims to evaluate for the first time: 1) sense of presence, tolerability and usability of VR immersive experience in patients with early stages of Huntington disease (eHDp) compared to healthy controls (HC);2) correlation between the use of technology/cybersickness and the variables of presence/usability;3) correlation between clinical characteristics (genetic, motor, functional and cognitive) and VR's *** recruited 10 eHDp and 10 age, gender and education matched HC. Participants completed questionnaires about sense of presence, usability, tolerability and technology use profile. Subjects were exposed to different VR scenarios from a first-person perspective through a standalone VR *** results showed no significant statistical difference between eHDp and HC for the sense of presence (p=0.910), usability (p=0.744) and tolerability (p=0.730) during the VR experience. Familiarity with the use of technology was also comparable between groups (p=0.676). Regarding correlations in eHDp group, our results showed no correlations between use of technology/tolerability and the sense of presence/usability. Moreover, clinical characteristics of eHDp (genetic, motor, functional and cognitive scores) did not influence the sense of presence, tolerability and *** research presents preliminary evidence for the applicability of VR in eHDp. These results open up the possibility to explore future applications of this methodology in rehabilitation (i.e., cognitive training, physiotherapy), diagnosis and psychological support in Huntington disease patients.

Aim: In what ways does VR simulation as a learning activity contribute to increased confidence in therapeutic relational and communication skills among nursing students in mental health practice? Background: There is a need to strengthen practical competence and prepare nursing students for relational work with individuals facing mental health challenges to achieve the best learning outcomes. This study explores students' experiences with VR simulation in mental health and how this learning activity can help nursing students build confidence in their interpersonal interactions with members of a vulnerable patient group. Design: This study employed a qualitative interpretive approach based on focus group interviews and reflection notes. Methods: This research study used focus group interviews and reflection notes as methods. Three focus group interviews were conducted and students completed 122 reflection notes. This data collectively forms the basis of the study. Results: The data revealed three main themes regarding how the teaching method contributed to increased student confidence: 1) the learning opportunities provided by VR technology;2) the relevance of VR for professional practice;and 3) the importance of debriefing and reflection for learning outcomes. Conclusions: VR simulation provided students with a novel experience in mental health practice education. The learning environment was safe, and they were able to visualise theory in the form of practical action. Nursing students found VR simulation to be a relevant preparation for and supplement to clinical practice in mental health work. The students acquired practical and relational competence that benefitted patients and increased patient safety.

virtual reality for routine immunisations in needle phobic children with and without developmental disabilities: a pilot study. Background: virtual reality (VR) headsets can improve needle procedure success and experiences for children, but they have not been evaluated to support immunisation in children with anxiety and behavioural challenges. This study assessed the feasibility and acceptability of VR for immunisation in children with needle phobia, including children with and without developmental disabilities. Methods: A mixed method pilot study was conducted at the Royal Children's Hospital, Melbourne. Children with needle phobia aged 4-14 years scheduled for immunisation with distraction and conscious sedation were eligible. VR was offered to children with needle anxiety and/or developmental disabilities before and during immunisation in addition to standard care. Children and caregivers completed electronic surveys preand post-immunisation, followed by qualitative interviews post-immunisation. Clinicians completed postimmunisation surveys. Primary outcomes were feasibility and acceptability of VR according to children, caregivers and clinicians. Results: Between May and December 2022, we screened 54 children and included 30;15 with and 15 without developmental disability. Preparation to use VR took less than five minutes for most children (24/30;80 %). Twenty nine (96 %) used VR immediately before immunisation, and 17 (57 %) continued using it during immunisation (7 with developmental disability, 10 without). Twenty seven (90 %) children were immunised successfully, with a small reduction in required sedation. Of those who used VR during immunisation, 16/17(94 %) reported a more positive overall experience. Of those who only used VR before immunisation, 3/13 (23%) still reported benefit. Purpose Cesarean section may result in adverse psychosocial and behavioral outcomes because women put considerable emphasis on the process of birth. virtual reality treatment has been shown by many studies to reduce anxiety and improve patient satisfaction. Therefore, we designed a randomized controlled trial to investigate whether the application of virtual reality technology during cesarean section can reduce maternal anxiety and improve satisfaction. Methods We recruited 128 women undergoing elective cesarean delivery with proposed spinal anesthesia and randomly assigned them to either virtual reality or routine care. The virtual reality intervention was a virtual reality program tailored specifically for women undergoing cesarean section. Primary outcome was the change in anxiety score (change = preoperative-intraoperative score). Secondary outcomes included patient satisfaction score, requirement of intraoperative sedative and analgesic drugs, and respiratory rate. Results The change in anxiety score in the virtual reality group was significantly higher than that in the routine care group (30 [20, 47.5] vs 10 [- 10, 23.8], respectively;P < 0.001, with Hodges-Lehmann median difference estimate of 20 (95% confidence interval CI, 15-30)). There were no significant differences between the two groups in patient satisfaction scores, the requirement of intraoperative sedative and analgesic drugs, and respiratory rate and side effects. Conclusion virtual reality treatment could reduce the anxiety of women undergoing elective cesarean section, which is beneficial to the mother and baby.

virtual reality (VR) tools are gaining attention among science educators. However, evaluations of VR's educational effectiveness, particularly in ecological settings and hands-on lab-based undergraduate education (e.g., chemistry), remain limited. In this study, we report our efforts to implement VR as a laboratory pretraining activity in an introductory Organic Chemistry for first year undergraduate students. We developed a VR-integrated pedagogical practice for students (n = 59) enrolled in interdisciplinary studies at Roskilde University Denmark. The study procedure involved (i) a pretest, (ii) a virtual experiment to identify organic reactions performed in a VR simulation, (iii) a real lab experiment of selected organic reactions, and (iv) a post-test. To investigate learning outcomes, survey data were collected and analyzed for reliability and statistical gains across several cognitive and affective aspects of learning. We found that using VR simulations as a pretraining teaching tool improved students' overall cognitive engagement with organic chemistry lab exercises. While there was no significant increase in students' intrinsic motivation and self-efficacy, their post-intervention perceived learning scores were quite high. However, implementing VR pretraining intervention in ecological/niche lab courses is complex and involves several technical and pedagogical limitations that warrant further attention.

