Background/Aims Older age and cognitive inactivity have been associated with cognitive impairment, which in turn is linked to economic and societal burdens due to the high costs of care, especially for care homes and informal care. Emerging non-pharmacological interventions using new technologies, such as virtual reality (VR) delivered on a head-mounted display (HMD), might offer an alternative to maintain or improve cognition. The study aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of a VR-based Digital Therapeutics application for improving cognitive functions among healthy older *** Seventy-two healthy seniors (experimental group N = 35, control group N = 37), aged 65-85 years, were recruited by the Medical University of Lodz (Poland). Participants were randomly allocated to the experimental group (a VR-based cognitive training which consists of a warm-up module and three tasks, including one-back and dual-N-back) or to the control group (a regular VR headset app only showing nature videos). The exercises are performed in different 360-degree natural environments while listening to a preferred music genre and delivered on a head-mounted display (HMD). The 12-week intervention of 12 min was delivered at least three times per week (36 sessions). Compliance and performance were followed through a web-based application. Primary outcomes included attention and working memory (CNS-Vital Signs computerized cognitive battery). Secondary outcomes comprised other cognitive domains. Over the last decade, virtual reality (VR) and Augmented reality (AR) have gained popularity across various industries, particularly the arts, thanks to technological advances and inexpensive hardware and software availability. These technologies have redefined the boundaries of creativity and immersive experiences in artistic expression. This paper explores the dynamic interface between AR, VR, and the diverse Information Technology (IT) landscape. In this context, AR augments the physical world with digital overlays, while VR places users in fully simulated environments. This paper discusses these technologies in detail, including their basic concepts and hardware and software components. This survey examines how AR and VR can positively impact artistic fields such as virtual art galleries, augmented public installations, and innovative theatrical performances. We discuss limitations in hardware, software development, user experience, and ethical considerations. Further, we emphasize collaboration possibilities, accessibility, and inclusivity to probe AR and VR's profound impact on artistic creativity. The paper illustrates the transformative power of these technologies through case studies and noteworthy projects. Finally, future trends are outlined, highlighting advancements, emerging artistic forms, and social and cultural implications.

virtual reality use in pediatric patients for orthopedic clinical procedures: A randomized prospective trial of efficacy

Background: Distraction therapy use such as virtual reality is novel in the pediatric orthopedic field. In this study, we use subjective and objective metrics to evaluate virtual reality efficacy to reduce anxiety and pain in a pediatric orthopedic ***: A prospective randomized controlled trial included patients between age 5 and 17 years, presenting to a tertiary care pediatric orthopedic clinic. Parallel groups underwent orthopedic procedures in clinic, utilizing immersive and interactive virtual reality distraction therapies versus standard of care. Procedures included cast application, cast removal, bone pin removal, and fracture reduction. All preprocedure parameters were similar between the groups. Primary outcome was the difference between maximum procedural heart rate and baseline. Secondary outcomes included Wong Baker FACES Rating Scale (Wong & Baker, 1988, Oklahoma, USA) for pain and Visual Analog Scale scores for ***: Ninety-five patients (66 M, 29 F) underwent 59 cast removals, 26 cast applications, 7 percutaneous pin removals, and 3 fracture reductions. Average patient age in the virtual reality and control cohorts was 10.1 (5-17) and 10.6 (5-17), respectively. Average change in maximum heart rate in the virtual reality and control groups was 10.6 +/- 10.1 versus 18.4 +/- 11.0 (p = 0.00048). The virtual reality group demonstrated trends toward lower perceived anxiety (1.7 +/- 2.8 versus 2.9 +/- 3.6, p = 0.0666) when compared to ***: This level 1 study is the first to utilize objective biometric measurements to evaluate use of interactive virtual reality during multiple types of pediatric orthopedic procedures in the clinical setting. Background Acquired brain injury (ABI) often leads to persisting somatic, cognitive, and social impairments. Cognitive impairments of processing speed, sustained attention, and working memory are frequently reported and may negatively affect activities of daily living and quality of life. Rehabilitation efforts aiming to retrain these cognitive functions have often consisted of computerized training programs. However, few studies have demonstrated effects that transfer beyond the trained tasks. There is a growing optimism regarding the potential usefulness of virtual reality (VR) in cognitive rehabilitation. The research literature is sparse, and existing studies are characterized by considerable methodological weaknesses. There is also a lack of knowledge about the acceptance and tolerability of VR as an intervention method for people with ABI. The present study aims to investigate whether playing a commercially available VR game is effective in training cognitive functions after ABI and to explore if the possible effects transfer into everyday *** One hundred participants (18-65 years), with a verified ABI, impairments of processing speed/attention, and/or working memory, and a minimum of 12 months post injury will be recruited. Participants with severe aphasia, apraxia, visual neglect, epilepsy, and severe mental illness will be excluded. Participants will be randomized into two parallel groups: (1) an intervention group playing a commercial VR game taxing processing speed, working memory, and sustained attention;(2) an active control group receiving psychoeducation regarding compensatory strategies, and general cognitive training tasks such as crossword puzzles or sudoku. The intervention period is 5 weeks. The VR group will be asked to train at home for 30 min 5 days per week. virtual reality-enhanced interventions on preoperative anxiety symptoms in adults undergoing elective surgery: A meta-analysis and meta-regression

