Based on the statistics of private investment data in Xi'an from 2010 to 2021, this article uses the DEA Malmquist model to empirically analyze the efficiency of private investment in Xi'an. The study found that the technical efficiency index of private investment in Xi'an has not changed, and total factor productivity is mainly affected by changes in the technical progress index. Before 2012, the efficiency of private investment in Xi'an was in a downward trend of TFP. From 2013 to 2020, except for 2017, the efficiency of private investment in all other years was in an upward trend of TFP. According to the grey correlation results, the top five factors affecting the dynamic efficiency ranking of private investment in Xi'an are financial development level, urbanization level, tertiary industry development level, marketization degree, and fiscal policy in order. © 2024 Copyright held by the owner/author(s).

Plain language summaryAs resistance to antibiotics is increasing among microbes, rational use of these drugs is important both in the community and in hospitals. Many infections with resistant microorganisms may be fatal. For a long time, carbapenems have been the last resort for treatment of resistant microorganisms. Unfortunately, resistance to these drugs is increasing. It appears that use of higher doses of antibiotics may help in some cases. However, the potential harm caused by higher doses is a problem. In this primary study, higher doses of meropenem, a common carbapenem, were found to be safe. Objective: To evaluate the safety of megadose meropenem as empirical treatment of nosocomial sepsis. Materials & methods: Critically ill patients diagnosed with sepsis received either high-dose (2 g every 8 h) or megadose (4 g every 8 h) meropenem as an intravenous infusion over 3 h. Results: A total of 23 patients with nosocomial sepsis were eligible and included in the megadose (n = 11) or high-dose (n = 12) group. No treatment-related adverse events were observed during a 14-day follow-up. Clinical response was also comparable between the groups. Conclusion: Megadose meropenem may be considered for empirical treatment of nosocomial sepsis without serious concern regarding its safety.

Misery Index Improvement: A Review Based on Theoretical and empirical Evidence

With countries' misery index analysis being increasingly utilized to measure welfare and macroeconomic performance, there is a rising curiosity about understanding a comprehensive economic misery index that is able to provide a more nuanced understanding of economic distress and well-being within a society. This review provided a misery index improvement based on existing theoretical and empirical evidence. Using a system review method, after two screening phases, the study examined 100 publications spanning from the 1960s to 2024. We reviewed the literature on its historical measurement, how it was used and conceptualized, and proposed improvements by various scholars. The study proposed a new misery index including the sum of the annual unemployment rate (U), inflation rate (I), bank lending rate (R), and exchange rate (EX), all of which deducted the real per capita gross domestic product (RGDP), in short, (U + I + R + EX)-RGDP. The study recommended that future researchers include the current challenges, including sustainability in the environment, income disparity, innovations in technology, and life satisfaction indicators, while establishing and expanding the misery index.

Background Although the ectopic foci responsible for initiating atrial fibrillation (AF) are usually located in the pulmonary veins (PVs), non-PV sources may initiate AF in approximately 11% of unselected patients with paroxysmal or persistent AF. The superior vena cava (SVC) is one of the most frequent non-PV origins for initiating AF. This study aims to investigate the effect of empirical SVC isolation in redo AF ablation procedures. Methods Consecutive patients undergoing redo AF ablation procedures using a high-power short-duration protocol (HPSD) (50 W;ablation index guided;target AI 350 for posterior wall ablation, AI 450 for anterior wall ablation;CARTO 3 mapping system) were included. Patients with SVC isolation were compared to patients without SVC isolation. Periprocedural parameters and complications were recorded and analyzed. Short-term endpoints included intrahospital AF recurrence, midterm endpoint AF freedom after 3 months, and long-term endpoint AF freedom after 12 months. Results A total of 276 patients underwent repeat ablation for recurrent AF (67 +/- 10 years;57% male;31.5% paroxysmal AF). The patients were divided into two groups: redo procedures with SVC isolation vs redo procedure without SVC isolation. Additional LA substrate modification was done based on intraprocedural voltage maps. Baseline characteristics did not differ significantly between the two groups. Median procedure time was 85.4 +/- 27.1 min with ablation times of 14.0 +/- 8.5 min. Intrahospital AF recurrence occurred in 32 patients (12%) with no difference among both groups: 17 patients (13%) SVC vs 15 patients (10%) No-SVC;p = 0.416. At 3-month follow-up, 47 (17%) presented an AF recurrence during the blanking period: 25 patients (19%) SVC vs 22 patients (15%) No-SVC;p = 0.304). After 12 months, 202 (73%) of all patients were in stable sinus rhythm with no significant difference between the two groups: 93 patients (73%) SVC vs 109 patients (74%) No-SVC;p = 0.853). Background: Pneumonia is the primary cause of death among HIV-infected children in Africa, with mortality rates as high as 35-40% in infants hospitalized with severe pneumonia. Bacterial pathogens and Pneumocystis jirovecii are well known causes of pneumonia-related death, but other important causes such as cytomegalovirus (CMV) and tuberculosis (TB) remain under-recognized and undertreated. The immune response elicited by CMV may be associated with the risk of developing TB and TB disease progression, and CMV may accelerate disease caused both by HIV and TB. Minimally invasive autopsies confirm that CMV and TB are unrecognized causes of death in children with HIV. CMV and TB may also co-infect the same child. The aim of this study is to compare the impact on 15-day and 1-year mortality of empirical treatment against TB and CMV plus standard of care (SoC) versus SoC in HIV-infected infants with severe pneumonia. Methods: This is a Phase II-III open-label randomized factorial (2 x 2) clinical trial, conducted in six African countries. The trial has four arms. Infants from 28 to 365 days of age HIV-infected and hospitalized with severe pneumonia will be randomized (1:1:1:1) to (i) SoC, (ii) valganciclovir, (iii) TB-T, and (iv) TB-T plus valganciclovir. The primary endpoint of the study is all-cause mortality, focusing on the short-term (up to 15 days) and long-term (up to 1 year) mortality. Secondary endpoints include repeat hospitalization, duration of oxygen therapy during initial admission, severe and notable adverse events, adverse reactions, CMV and TB prevalence at enrolment, TB incidence, CMV viral load reduction, and evaluation of diagnostic tests such as GeneXpert Ultra on fecal and nasopharyngeal aspirate samples and urine TB-LAM. A grasp of police research: characteristics of empirical research on police careers based on multiple scoping reviews