virtual reality for advanced cancer patients assisted at home: A randomized controlled interventional study

Objective: virtual reality (VR) has been demonstrated to be an effective option for integrating psychological interventions in different therapeutic settings. This randomized controlled interventional study aims to assess the effects of VR, compared to tablet controlled intervention, on anxiety, depression, pain, and short-term psychophysical symptoms in advanced cancer patients assisted at home. Methods: Participants were provided with a VR headset or a tablet (TAB) for 4 days. On the first and last day, anxiety and depression were measured by Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale and pain by Brief Pain Inventory. Before and after each VR and tablet session, symptoms were collected by the Edmonton Symptom Assessment Scale (ESAS). Results: Fifty-three patients (27 VR vs. 26 TAB) completed the study. Anxiety significantly decreased in the VR group after the 4-day intervention. The analysis of ESAS showed a significant improvement in pain (p = 0.013), tiredness (p < 0.001), and anxiety (p = 0.013) for TAB group, and a significant reduction in tiredness (p < 0.001) in the VR group. Conclusions: Technological and user-friendly tools, such as VR and tablets, might be integrated with traditional psychological interventions to improve anxiety and cancer-related short-term symptoms. Further studies are needed to better consolidate the possible beneficial effects of VR.

Purpose of ReviewThis review critically analyzes the recent literature on virtual reality's (VR) use in acute and chronic pain management, offering insights into its efficacy, applications, and *** FindingsRecent studies, including meta-analyses and randomized controlled trials, have demonstrated VR's effectiveness in reducing pain intensity in various acute pain scenarios, such as procedural/acute pain and in chronic pain conditions. The role of factors such as immersion and presence in enhancing VR's efficacy has been emphasized. Further benefits have been identified in the use of VR for assessment as well as symptom gathering through conversational avatars. However, studies are limited, and strong conclusions will require further *** is emerging as a promising non-pharmacological intervention in pain management for acute and chronic pain. However, its long-term efficacy, particularly in chronic pain management, remains an area requiring further research. Key findings highlight that VR programs vary in efficacy depending on the specificity of the origin of pain.

BackgroundCataract surgery requires a high level of dexterity and experience to avoid serious intra- and post-operative complications. Proper surgical training and evaluation during the learning phase are crucial to promote safety in the operating room (OR). This scoping review aims to report cataract surgery training efficacy for patient safety and trainee satisfaction in the OR when using virtual reality simulators (EyeSi [Haag-Streit, Heidelberg, Germany] or HelpMeSee [HelpMeSee foundation, Jersey city, New Jersey, United States]) or supervised surgical training on actual patients programs in *** online article search in the PubMed database was performed to identify studies proposing OR performance assessment after virtual-reality simulation (EyeSi or HelpMeSee) or supervised surgical training on actual patients programs. Outcome assessment was primarily based on patient safety (i.e., intra- and post- operative complications, OR performance, operating time) and secondarily based on trainee satisfaction (i.e., subjective assessment).ResultsWe reviewed 18 articles, involving 1515 participants. There were 13 using the EyeSi simulator, with 10 studies conducted in high-income countries (59%). One study used the HelpMeSee simulator and was conducted in India. The four remaining studies reported supervised surgical training on actual patients, mostly conducted in low- middle- income countries. Training programs greatly differed between studies and the level of certainty was considered low. Only four studies were randomized clinical trials. There were 17 studies (94%) proposing patient safety assessments, mainly through intraoperative complication reports (67%). Significant safety improvements were found in 80% of comparative virtual reality simulation studies. Background: virtual reality-based exercise rehabilitation (VRER) is a promising intervention for patients with cancer -related dysfunctions (CRDs). However, studies focusing on VRER for CRDs are lacking, and the results are inconsistent. Objective: We aimed to review the application of VRER in patients with CRDs. Methods: This scoping review was conducted following the PRISMA-ScR (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta -Analyses extension for Scoping Reviews) checklist framework. Publications were included from the time of database establishment to October 14, 2023. The databases were PubMed, Embase, Scopus, Cochrane, Web of Science, ProQuest, arXiv, IEEE Xplore, MedRxiv, CNKI, Wanfang Data, VIP, and SinoMed. The population included patients with cancer. A virtual reality (VR) system or device was required to be provided in exercise rehabilitation as an intervention. Eligible studies focused on VRER used for CRDs. Study selection and data extraction were performed by 2 reviewers independently. Extracted data included authors, year, country, study type, groups, sample size, participant age, cancer type, existing or potential CRDs, VR models and devices, intervention programs and durations, effectiveness, compliance, satisfaction, and safety. Results: We identified 25 articles, and among these, 12 (48%) were randomized clinical trials, 11 (44%) were other experimental studies, and 2 (8%) were observational studies. The total sample size was 1174 (range 6-136). Among the 25 studies, 22 (88%), 2 (8%), and 1 (4%) included nonimmersive VR, immersive VR, and augmented reality, respectively, which are models of VRER. Commercial game programs (17/25, 68%) were the most popular interventions of VRER, and their duration ranged from 3 to 12 weeks. Using these models and devices, VRER was mostly applied in patients with breast cancer (14/25, 56%), leukemia (8/25, 32%), and lung cancer (3/25, 12%).