Background: virtual reality exposure and distraction are recent novel technologies for reducing preoperative anxiety symptoms. However, the effectiveness of virtual reality-enhanced interventions in adults is still controversial and has yet to be evaluated in a systematic review. Objectives: The study aimed to (1) evaluate the effectiveness of virtual reality-enhanced interventions on preoperative anxiety symptoms in adults compared to comparators;and (2) identify the factors affecting the effectiveness of interventions. Design: Systematic review, meta-analysis, and meta-regression analysis of randomised controlled trials. Methods: We conducted a three-step systematic search from inception until May 1, 2024, using (1) eleven databases, (2) two clinical registries, and (3) citation and grey literature searches in either English or Chinese. The package meta of R software version 4.3.1 was used to perform the meta-analysis, subgroup analysis, and metaregression analyses. We adopted the restricted maximum likelihood estimator for random-effects metaanalysis and univariate random-effects meta-regression analyses. The Cochrane risk-of-bias tool version 2 and the Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development, and Evaluation criteria were used to examine quality assessment and the certainty of evidence. Results: We selected 26 randomised controlled trials with 2357 participants from 12 different countries. Random-effects meta-analyses showed that virtual reality-enhanced interventions had a statistically significant reduction in preoperative anxiety symptoms (t = -5.58, p < 0.001) with a moderate to large effect size (Hedges' g = -0.76, 95 % confidence interval: -1.03 to -0.48) compared to usual care. Statistically significant subgroup differences were found for the nature of the intervention, geographical region, country, and type of surgery. Background: Theoretical models and behavioural studies indicate faster approach behaviour for high-calorie food (approach bias) among healthy participants. A previous study with virtual reality (VR) and online motioncapture quantified this approach bias towards food and non-food cues in a controlled VR environment with hand movements. The aim of this study was to test the specificity of a manual approach bias for high-calorie food in grasp movements compared to low-calorie food and neutral objects of different complexity, namely, simple balls and geometrically more complex office tools. Methods: In a VR setting, healthy participants (N = 27) repeatedly grasped or pushed high-calorie food, lowcalorie food, balls and office tools in randomized order with 30 item repetitions. All objects were rated for valence and arousal. Results: High-calorie food was less attractive and more arousing in subjective ratings than low-calorie food and neutral objects. Movement onset was faster for high-calorie food in push-trials, but overall push responses were comparable. In contrast, responses to high-calorie food relative to low-calorie food and to control objects were faster in grasp trials for later stages of interaction (grasp and collect). Non-parametric tests confirmed an approach bias for high-calorie food. Conclusion: A behavioural bias for food was specific to high-calorie food objects. The results confirm the presence of bottom-up advantages in motor-cognitive behaviour for high-calorie food in a non-clinical population. More systematic variations of object fidelity and in clinical populations are outstanding. The utility of VR in assessing approach behaviour is confirmed in this study by exploring manual interactions in a controlled environment.

Background: In Norway, individuals who struggle to participate in the workforce can take part in rehabilitation programmes to improve their work ability. The goal is to return to work by working with cognitive, physical, and environmental processes. virtual reality (VR) technology has become a popular and common tool in many healthcare and rehabilitation services but has not yet been systematically applied in occupational rehabilitation. Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the experiences of participants who engaged in a game-based, immersive VR activity as part of an occupational rehabilitation program. Material and Methods: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with individuals on long-term sick leave. In total, 12 women and three men (median age 45 years) from three rehabilitation centres (five individuals from each centre) were interviewed before and after discharge from the inpatient stay. The transcripts were analysed using Systematic Text Condensation. Results: When analysing the data material, four themes were consistent. The first and the second theme contained information about how the VR headset and the game influenced the participants. The headset forced them to pay full attention and gave a feeling of protection from external stimuli. The game brought joy, energy, and endurance with its music and rhythm. The third and fourth themes provided information about how the gaming activity influenced the participants. They experienced that it provided a free space and symptom relief. In addition, they got carried away, broke barriers, and challenged themselves. Conclusion: The study results indicated that a gamified VR activity in occupational rehabilitation may be a new and powerful experience, substantially different from other rehabilitation modalities. VR training can facilitate a here-and-now feeling distracted from the outside world. More knowledge is needed on possible synergies between VR and other components of occupational rehabilitation and