Purpose - This article provides an overview of the literature characteristics of empirical research on topics related to police careers from 2000 to 2021. Methodology, distribution in time and space and types of publication are presented. Recommendations for new research avenues are given. Design/methodology/approach - Eight scoping reviews on specific topics were carried out by criminology students under the close guidance and supervision of the first author, an academic researcher. The reviews followed the same procedure, enabling an overarching reflection. Findings - The scoping reviews resulted in 179 unique publications for analysis. It appears that the topic of police professional competencies is studied more often in the field of police careers (n = 55), in contrast to informal learning in police training (n = 4) which was studied the least frequently. Since 2012, there has been a noticeable increase in the number of publications. Publications in scientific journals are by far the most common (n = 153), as is a quantitative research design (n = 123). All topics have been studied in Europe and North America. Research limitations/implications - More qualitative research and international dissemination of empirical results are recommended to gain a deeper understanding of police careers. As for the limitations, specific topics were selected, which limits the scope of the findings. Working with students for data collection has its benefits in terms of workload, but comes with potential limitations in terms of quality. It is recommended to conduct a screening using the four-eyed principle, as was done here by the first and second authors. Additionally, the review protocol (e.g. keywords and databases) has an influence on the outcome. Different choices may lead to different results. Do artificial intelligence system adoptions foster production management supply chain performance in pharmaceutical manufacturing firms? An empirical exploring study from the MENA region

Purpose - The goal of this study is to better understand the driving force behind the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in pharmaceutical manufacturing firms (PMFs) that are recognized as developing countries in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region that are listed by the Chambers of the Industries of Jordan, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Morocco, and Algeria. Furthermore, the effect of adopting and using AI in managing raw materials (RMs), products, parts, and components for PMFs through supply chains (SCs). Design/methodology/approach - A self-administrated questionnaire survey was used to gather data from 95 out of 511 participating managers (e.g. manufacturing, supplying, IT, operational, and logistical managers) utilizing a quantitative technique with a random sample size. In fact, 18.8% of the 89 different manufacturing firms (MFs) in the MENA area responded, with five to six managers from each company. The raw data was analyzed using partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM). Findings - The study's findings show that the readiness to embrace artificial intelligence (AI) in the production management supply chain performance (PMSCP) of pharmaceutical manufacturing firms in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) is positively and significantly influenced directly and indirectly by sustainable strategic supplier reliability (SSSR), shipping process dependability (SPD), technological factors (TFs), and infrastructure transformational development capability (ITDC). Originality/value - As the studied countries are growing economies, such study findings might offer insightful consequences for stakeholders and policymakers regarding the significance of using artificial intelligence system adoptions in pharmaceutical manufacturing enterprises in the MENA region. Identifying Playfulness: An empirical Study on How Adults Recognize and Define Playfulness Across Culture

Playfulness is a critical concept for the study of games, play, and adult well-being. empirical and theoretical works have argued for the major influence it has in adult lives around the globe. Despite these affirmations, one of the most commonly described barriers for further work is that there remains little clarity on how playfulness can be identified in diverse contexts. Most definitions are created for narrow applications with little evidence that they apply to other contexts. The inability to identify playfulness, especially across culture, thus remains a major gap for modern researchers. This work addresses this gap with 50 interviews by adults from 38 countries around the world on how they identify playfulness in their own life. Adults across culture identify playfulness with four characteristics: Active Behavior, Emotional Reinforcement, Social Sharing, and Non-Serious Framing. This four-part framework creates a clarifying and innovative vocabulary for future works on playfulness.

Excess Loss by Urban Building Shadowing and empirical Slant Path Model

Excess loss due to building shadowing is regarded as an obstacle effect by buildings existing on the radio propagation path in relation to the service coverage performance of the next-generation mobile communication. In order to overcome the limitations of a geometric or deterministic modeling of existing obstacle loss models (ITU-R, W-I, and W-B model) and increase the accuracy of prediction of excess loss below 10 GHz in real urban environments, the improved empirical model is proposed by adding new variable and optimized fitting parameter values to the existing ITU-R model's formula. New variable and optimized parameter values reflect complex building structure and building height and their propagation impact through measurement. For validation of the proposed model, the self-verification and cross-verification were performed using the measured data from Korea and Japan. The measured data as well as the proposed model were presented as root-mean-square error that can be compared with other existing models in accuracy. The new proposed empirical model showed good agreement with the measured data compared to the existing geometric and deterministic models. In conclusion, the proposed model can be applied to the slant path link below 10 GHz frequency.