Introduction virtual reality (VR) is becoming increasingly popular to train health-care professionals (HCPs) to acquire and/or maintain cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) basic or advanced *** To understand whether VR in CPR training or retraining courses can have benefits for patients (neonatal, pediatric, and adult), HCPs and health-care organizations as compared to traditional CPR *** A systematic review (PROSPERO: CRD42023431768) following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. In June 2023, the PubMed, Cochrane Library, Scopus and Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL) databases were searched and included studies evaluated in their methodological quality with Joanna Briggs Institute checklists. Data were narratively *** Fifteen studies published between 2013 and 2023 with overall fair quality were included. No studies investigated patients' outcomes. At the HCP level, the virtual learning environment was perceived to be engaging, realistic and facilitated the memorization of the procedures;however, limited decision-making, team building, psychological pressure and frenetic environment were underlined as disadvantages. Moreover, a general improvement in performance was reported in the use of the defibrillator and carrying out the chest compressions. At the organizational level, one study performed a cost/benefit evaluation in favor of VR as compared to traditional CPR *** The use of VR for CPR training and retraining is in an early stage of development. Some benefits at the HCP level are promising. Background Hemodialysis patients are prone to anxiety and depression due to physiological changes and psychological tensions that leave irreversible effects on the patients. In this regard, the present study was an attempt to provide a simulated situation by using virtual reality on the anxiety level of dialysis patients before performing surgical procedures. Methods This non-equivalent groups pre-posttest quasi-experimental study was conducted in 2022 in a hemodialysis ward of Imam Khomeini General Hospital affiliated with Tehran University of Medical Sciences. The study population was patients suffering from kidney failure referred to this hospital. The participants were 30 patients selected from the study population, who were allocated into two groups (15 in each experimental and control group). The control group received routine training in the ward. The experimental group participants watched five educational virtual reality (VR) contents in addition to the routine training. They used head-mounted display VR (VR BOX headset 2.0 virtual reality glasses) to immerse in a virtual environment similar to the real world covering the experience of entering the operating room, during the surgery, and after surgery. The data gathering instrument was a valid and reliable anxiety inventory. The collected data was analyzed at a significance level of 0.05. Results The study findings indicated that the anxiety scores of the experimental and control groups had no significant difference before intervention. However, after the intervention of virtual reality, the state and trait anxiety of the experimental group participants were significantly lower than the control group (P-value < 0.01). Conclusion The application of VR for maintenance hemodialysis patients before invasive surgical procedures decreases patients' anxiety. PurposeThe aim of this prospective study was to evaluate the tolerance and feasibility of using virtual reality headsets with patients during interventional radiology *** and methodIn this single-center prospective study, the use of a virtual reality headset in addition to the usual analgesic and anxiolytic treatment was proposed to all patients presenting in the interventional radiology department from December 2020 to June 2022. Exclusion criteria were as follows: (1) patients with whom it was not possible to communicate (2) epileptic patients, (3) non-verbal patients, and (4) pregnant women. The main objective was to evaluate the safety of the procedure by screening complications during and after the procedure. The second objective was to evaluate feasibility, as defined by the number of patients using the helmet until the end of the procedure. Effectiveness (patient's self-evaluation of pain and anxiety), comfort, satisfaction, emotions felt, sense of security, and feeling of immersion were also evaluated. Caregivers completed a feedback *** reality headsets were offered to 100 patients, 9 of whom declined. Procedures were achieved in 93.5% of cases: 6/91 patients removed the headset before the end of the procedure. There were minor adverse events in 2/85 (2.3%) procedures (discomfort and nausea) and no major adverse events. 93.9% of patients found an overall benefit, and 90.2% would recommend virtual reality to another patient. 94.4% of caregivers were satisfied with the virtual reality equipment. The mean pain level was 2.5 +/- 2.7 before the procedure, 3.3 +/- 2.5 during the procedure, and 1.6 +/- 2.7 after the procedure. Mean anxiety scores were 4.6 +/- 2.9 before the procedure, 3.1 +/- 2.7 during the procedure, and 1.1 +/- 1.9 after the *** use of virtual reality technology as a complement to traditional therapy for procedures under local anesthesia is feasible and safe in interventional radiology
